Amidst The Dunes

Come down, come down sweet reverence
Winter laid a heavy hand everywhere else but in the west there were still snow free lands. Jynn found herself one such land. She stood atop a golden dune, gazing out across a field of golden dunes, formed by the wind rippling and twisting the sands. The sky was a soft pale blue, darker blue clouds stretched out on either side of the sky, starting to cross in front of the sun which glowed white and hot on the horizon. There was very little to be seen in terms of vegetation, just a few black branches poking out from the tops of the nearest dune.

Mæva headed west, following the movements of prey from the east and also making note of those heading in the opposite direction. She knew there were rich lands in the west of course. Having family in Valhalla made that easily known to her but there were also a number of barren lands. She found herself in one such land, a land of sand as far as the eye could see and it was hard for her to imagine anything living out in this land but she'd be curious to see what kinds of prey were about, if any. Instead she saw a strange looking wolf with long legs and huge ears. That made sense for a desert creature. She headed toward the strange woman. "Hello there! I was wondering if you could tell me about the prey in this region."

Jynn marked the position of the sun in the sky, set her course and started working her way carefully down the side of the dune she'd been standing on. There was a gentle breeze and it stirred the sand lightly, thankfully there was no sign of the wind picking up, she had no desire to get stuck in a sand storm, especially as there seemed to be no shelter anywhere should she need to take it. Jynn slowed as she heard someone call out to her. She turned to see a young wolf who had asked about the prey there. She smiled politely. "I'm afraid I don't know. I'm new to this area. I assume you are to? What brings you here?"

Mæva smiled as the strange wolf greeted her. She was glad that the stranger seemed friendly, that made her feel less embarrassed about her question especially as it seemed the wolf was not a native. "Oh sorry, I shouldn't have assumed. My name is Mæva. I'm from Abaven to the east. Just thought I'd get an overview of prey movements between the two regions." She'd clearly missed the trail as any of their usual prey would likely go around such a barren place. Oh well, it was good to know that this place existed so it could be avoided in the future.

Jynn settled down carefully as she sat and wrapped her tail around her paws. She'd learned the hard way that one had to be careful when sitting on desert sand. It was possible to burn the bum on the hot sand. "Nice to meet you Mæva, I'm Jynn from nowhere in particular. Just wandering through." She thought it was interesting that the younger woman was tracking prey movements but she supposed that made sense for a pack wolf. Since she lived in a place with a specific border they had to make sure that there was prey available in their region. Jynn much preferred to follow prey.

The strange woman introduced herself as Jynn and explained that she wasn't from anywhere in particular. That made sense. Mæva hadn't detected any pack scent on the woman. Jynn settled down to talk but Mæva wasn't sure if she'd care to linger here for too long. The sun was resting on the horizon but it wouldn't be long before it was hot. Well, maybe. In truth Mæva wasn't sure if it would get hot here in the winter or if it would be warm or maybe it would be just as cold here during the day as everywhere else. Well, she supposed she could hang around for a bit and find out.
