He wasn't sure how it happened or when it exactly began, but the youth had grown large crystals on his body and he found it hard to walk. They grew on his legs, making his steps heavy as if he were tied down to the earth. Moving for him was slow, and to make matters worse, he had smaller crystal clusters growing from the corners of his eyes and his ears, too. Green ooze seemed to flow freely from where the crystals grew, and he was sure all this added weight and loss of fluids was the reason he had been feeling pretty fatigued. He still ate, but meals were few and far in between since he had to try to make and set traps to catch his food. He couldn't effectively chase anything down for more than a quick sprint before he got too tired to continue on.
He had eventually made it to the lake, mushrooms and fireflies and crystals growing all over the place, though he ignored those as he set his crystallized sights on the water. His throat felt parched, the ooze on his tongue making him feel dehydrated, and he was sure he looked worse for wear. He half-slid, half fell onto the shore of the lake, the large crystal clusters that grew down his spine causing him to flop to his side. He had tried to remove them a few days prior, but the pain had been excruciating and he had no success in getting any of them off. He shoved his muzzle into the water, practically inhaling the water as he desperately sought to quench his thirst.

He was spectacularly... bored. This new land was interesting, but it also made him wary like nothing ever before. Permanent darkness, weird mists, growths growing off prey and predator alike - it was weird. But more than that, the ones who would converse with him - mostly the weirdly oversized wolves in the land - were sometimes, ah, not wholly mentally intact. And he wasn't sure how to handle that. He mostly didn't; preferring to simply avoid for now and watching quietly from a distance. It worked for the time being, but it did make for a boring life of survival only. He was a pack based canine; lacking those connections bothered him.
Which is how, when he heard the not so subtle steps of the wolf by the lake, he froze and then swiftly began to follow. This was one of those times where curiosity overrode some of his caution, but he kept it about him regardless. He crept forward as the wolf, very brightly colored with even brighter crystals, slid down the lake shore to the water and drank like his life depended on it. After that, he carefully approached, posed to flee, but tail up, ears perked in curiosity, and a question in his eyes. "I see that you are afflicted with this strange disease," he commented from several feet away.

He gulped down the water as if his life did indeed depend on it. He practically choked on the water and the ooze as they mixed, and the taste wasn't as refreshing as he expected it to be, but he didn't care right now. He was more concerned about the large crystals and shit growing on his body than he was about the taste of the water, after all. When he finished, he coughed and sputtered as he tried to free up what felt like a glob of ooze in his throat, and when he spit it up it dropped into the water with an audible plop. He was tired, hungry, and in no mood to even move. But when he heard a stranger's voice nearby, he tiredly picked up his head to look towards the stranger. It wasn't like any wolf he'd seen before. He looked more dog-like, and he wondered if this guy was even a wolf, or a hybrid, or just a full-on dog. He'd heard of their once domesticated cousins from his father, but he'd never actually seen one until now.
"Unfortunately," He replied as he tried to pick himself up. The crystals that lined his back and legs made it difficult to stand, but he refused to let himself lie down while in the company of a stranger. After all, he was an easier target on the ground, and he wasn't about to let someone try to take advantage of that. "The worlds gone to shit over the Winter, so I'm sure a lot of us predator and prey alike have been infected with this shit," Though it appeared the dog didn't seem to be affected at all...he squinted past the crystals in the corners of his eyes, noting how not sick the stranger looked. "You seem...fine...lucky you." He muttered darkly.

Eru couldn't help the brief grimace of disgust as the wolf hawked up a glob of... what looked like colored ooze and goo. It was like snot, except so, so much worse. The sound itself made one ear rotate back and waiver, though the other stayed firmly forward-facing as the wolf noticed his presence. Oh. The wolf turned his head. What the hell. He had horns. And fangs. What in the world? Ears flattening briefly, they popped back up and swiveled as he started speaking. Despite the rather... unique... features this canine possessed, he didn't seem hostile and didn't seem like a threat. On the contrary, the wolf seemed exhausted, burdened, and.... well, as sick as he looked. Which was very, very sick.
"It certainly seems like it has. So it hasn't always been like this, then?" he questioned, glancing around at the world. He knew the sun had been slowly going away, but when he entered the land, there was no more sun by that point. Only a brief color on the horizon and that was it. Now it was gone entirely. "I've seen both infected. I haven't seen how, and the path of... infection doesn't seem to be making much sense." He paused as the stranger squinted at him, one paw raising as if to be ready to turn on a dime. After the next muttered words, his paw slowly touched the ground again. "I suppose. I am a newcomer here." It made sense to him: less susceptible because he was not from this land. But at the end of the day, who knew why?

"It certainly seems like it has. So it hasn't always been like this, then?" Ifrit shook his head, though the motion was slow and stiff. He certainly couldn't move as fast as he usually could thanks to the extra weight on him, and his head sunk below his shoulders. He was a sad sight from what he usually looked like, he was sure. His body was normally not so frail looking nor ragged, but the crystals seemed to leave his energy feeling incredibly drained and he was ready for a nap..."No...I'm normally not covered in giant crystals, let alone feeling this...shitty...I don't know what happened, but the world suddenly changed sometime over the Winter. All I know is I was fine until I touched a crystal, so I imagine others who are infected must have come in contact with the other weird shit."
He hadn't seen his father nor his siblings since the start of all this...were they fine? Had they met the same fate as him? Were they growing mushrooms and crystals and oozing weird shit, too? He wasn't sure. It was hard to imagine his father or his siblings covered in crystals, though he supposed it was better than being covered in giant mushrooms...right? "I haven't figured out yet exactly how we got infected...though I'm sure those of us who fucked with a crystal, or mushroom are going through what I am...though all I did was kinda...touch one...with a claw...still, I can't speak for others..." He didn't miss the way the dog looked ready to flee at a moments notice, and Ifrit couldn't help but shift a bit, wincing as a crystal on his leg rubbed against his chest. Normally he wasn't so social or even in the mood to offer a decent conversation, but he was so exhausted with the weight of his condition and lack of sleep, that being his usual self at the moment just wasn't in the cards.

Eyes stayed trained on the red-hued wolf as it - he - slowly shook his head. Slow, almost clumsy-like, and definitely not with a power or grace one would expect from a canine. Considering the crystals - which looked heavy - covering him from literally head to tail and toe toes to shoulder, he wasn't surprised that moving seemed difficult. Still, the wolf was likely around his age and moving like he was elderly. It was bizarre, but so were literal crystals growing from your eyeballs. And horns from your head. And oversized teeth. Aaaand neon red fur that couldn't blend at all. Well, at least blood wouldn't show if he had been covered. That was a bonus, right? Still, he was grateful and appreciative for the wolf for answering his question, and he nodded slowly in response, shifting his weight briefly as his wariness subsided a tad.
"Well, good to know that crystals and fungus growing out of animals isn't exactly normal at least. Thank you, for that information. That's truly... bizarre. I've had to eat prey with it, including recently, but nothing yet unless it takes some time to appear." He paused as the other male began speaking again, and he nodded. "Maybe it's proximity and intent? Maybe they're somewhat aware? Though I suppose, contemplating this now doesn't help." Eru paused, as if heavily chewing on this next thought of his. It wasn't quite... pity. But in a way, it was. Perhaps a sympathy? A powerful looking animal, reduced due to a sickness, carrying weight that drained him and dealing with that shittiness. "Are you hungry? I was intending to hunt here anyway as this area is plentiful, and if I get extra, I don't mind sharing." He didn't. He wasn't overly possessive, and building bonds with others wasn't always a bad thing.

His mind somehow had convinced him that this...dog...was going to try and kill him. He looked at him as he spoke, though his head suddenly felt like it was buzzing and his eyes narrowed. He wasn't sure what brought on the sudden change of thought. But he didn't realize he was thinking it until he was stepping closer, but before he could even launch an attack before the dog attacked first, he blinked and a cloaked figure appeared. Everything else seemingly melted away and he was in his own little world. Just him, this...firefly guy...and the table of items. He didn't know what was going on, but the hooded figure seemed to struggle to remain solid. Crystal-laden ears caught the stranger's words, and so he turned his gaze to the items at hand. He didn't have much to say, mostly because he was surprised at what was going on and the ooze in his mouth had begun to thicken. He nodded at the firefly guy in greeting before picking up Deer Dad's Blessing and handing over three crystals for it. "Thanks," He drawled, ooze dripping from his mouth.

It was like something had changed. The neon colored wolf suddenly went from not hostile at all to oozing hostility as much as he was oozing at all, and Eru sprang backwards, fur along his neck and hindquarters lifting. What the hell? What had changed? Why was the wolf suddenly staring at him like this? A chill ran down his spine, and he shuddered. As he did so, though, a figure seemed to materialize, blocking out the view of the wolf. Seemingly, the creature was communicating with the other as well; both at the same time. This made... no sense. He didn't understand. The weight of the gaze made it hard for him to look away, but he averted his gaze regardless, shivering again. He seemed immobile. It was like he couldn't walk away, or run away, until he engaged with this creature. Until he looked at the items. So he did, and his gaze was drawn to an item in particular. Yet, he didn't have any currency. What was currency?
As quick as the thought came, he felt something roll by his paw. His gaze snapped down, and a crystal sat large and gleaming in the blue light. Was this... the currency? Well, in that case, the only item he could get would be using tis, and it was what he was eyeing anyway. He stepped away from the crystal, nodding towards it to indicate the... thing could have it. "I'll take those," he cautiously said, pointing his nose at the... shoes. That would work, but he was NOT touching that crystal if he could help it.
