Not just any bamboo stalk would do. It had to be thick and sturdy enough to withstand the weight and impact of something landing on it, but would also need to splinter a little to inflict as much damage as possible. The taller structures that formed the Maze's walls were out of the question and Hattori had little interest in dragging bamboo throughout the whole territory, so he skirted around the sides of his land, head tilted up as he examined what he had to work with.
Perhaps it was not a job he ought to undertake alone, but he imagined someone would pass by soon enough and offer a helping paw. Till then he dragged along his sack of equipment, sharp blades and saws along with tools to aid digging when it came to it.

The flop-eared warrior had been aimlessly tracking a scent - a deer or something smaller, judging by the weakness of its trail. Soon enough, though, the Hohei gave up on it, figuring it too much of a challenge for a piece of meat that would barely feed one person. Sighing heavily, antlered cat and Akita in tow, he wandered the outskirts kf the bamboo maze under some guise of a patrol instead. It wasn’t long that he’d been walking when he saw on the side of the maze his Kaicho, dragging a heavy sack of what appeared to be some types of tools. Curiosity and an obligation to assist drew Usagi closer, his mossy gaze trained upon his larger superior. The bag had some sort of blades, from what he could observe from the glint of silver from inside - was he perhals trying to cut down a bamboo stalk? It’d need to be a much thinner piece then - the thicker bamboo was near impossible to even nick. "Kaicho," Usagi greeted monotonously, yet respectful all the same. With a flick of his ear, he added, "Would you like any assistance?" There was no harm in offering some help, he supposed. Besides, it was within his scope of duties to partake in such matters - including crafting useful items and traps for the pack. ”Speech” ’Thought’ |

Hattori glanced over at the sound of the approaching Hohei, he wasn't surprised to see the warrior out and about but found his offer of help well-placed. He was a useful wolf to have around, one that proved himself to be an asset time and time again. Dropping the sack, Hattori nodded.
"Yes, if you will." From the looks of it, the dappled wolf had already put two and two together, could follow the Kaicho's line of thought without too much direction. Good. "I intend to make a pitfall with some bamboo. With some stalks about...this width. " He made his way over to the shrubbery, and extended his paw as he measured how thick the stacks were. Just a little smaller than his paw, but still sturdy.
Bending down to his sack, he rummaged around for a two handled saw. Handles wide enough for both wolf to grab an end and saw back and forth. Doing it alone would have been impossible, he would have had to call for his akita to help, but now Usagi was here there was no need for that.
"Start slow. Watch for splinters." He instructed as he picked up his end and waited for Usagi to do the same. Once he'd done so he shuffled over to the bamboo and got into position, slowing ripping the saw wide to side as he carved out a line.

He was quick to take the other side of the curved saw, sawing with Hattori’s momentum to slice a clean line theough the stalk. It was hard work, but the stalk would soon fall to the ground with a thump. Mossy eyes flickered to his superior. "How many stalks do you think we’ll need?” He inquired simply - though he was willing to do as many as needed, perhaps knowing a good number would help them both to determine the size of the pit later on as well. ”Speech” ’Thought’ |

The pair sawed in forced silence, mouths full as the pulled back and forth, intending to fill the ditch his companions were preparing with enough stalks. As to how many, he wasn't totally sure. As this was just a test of sorts he didn't want to go overboard and prepare too many, but he didn't want to set the experiment up for failure because he'd been complacent.
He lowered the saw and thought for a moment longer.
"We can start with six for now."
It took a considerable amount of time to gather the total amount of bamboo shafts, and Hattori's jaw ached with the strain by the time they were done. The lines of wood had been piled into a neat triangle and were quickly gathered by Hattori's companions who had just finished digging out the trench. Dragging them along, Hattori waited for Usagi to follow suit as the group moved to the furthest edge of the territory. Right on the cusp of no man's land.
The way they had cut the bamboo ensured there was a slanted, blade like edge on the tips. But Hattori made a point of sanding it further to a point with a few rubs of metal. Putting them into place was going to be easier said than done, it was a good thing Usagi was here for extra manpower.
"Drive them in deep with the tips facing up, after we can cover the pit with a mesh and leaves. We will need to tell the others of the trap perhaps mark it out so no one falls in." The last thing he wanted to deal with was a pup who'd impaled themselves by accident. The pit trap was only about large enough to bring down a smaller sized deer, nothing massive but it was certainly a start.

Usagi had helped Hattori with the sawing - he, too, began to feel the exertion of the effort as his jaw pounded. Though, his threshold for pain was decent, and their work was important - feeding the pack and all its young members. Six stalks, as his Kaicho mentioned, seemed to be sufficient for their pit trap, and he nodded in agreement. As the dire’s companions swept up the materials, Usagi followed suit, towards the edge of the packlands. No doubt a more secluded region was suitable for their idea - if it had been any closer into the maze the chances of accidental impalement would be astronomical.
As they approached the trench, Usagi noticed the stalks he and Hattori had cut down were sharpened at the tips - no doubt for a quick, efficient impalement of some poor creature that would fall into the trap. Or at least, that’s how it was supposed to work. Usagi carefully made his way into the trench, doing as his Kaicho asked and driving the stalks into the softened, churned earth with the tips facing upward. It seemed to work, and soon he had all six stalks with sharpened tips up dug into the solid ground. Satisfied, Usagi used his limb strength to climb out of the trench with ease, and upon standing a ways away from his Kaicho, briefly shook himself of the earth he’s accumulated on his pelt. It was true that they’d need a way to warn others - especially for the pups - of the trench. It’d be covered so any unfrotunate soul, even a wolf, could fall in if one wasn’t careful.
"I will be sure to let others of the pack know," He said to his superior. "I can try and mark the stalks in front of the trench with a warning synbol of some kind, as well." A distinct ‘X’ or a universal marking that everybody understood the meaning of could help avoid any accidents.

Hattori was content to watch the others work, to take a moment to mull it all over and observe from afar. It was worth a try and if Hattori was not content with the results then they could easily dismantle the trap and use the spikes for something else. He'd been thinking of using some bamboo to form some bridges over the bay, float them atop the shorter channels, making the area even easier to traverse and fish. Knowing all this effort wouldn't go to waste pleased the Kaicho and he appreciated the warrior's line of thought, would leave him to deal with it, if he so desired.
"I will leave organising it to you then, check on the trap periodically if you have time. Report to me how it fares."
