Somehow Aku had managed to avoid most of the misfortune befalling Ardent's inhabitants. He'd done such a good job, in fact, that he was oblivious to many of the more sinister things happening. Sure the moon was hard to miss and there were glowing insect-things floating around, but he chalked it up to Boreas just being a different animal than what he was used to. For that reason when he found a strange, luminous string of mushrooms growing up a tree he stepped up to inspect them without fear. He'd ever seen anything glow before and was very tempted to touch them. How odd...

She'd been lucky...she'd been seeing many creatures infected with various things, from crystals and mushrooms to glowing ooze and other maladies. She didn't know how they got infected or if it was contagious, so any prey she managed to catch, she was careful to avoid eating any part that touched the crystals and mushrooms. It was hard though, and she had begun to lose some weight, so she'd been eating a steady diet of fish these days as they seemed to be the safer option. The woman had returned to the place of her birth in an effort to see how things had changed, and since she knew Ignis no longer controlled the lands, she was free to wander in them without repercussions.

she wasn't alone, however, as she spotted someone ahead of her who seemed to be inspecting a stream of mushrooms. The stranger's back was to her, and the mist did well to muffle scents and sounds, so she hadn't realized he was there until she was a couple of yards away. Fireflies flickered around them, trailing up into the sky as if beckoning her to look at the star-streaked blanket. "Strange, isn't it?"

"Speech"

Aku startled and sidestepped as a stranger's voice reached his ears. Even all these seasons later he was still feeling the effects of his time in "captivity" with that mad spirit woman. He now knew she was a living, breathing woman and not all that odd by Boreas standards, but at the time he'd thought she may very well be the bane of his existence.

He calmed and gave the stranger a polite smile as though to say sorry for his reaction. His eyes then went back to the mushrooms. "They are, aren't they? I've never seen anything like them. To be honest I didn't know something like that could grow up here in the cold."

She seemed to have startled the male, a sheepish smile and apologetic look in her eyes when he looked at her. Her ears perked though, when she saw his face. She'd never seen him before, but she had to admit he was...handsome...to say the least. He responded, and she nodded. "They normally don't. At least, I've never seen them here till now." She moved up to get a closer look, noting how they pulsed and glowed just like the ones in the cave she had seen before. Only these were bigger, as were the surrounding crystals. The everlasting darkness seemed to make them stand out even more since there was no other light to really compete. "I was born here. So these are new. Though I imagine it is linked to the rest of the world's disarray at the moment." She looked at him, a firefly passing before her eyes when she did so. "My name is Winter. Sorry for startling you,"

Aku frowned at this information and thoughtfully reached out to touch one of the mushrooms. It's top was silky, almost velvety, under his touch. Curious. He'd never seen a mushroom like that before. Considering the glow it had to be poisonous so he wasn't going to do more than touch it, but still, it was quite beautiful.

"So..." he felt like an idiot, "this isn't normal, then?" That was news to him. Aku had been rolling with the punches because he thought that's just how things were here. "Where I'm from at certain times of the year it is dark all season, day and night, so I thought..." He looked around and took the world in with new eyes before shrugging, simply at a loss for words. Aku shook his head. "I'm Aku."

She watched as he touched a mushroom, and she remembered the ones back in the cave. Those ones seemed almost playful in a way. She wasn't sure how to explain it, but that's the feeling she got from them. "So..." She cocked an ear his way, "this isn't normal, then?" She shook her head. "As far as I'm aware, no." She was interested in the fact that his...homeland...was dark during a certain season no matter the time of day. That was interesting to her. She couldn't imagine it being dark all the time, so when it started to happen, it seemed to freak out a lot of the residents of Boreas and Auster. Her included. "This is the first time it's been this dark for this long from what I remember, though the world is full of curiosities." He introduced himself as Aku, and she dipped her head in acknowledgment. "Nice to meet you, Aku. I must warn you, if you come across any infected, be wary. I've seen wolves and other animals growing mushrooms and crystals. Oozing from their orifices and wounds...I'm not sure how the sickness is transmitted, but I've been lucky so far."

Aku looked over the wares on offer with a frown. Their descriptions were so vague he was not sure he wanted to gamble with them, but this seemed like a once in a lifetime opportunity and he was not sure if he wanted to miss out on that either. In the end he decided to do what he'd been doing since entering Boreas: he would go with the flow and hope it didn't bite him in the ass. "I'll take the glittering concoction." And he held out the correct currency because their exchange was too brief without that action.

Whatever was going on, she was suddenly face to face with a figure she remembered from when she was younger. She blinked and there he was, a table of wares in front of her. Her initial reaction upon seeing him was near panic. He was the one she'd come face to face with in the cave. He was part of the reason she'd been extremely anxious and a nervous wreck for a long time after that. Which in turn had caused her to believe she would never be a good leader despite her father's confidence in her. Her hackles begun to raise but her macaque companion touched her and she stopped. It wasn't this strange beings fault...she hadn't been strong of mind back then. But now? Things were different. She didn't know what these things were, but she still looked them over a bit before deciding. "This one." She motioned to the grow potion and placed a couple crystals on the table for him.

The small woman began to rile at his appearance, but her companion stopped her. She soothed and decided on an item. The figure loomed for a while, as if warning her before disappearing entirely.

Still in the dream state, Aku rolled the newly acquired item around in his paw. The glint of the contents reminded him of snow and when he shook it and set it a'swirl, a snowstorm. It was pretty to look at. Almost too pretty to drink. Almost. He wanted to see what it would do and there was only one way to do that. So, pretty or not, it had to be drunk.

After uncorking the bottle and tossing the stopper aside, Aku brought the bottle to his lips and drank the contents in one go. After swallowing he set the bottle down and took a moment to take stock of himself. He wasn't sure what to expect. To feel different? To be sick? Well, he expected something to happen...but he didn't feel any different? At least not right away? Maybe he needed to give it a moment...
