Waiting beside the starting line, Levi couldn't help but feel a little miffed that he had to race Calypso. That was something he could do back home if he wanted, felt like a waste of time coming all the way here just to be stuck with his biggest sister. He'd managed to beat a yearling before, couldn't he go up against someone who'd really give him a run for his money? He'd been on his best behaviour all day, minded his teeth like a good little Fatalis, it was the least he deserved. With an overly dramatic huffy sigh, Levi rolled his head to look up at his sister, she was even taller with each passing day. When was it gonna end?

"If you lose I'll tell Dad." He told her, his gaze stuck to her form to see if the glow of her pelt would change.

Calypso was placed up against Levi for the Ashen Empire tournament, a pairing that neither pup was entirely pleased with. This was supposed to be about impressing her parents, if she wanted to kick Levi's butt in a race she could do that any day within their own territory. Couldn't they have put her against some non-Fatalis, so that when she won her father might be proud that she'd heightened the family name? Now either way, one Fatalis would be a loser and that wouldn't please Azure in the slightest. Callie sighed, but stomped alongside her smaller brother toward the starting line.

Levi's words had their intended effect, and while Callie's sole outward response was a sharp glare her heart leaped with panic. She blew out a breath willing her body to calm but to no use - her father's judgement was frightening to her, and if she lost... well, then she couldn't lose. "Yeah, well, when you lose, I'm telling mom." It wasn't as sharp of a threat, but Hanako was an adept racer and perhaps Callie could hope she'd be slightly disappointed in Levi for not inheriting that gift.

Calypso waited the cue to start, sinking into a crouch and preparing to push off the ground with all her might when the time was right. Levi was smaller and weighed much less, but Callie was stronger and perhaps that would be enough to overtake his speed. On your marks, get set...

She ran as hard as she can, lowering her head between her shoulders and pinning her ears against the wind. The pup was so focused that she wasn't even able to glance around and see where Levi's stride had taken him.

Levi smirked a little, smug as he watched fire course through her coat. He wasn't sure why she cared so much as in his eyes what their parents thought really didn't seem like such a big deal, but then again he knew in part he was different from the others. And not just because he was so small. At the mention of their Mother he let out an undignified snort, out of all their family she was the worst when it came to fussing. He wouldn't hear the end of it if Cal went tattling to her, making Levi double down on his focus to beat her fair and square, just as he was capable of.

"Whatever." He dismissed, digging his claws into the ground as he rolled his shoulders in preparation.

And then they were off!

Kicking as hard as his hind legs would allow, Levi knew he'd have to work double time to keep pace with his long-legged sister, but even then he wasn't too worried. He'd already beaten a girl twice their age and height, if he could overtake someone of that size and limb length then this should be a little easier. Still, this was a very serious affair and Levi was no slouch. His tiny paws thudded against the ground, leaving dainty tracks in his wake as his heart rate began to pick up the pace, as though falling into rhythm with his gait.

Levi's light pawsteps could be heard at her side and Calypso's head turned sharply to watch him run, shocked that he was able to keep up with her thus far. Those tiny legs? Her long legs? The math didn't work out, but she couldn't spend too much time thinking about it lest she fall further behind. The finish line was in sight and Calypso's firekissed paws hit the ground hard again and again as she ran.

A small part of her wanted to shove her brother aside, to make him lose, but this was a competition and there were witnesses. It was not worth it, and while her father might approve of the dirty underhanded trick, he'd definitely disapprove that she was forced to resort to it at all.

Her neck stretched out, her markings pulsing hard and fast as her overworked heart beat faster and faster. They were nearing the finish line, and soon the whole pack would know that Callie was the fastest of them all.

The finishing line was drawing closer and closer, bobbing into view as Levi's golden little paws blurred in motion. Though he did have a nasty competitive strea that would no doubt get worse as he aged, he'd be a liar if he claimed he didn't enjoy running. Beyond his puppish arrogance and inability- or unwillingness- to see his own faults, only a blind wolf would claim he was slow and sluggish. The fact they were currently neck and neck had the little Fatalis almost snarling in frustration, he could do better, take the lead and snatch victory right out from under Cal's shiny black nose.

Just a little more, than a more after that. He was so close he could almost taste it.
