would you like your water sparkling or flat?

Although the nights seemed long and chill, Fable simply attributed it to the natural coming of winter. She'd been born at the height of the long ice age and had little to compare it to, but Theory assured her that this was normal. Completely typical, average winter. Sure seems a little weird, the yearling thought, her eyelids drifting closed lazily. She'd stopped to rest just for a moment and the comforting sounds of the rapids had quickly lulled her to sleep. It was a sound she'd heard nearly all her life - except at the very height of the long winter, when they had frozen completely. Fable couldn't imagine a more familiar noise. Just before her eyes began to flutter closed, she saw a flash of light dance its way through the water. Her eyes shot open and it happened again - there, a glittering, shimmering light. "Hmmm?" she murmured, slowly sitting up. Shocks of blue light danced through the water. With each ripple that crested over the rocks, the water glowed. It danced with light.

Soul really and honestly truly had no way of knowing just how odd the past two winters of his life had been. The cold of his first winter had been something he could feel, especially with his thinner coat but had no way to know how mild winter usually was in Abaven. But he had reason to assume it was more like this usually... But everyone was talking about how odd this winter seemed to be, but when he tried to understand how or why it seemed to slip through his grasp. He could understand the ideas behind some of the things he'd heard but had no real tangible grasp on them, because well... He had never seen them. So he knew the moon changed shapes he didn't really understand how it not doing that was concerning. Soul instead figured maybe if he went out at night he'd feel the difference. But honestly outside of it being warmer than he was used to there wasn't anything. He caught the scent of one of his cousins and heard her little confused noise. The boy adjusted his course, approaching her. "Anything weird happening?" He asked, hopeful that maybe he could finally understand. "Speech" |

She shot to her paws as Soul approached, her eyes still trained on the strange dancing water. "Well, funny you mention that," Fable murmured, gesturing with her paw towards the water. "It's shimmering. Like little stars are trapped inside. I've never seen anything like it." Every time the rapids splashed, bright like sparkled where normally the water would turn to white foam. The rocks touched by the water glimmered softly in the moonlight as if the water left behind some of its light each time they brushed. "I wonder if I captured some of it in one of my bowls... if the water would still sparkle." Ever an academic, Fable wanted to see if her hypothesis held true. "Wait here! I'll grab one." She spun and raced towards her nearby den to scrounge up one of her smaller clay bowls.

"What is?" Soul asked, tilting his head exaggeratingly to the side and doing his best to fix his sightless gaze on his cousin, a gentle but slightly insistent reminder she was probably going to have to be a bit more descriptive than using words like "this and that" and probably gesturing with her paws. Fable would bound off though, gathering up... Well whatever it was she was preoccupied with. Water from the sounds of it. Soul shrugged and settled himself on his haunches, happy to wait even if this was just going to end in the same way as the last few times he'd tried to understand what it was that everyone seemed worked up about. He closed his eyes, listening to the babbling of the brook, and the somehow too loud buzzing of fireflies... As if there was more of them than usual... "Speech" |
