I'm Tired of Looking for Answers

After their morning adventure with the fish and the bears Birna had insisted on a leisurely nap on the sunny rocks near the waterfall before heading out to hunt the mountain goats that lived around the peak. She'd recruited the young wolf to assist her. Granted the child wasn't well colored for stalking prey but Birna was fairly sure that mountain goats could not see shades of red or orange so there was a good chance Ulmaria would be just fine. Either way Birna intended to use the girl as a distraction and driver rather than the main ambusher anyway. She'd found a small herd of mountain goats nearby. She gave Ulmaria her instructions then carefully moved to get below the herd.

Speech

Ulmaria hadn't ever really had a hunting lesson before. Oh sure, she'd get after prairie dogs and rabbits and even the occasional fish, but going after the agile mountain goats seemed especially challenging. Birna had instructed her to get above the herd then dive down at them and try to funnel one of the injured males toward the leopard. Ulmaria wasn't as agile as Birna but she didn't want to decline the challenge, especially after the mess with the bears. She climbed carefully up the rocks, trying to move slowly and quietly. Every so often one of the grazing creatures would look over toward her and she'd freeze, waiting for them to look away.

Birna worked her way down below the herd, moving carefully so as not to startle them. It would be disasterous if the goats started climbing up toward the pup. While the girl was spirited it would be nearly impossible for her to catch one without injuring herself. Birna was built for hunting on this terrain far more than the wolf. Soon Birna arrived at her spot. She settled in behind some brush and waited, her eyes following the pup until the girl was in position. Her raven called to signal the girl and Ulmaria let out a bark, shooting down toward the herd. Birna prepared herself.

Speech

Ulmaria got into position and checked to make sure Birna was ready. She listened for the call of the raven and once she heard it she leapt down toward the goats, barking loudly to startle them. The immediately scattered, the wounded male stumbling and buying Ulmaria enough time to get down behind it and start herding it toward Birna. Her tail waved wildly as she tried to drive the goat down without losing her balance. She was very aware of how steep everything was and the goat moved so well down the rock face even woiunded as it was.

Birna coiled her legs beneath her, her paws working up and down as she waited for the goat to get closer. When Ulmaria attacked the goats scattered but the girl did well in focusing on their target and ignoring the other, healthy animals. Birna could see the goat starting to get ahead of and away from the girl so she leapt early. In a few bold leaps she was next to the goat and then the mad scramble ensued. She dove and twisted after the goat before finally tripping it. A moment later her jaws were around the goat's throat. After that it didn't take long for it to smother and the two had a nice fresh dinner.
