Gimme something to talk about

Strange weather seemed to plague even the Auster continent from what Pheonix was observing. He'd needed to get a lay of the land for his daughters sake and if he was going to achieve the goals he wanted then there was no choice. The bitter cold was not his enemy, snow born the fluffy young male felt warmth passing through him while the chill nipped at the edges of his fur. Long slender legs pushed him forward through the mossy undergrowth. Snow dotted the landscape, making the grass almost appear frozen. Reaching out of the barrier of bushes he watched a creek come into view. Much to his surprise the quacking sounds of ducks reached his outstretched ears.

The soft sounds of the animals in the creek filled him with joy starting from nosetip to tailtip. Warmth moved through his stomach while he stood on the edge of the creek. A small family of ducks sat in the flowing water - four adult ducks and it seemed two sets of ducklings. Why the creatures decided to have kin in such a harsh environment he didn't know. The ducklings were likely to freeze, but this was however how nature worked. While he stared at the ducks in content, the back of his mind wondered what would happen should he hunt one of the partners. What would the remaining do, the ducklings? Left? Raised by a single parents or the three. Pheonix was thinking to indepthly about it.

The girl found herself rising early in the morning to head out from her usual haunts. She had been spending way too much time at the Rune Stones that she had ignored the fact that there was plenty of other areas she had yet to even set foot in. While the structures she'd been studying were exciting and awe-inspiring, she realized the need to branch out and see more of the wonders of Auster. Aodhan had told her of the few places he'd been and she was mentally kicking herself for not taking the time to go out and see them. Her one regret was that the old castle was off limits. She supposed she could go and ask for a tour, but even that sounded absurd in her own mind. What pack in their right minds would give a loner a tour? It was just wishful thinking on her end.

It wasn't long before she found herself nearing a creek. She could smell the fresh smell of the icy creek from here on the wind the whipped into her face. Even snow and ice covered, the creek had a beautiful look to it. She admired the view from the distance until a figure caught her attention. Her ears flicked forward with interest as she padded closer to the male who had his back turned to her. She could see ducks and their babies in the creek and her eyes flicked back to the male. Was he bird watching? How cute!

"It's strange seeing babies this time of year." She greeted. "Auster hasn't even hit its cold season yet technically." She chuckled at the irony. It was supposed to be the temperature of autumn here this time of year, but winter had decided to come early and display just how harsh it could be.

His morbid thoughts were interupted before he could pounce on the ducks. Pheonix's head whipped around ears perked as he sotted the other wolf. She was white with what seemed to be brown and red covering her back - her comment about the ducks made him turn to look at the family floating around the chilly river. The ducks looked content despite the chilly weather and it was indeed right of the female to say that it was an odd time of year for chicks. "They must be first time parents. Probably decided to have their ducklings too late in the season." it was interesting to hear that Auster was only supposed to be entering it's cold season. So it was meant to be autmn but this ice age had reached this far. It was not uncommon for inexperienced parents to lose a pup or otherwise their young. Though this reminded of his own shortcomings, not that there was anything he could have done about his son.

Breaking away from his thoughts though he smiled towards the woman the edge of his tail twitching curiously. He tried to focus on her instead of the grief that was threatening to crawl up on him. "My name is Pheonix Isokan, it's a pleasure to meet you." he dipped his head politely to the female. His eyes looking towards the ducks. "You know much about Auster?" his head tilted to the side as the words slid off of his tongue. If not for proper manners he always hoped that he made his way into the friendly part of others hearts. He rather be on that side than the side that was an enemy. It caused too much trouble and enemies stood a chance of the poison he could great. Perhaps that was why he was determined for more greatness than this.

"They might have moved here from Boreas. It's still cold but not as cold as up there." She murmured mostly to herself as she watched them. She felt bad for the parents and the hardships the little family would have to go through. Even if all the snow disappeared Auster was only going to remain chilly if the weather went back to normal. It would be a while before nature caught up and realized it was time for plants to grow once more. Their only saving grace was that the prey here preferred lower Auster as opposed to the frigid temps of Boreas. At least hunting hadn't been too difficult. It didn't mean she felt nothing for the rest of the animals suffering. Their plight and the plight of the little ducklings pained her.

She was happy for the distraction. She probably would have sat and watched the ducks the rest of the day and tried to think of how to make their lives easier. The man introduced himself and Antheia smiled warmly at him in return to his head dip. "I'm Antheia Raekan. It's nice to meet you too Phoenix." Her tail thumped softly before she followed his gaze bac to the ducks. They were probably going to end up as someone's lunch before the end of the season. She was aware that it was the way of life, she ate meat too, but something about the poor little parents who had babies too late in the season bothered her. "I know a little of Auster. My father would tell me stories when I was a pup." She replied to him with a far off look in her eyes. "What about you? I could be reading it wrong, but you seem new here." She looked back up at him again with a curious look on her face. Maybe he needed directions?
