Cruisin' With An Impala

On Fern’s daily morning patrol, she had spotted a herd of grazing impalas near the border of the castle and the shore. The prey animals were tempting and when the gray girl returned to the castle, she had sought out someone to go hunt with her. Ezra had agreed to help and so, the pair trot the short distance to where Fern last saw the herd. The russet and gray wolves move quickly, not wanting to give the prey time to leave the area. Rain is a constant these days and it helps to cover the scent of the approaching predators as the herd of impalas comes into view. Signaling to stop, Fern stops in a patch of long grass and turns to taller wolf. Keeping her voice low so as not to startle the herd, she says, “I am pretty good at herding if you want to be the ambusher. Those two that seem to be a little way off from the group. It would be easy to separate them from the herd.” Gray paw points to an adult and child impala that have wandered just a little too far from the rest. Quirking an eyebrow, Fern waits to see what Ezra thinks of the plan.

Ezra was pretty much always game for a hunt so when he overheard Fern asking around for help with hunting down some impala he immediately jumped in to help. He hadn’t gone out for a hunt yet for today anyway so it would kill two birds with one stone. He’d get his hunt in for today and he’d get to help another pack mate with something. Seemed like a win win to him!
Fern led the way to where she had seen the impala herd and he stopped when she signaled to, hunkering down while he watched the prey in question for a moment. His pale gaze landed on the pair that Fern had pointed out and he nodded in agreement. It would at least save them from having to try to break one off from the herd. "Sounds good. I’ll go that direction and you drive them toward me.” He was more than happy to be the muscle in this situation. He broke off from her to quietly get into position, the lightly falling rain making it easier for him to hide his creeping paw steps and his scent as he drew closer to their target.

Ocean-hued eyes look to Ezra, waiting to hear what he thinks of the plan. As he responds, Fern’s tail gives a gently wag and she nods her head firmly as she gives the russet wolf a smile. As Erza moves to get into position, the gray girl whispers, “Be safe.” before creeping forward to get closer. The rain works in their favor and, as Fern moves, she keeps a glancing over to see the russet wolf’s progress as she creeps forward. When she is as close as she dares to get, Fern looks to Erza to see if he is ready. Taking a deep breath, the gray girl coils her muscles and gives the antlered wolf a short nod.
The pent-up energy explodes as Fern rushes from her hiding spot, giving a sharp bark and long growl toward the prey. Heads turn as the gray wolf appears and the impalas quickly start to leap away. The two that were a little further from where the group had grazed are easy to separate. She drives them toward Erza’s hiding spot, snapping and growling as the trio move. Fern moves swiftly driving them ever closer to the ambush spot.

Ezra crouched in his chosen hiding spot, peeking over the grasses that mostly concealed him to watch as Fern worked her way toward their prey and waited eagerly to pounce. She held up her end of the bargain and started driving the impalas toward him, the rest of the herd bouncing away in the other direction. The two unfortunate ones were herded toward him and as soon as the adult of the pair was close enough he Jumped up, biting into its throat to bring it down so he could end it quickly. If he was fast enough maybe he could catch the younger one without having to chase it down too much, but between the two he’d rather have the larger one if he could only have one. He pulled the impala down to the ground by its neck, biting hard with serrated teeth as he used his weight to pin it down and crush its throat so it died quickly and easily.

Fern drives the two impalas toward the ambush point and Ezra jumps out when they are close. Quickly, the russet wolf takes down the older impala and Fern dashes after the younger one. It doesn’t get too far before the gray girl catches up and sinks her teeth into one of its back legs. The creature grunts in pain as Fern throws her weight sideways and drags the impala off its hooves. It screams in terror as it is taken down, the fear radiating off the young animal in waves. Quickly, she releases the leg and moves up towards its head. Thankfully, Erza is already there putting a quick and merciful end to the poor creature’s life.
A huge smile appears as she looks to her hunting partner and exclaims, “We got two!” Eyes dance with happiness as she moves to help Erza get the impalas ready for the short trip back to the castle.

Ezra quickly went to help Fern finish taking down the second, younger impala after he was done with the first, ending their hunt as quickly as it began. He licked his lips clean of any blood as he stood back from their kills with a satisfied sign, offering Fern a celebratory grin when she mentioned how they had gotten two. "Yeah! Well done!" he said with a nod. This a pretty impressive haul to bring back considering it was just the two of them. Even the younger impala looked like it had a decent amount of meat on it, especially if it was butchered correctly. Now they just had to get them back to the castle. "Think you can handle carrying that one back?" he said, nodding to the younger, smaller of the two. He took the larger adult, working his head and his small, budding antlers under the animal to slip it onto his back so that it was draped across him with its hooves lightly dragging along the ground. If they had a long way to go this probably wouldn't have worked, but it wasn't a very long trip back up to the castle so he'd manage fine. They walked back up to the castle together with the pair of impalas, happy that their hunt had been so successful.
