lick it once, shame on you

The little, scrawny, ragged thing that slunk out from the barn - though he didn't need to be slinking at all, since they were allowed out - more resembled a coyote pup than a wolf of proud lineage and the furtive way he moved was just as reminiscent of those ancient competitors of Wolf, though unlike the more smooth slink of coyotes and foxes he moved with a stiff, jerky, twitchy gait, in sudden fits and starts rather than all at once. Maybe he slunk to avoid his siblings and the possibility of them tagging along with him, but if so it was needless as none of them were even around to see him. When he finally reached the old foundations of an ancient farmhouse, a few of the adults were out and about, though Daemon ignored them in favor of staring with a great deal of intensity at a mushroom. Not, sadly, one of the leftover fungi from the Darkness he had been born and raised in... just a normal, ordinary sort of fungi, but he stared at it as intently as if it had been something that extraordinary. One paw crept towards the fungi, the tip of his tongue sliding between his teeth in a gesture that could have been concentration or the intention to lick it.

Álarr trotted through the range toward a patch of anemone he'd found the previous year. It out to be blooming now if he could just remember where he'd seen it. His raven Brynhildr flew above him but she seemed to be enjoying her flight more so than scanning for plants. He couldn't blame her. The arrival of spring along with the sun's return lightened his spirit.
The healer slowed as he spied movement nearby. His ears flicked forward as he spied one of Chaos' pups. A rather small and runty one that-
"Hey! Don't touch that, it could be dangerous." He bounded over toward the pup. A quick glance over the mushroom brought some relief in that it wasn't one of the mushrooms that had grown inside him during the Darkness.

Daemon froze mid-reach as an adult shouted for him to stop. Tilting his head rather than pulling back, tongue still between his teeth, he looked up at an angle to the adult as he bounded up. His half-lidded eyes were supremely unconcerned at the adult's warning, though he seemed to digest the words, rolling them over in his mouth before tilting his head back to the mushroom. His paw continued to hover over the mushroom a moment before he set it on the ground instead. "I thought they might be," he said indifferently, then added with a distant sort of curiosity, "What do they do? What if I did touch one? What if someone ate one?"

Álarr watched the young pup intently for a moment as the boy slowly put his paw down. He took in the boys questions as his focus turned back to the mushroom. "It depends on the kind. Several of our members were infected with a fungus over the winter that grew inside them. This is not one of those. However, it is still dangerous." He sniffed carefully at the mushroom. "Looks like autumn skullcap." Strange to see it this time of year, assuming the name was indicative of its emergence. In truth he didn't really know the growing habits of this particular mushroom, only what it looked and smelled like, and what it could do if he mistook it for an edible mushroom. After the strange winter and fungi he knew he shouldn't be surprised any more. Especially with old, rotting barn wood soaked from spring rains.
"If you were to eat that it would cause diarrhea and vomiting. It could destroy your liver and even kill you if the poisoning were not treated."
