It felt a little odd to be here alone without his mother, but he embraced the novelty and padded across the rolling battlefield, fire and ice eyes scanning the field with interest. Despite the weather slowly starting to gain a feeling of warmth, the bite was still in the air and he wondered if summer would even be a thing. He remembered summer being warmer when he was young. A lot warmer.
He circled and picked out a spot that was on a hill, relatively flat, but jumbled with stones, although wolves of the past seemed to have moved most of them to piles in a ring around the crown of the hill.
He was armored, and he paused to unbuckle the pouches from their spots and set them well aside, where Lyr perched to keep an eye on them as Ardyn moved to the middle of the ring and tipped his muzzle to the sky, singing an invitation for a spar, tail briefly torching with excitement. His first spar alone on the Field.
Lyr would tell his mother about the outcome, certainly—though the raven was Ardyn’s best friend and companion, neither boy nor bird would lie to his mother.

Ardyn at first glance is as black as can be imagined with a raven sheen.
Closer inspection proves that he shimmers in fire tones in every hair on his hide right down to his lashes.
More obviously, he glows like a bed of coals and flames with every movement and brush of fur. His tail is usually wagging, so blazes like a torch.
His adult teeth are in and his saber canines have grown to their full length (see profile). His mane and tail hair have grown to full length, as well as being lightweight and easily buffeted by breezes.
A look at his front paws will give the impression of hands, with his dew claw dropped low and lengthened into a functioning thumb, and his toes elongated into fingers. He has retractable, solid black cat-like claws on every paw.
Ardyn has developed a glowing mast of intricate markings in fire and ice colors over his face, symmetrical over the last seasons of Year 17 (see profile for details). During hunts or raids/sieges, he will smudge them out with black soot to cover the glow, otherwise, they are bright enough to note at first direct glance at his face. Not all his artwork currently portrays the mask markings.
He is also often bedecked in beads, small bells, feathers in blues, ribbons and braids thanks to the Ooze Event of Halloween 2021, and the Coathanger item that he got. The accessories generally are seen most in his mane and tail hair. He removes the brighter items and bells for hunts or battle.
Anatomist
Now six months old Lukina was allowed to wander to the nearby Battlefield by herself in search of continuing her fighting skills. Clouds moved slowly through the sky but she paid little attention to the chill in the air. She'd been born in winter and had only known the cold. With the coming of summer this was one of the warmest days she'd experienced and she was eager to make the most of it.
She heard a call for a spar partner from a younger sounding voice and she immediately moved toward it finding a young man waiting there in his armor. She gazed at him for a moment, watching the colors dancing in his fur before clearing her throat. "I'll fight you!" She squared off against him setting her defenses.

Not long after he called for a sparring partner, a pale figure came into sight. A pup, maybe six months, but judging by her figure he guessed she’s be tall when she was grown. He studied her as she did him, finding himself reminded of Baine. Had his great aunt looked like this girl as a pup?
He grinned, tail flagging in a fiery wag as he nodded, settling into his own defenses, head dropping low, just beneath his withers, chin tucking to add that much more protection to his throat from the younger, for-now-smaller, wolf.
He flexed his front claws, long toes stretching to get the last little kinks out before he offered, “You want the first move? I’m Ardyn, by the way.”

"I'm Lukina!" She replied as the boy introduced himself as Ardyn. She nodded as he offered her the first move. She double checked her defenses, making sure her ears were pinned and her tail tucked as her fur stood up on end. While she was growing rapidly the boy was still a good deal bigger than her. She bounded forward, rushing straight at the larger male at first but as she neared she slipped slightly to her right, twisting her head in as she sought to bite the left side of the boys neck. At the same time she shifted her weight to her left and hind legs as her right forepaw lanced forward trying to scratch the boy's left shoulder.

He grinned at her introduction and gave a quick, “Nice to meet ya!” before she took the first move. He held firm, studying her eyes in the few heartbeats to gauge what she’d do, and as her course shifted, Ardyn sought to move as well, stepping quickly to his own right and half a step forward, dropping as he went to present his left shoulder beneath its hardened armor as her teeth came for him.

The boy moved and her attacks landed away from where she'd originally intended them. Her fangs found his armor and being so young she found herself enjoying the taste of the leather even if it wasn't pertinent to the point of a fight. Her fangs had dug into the leather and as she already was attached when Ardyn pushed his shoulder out it didn't bash her in the nose, instead it forced her back causing her feet to back pedal rapidly as she sought to stay on her feet. The leather was tough and didn't make for a good grip even though she'd really like to chew it. Being forced back with his superior strength had one upside in that it pushed her out of the way of his leg sweep. Stubbornly insistent she bounded for his nearest hind leg, seeking to wrap her jaws around his leg just above the heel as her claws launched out trying to scrape down his thigh.

His shove knocked her back, and though that made his swipe redundant, he was quick on the uptake, one eye on her as he spotted her moving for his hind end. He quickly adjusted as his left forepaw returned to the ground, bounding forward as she sought to catch his leg.
