Long forgotten were the scent markers that delineated the edges of Fireside territory, where the young Saxe probably should have been sticking close to. There was a whole wide world out there, and he was going to get his grubby little paws on every scant inch of it. Familiarity came from the heady scent of animals in the air, drawing the adventurous misfit into the midst of the prairie. Antelope carefully bounded in a wide circle around the young boy as they noticed him, the sharp thudding of their hooves paired with the rough sound of their breathing as they passed him by. Somewhere to his right he could hear something squeaking ferociously, but as he got closer it became obvious that he wasn't welcome to investigate the sound. A set of sharp teeth nipped roughly at his little toes, warning him of imminent danger if he decided to push his luck. Frowning down at the ground, the boy backed off from the burrowing animals that were getting ready to remove any misplaced paws. As he wandered along, he could hear the faintest trickling of water moving along. With tall auds swiveling to pinpoint the source of the sound, he moved slowly forwards with that strange high step of his. Eventually, he placed one tiny paw into a babbling stream and let out a surprised yelp. It was freezing! A firm stomp of his now soggy paw, and that cold water splashed up and hit his chest. Giggling with delight, he slapped both forepaws into the shallow streambed like an off-beat bongo solo, shrill yips escaping him out of pure delight.
