We're Gonna Build A Wall

Come down, come down sweet reverence
The top of the valley gave way to a flatter plain. Snow covered most of the ground though patches of brown earth and rocks as well as a few dull green patches of grass could be seen. The sky was a soft warm gray and while she could see the faint form of mountains in the distance what caught her attention was the stone wall cutting through this territory. Large gray, rectangular stones were stacked on top of each other a little over twice the height of your average wolf. She wasn't quite sure what to make of it but movement caught her attention and she swiftly ducked behind a snow drift. A small pack of earth-colored loners, three of them, moved through. She watched as one by one they approached a hole in the wall where the top portion of stones had been knocked down and the remaining wall was only a few stones high. The loners climbed up a path there and then leapt over. Soon all that was left was their paw prints.

Dagrún observed the plain and made note of the grass. She hadn't ever hunted up in the north but she knew that caribou and musk oxen could be found in these regions. She wondered if any were around. They hadn't gone far when they came across a wall. It seemed particularly old and worn and was devoid of pack scent so she was inclined to say it was a human built wall. She knew Valhalla had some sort of wall but it wasn't built like this. Jynn ducked behind a snow drift and Dagrún quickly followed suit. A moment later three strange wolves appeared. Dag guessed the maned wolf's ears had picked them up when hers hadn't. The loners didn't seem to know they were there and quickly moved on.

Jynn stepped out cautiously from behind the drift, her ears up and alert to make sure any danger was past. Normally Jynn wasn't so jumpy around other wolves but now that she had a yearling in tow she was much more cautious of who was around and she also wasn't fond of being outnumbered. It was one thing meeting a wolf one on one but another entirely to be at risk of being surrounded. "Hmm… they could just be traveling through, or possibly hunting. But let's continue on. I'm going to shift our track slightly south if you don't mind, towards that forested area."

Once the strange wolves were passed Dagrún stalked closer to the wall, carefully peeking through the hole where she could see the strange wolves disappearing into the distance. Once she felt it was safe Dagrún eyed the top of the wall and leapt onto the top it. She slid a little on the icy surface, tail wagging wildly for a moment until she secured her footing. Jynn recommended shifting their course south and she nodded. A nice forested area laid that way and she was eager to see more of the forests of the north. "Ok, sounds good to me." She hopped down off of the wall.

Jynn continued to walk along the stone wall for a little bit. If anything it served as a decent land mark though in some ways it was also a shame. Knowing there were a number of herd animals that lived in these areas including caribou that migrated it was a shame for them to be so obstructed in their movements. Still, she'd have to keep this location in mind. Large herds moving through would have to be funneled through the hole and would likely be slowed in their movement making this an excellent place for an ambush. Soon it was time to part from the wall entirely. Jynn shifted south, checking to make sure her companion was following along.

Dagrun bounced along behind Jynn, tail wagging lightly. She was enjoying the cool autumn air of the north. It was crisp and fresh and it made her fur stand on end to keep the warmth close to her body. She knew this cold would eventually work its way down south as winter moved in but Dag was happy to get a preview and she only hoped this winter would be milder than the last one. Surely it would be? From what all the adults told her last year was just not normal. This would be the first year she'd have a chance to see what 'normal' really was. Dag shifted her course to follow after Jynn as they moved south of the wall.
