Tut-Tut It Looks Like Rain
Kione Weather Lesson

Keahi sits on the sandy shore, looking out toward the horizon and the clouds that are slowly pushing up toward Boreas. She eyes them carefully, noting they are traveling toward path she will need to take to get home. The week is almost up on her time down in Auster and she has come here to get a read on the weather before heading back north. Winter is in full swing across the land bridge and the wolf wants to avoid any storms that might be rolling in. Judging by the bank of clouds that are slowly marching toward the northern continent, a large storm is rolling in and she ponders staying a few more days to avoid getting caught in it. Blue eyes look to the sky, remembering the lessons her mother taught her about reading the weather.

Kione found the idea of two packs being close friends an interesting concept and wondered if it was a normal thing for wolves or if these packs were just special. The wild dog course of course ask but though he mused on it now it wasn’t generally a top question on his mind. It wasn’t a thing his family of other wild dogs had ever done but it seemed the reason for that could be his pack had been the only one on this entire land. Kione shook that thought from his mind before it tried to hit his spirit.
Easy enough today to stop such thoughts, looking ahead he spotted sand and beach. He’d found the opposite end of the land mass. Not nearly as wide as boreas was it seemed. That’s fine, it was wide enough for packs not to be overly cramped for space and the beach was always a nice spot to visit. The sand gae way to his paws, moisture trapped in the sand granules giving it a squishy feeling, and a few granules refusing to leave his paws when lfted back up. The ocean waves were slapping heavily onto themselves as wind was blowing in.
His gaze moved to where he could easily see the hallows castle and then continued to the beach, spotting Keahi watching the sky as well. “Hello miss, again you show up. Must enjoy water almost as much as me. Hoping for bird dinner?” He wasn’t serious about thinking she was hunting for flying birds, just opening up for conversation on what she was up to. Kione likewise glanced to the sky, instead of focusing on what the sky said by view, his nose scenting the air for an idea.

Waves lap at the shore, their increased force and frequency adding another piece to the weather puzzle that Keahi is reading. The sun shines brightly overhead while a strong wind blows in from the north to ruffle her fur and bring the scent of rain to her nose. A voice pulls the red wolf from her musings, red head turning to look at the painted dog that approaches. Giving Kione a friendly smile, the tropical wolf chuckles and shakes her head, pointing a red paw out to cloud laden horizon as she says, “Not today. Reading the weather for my trip home. Do you know how to read clouds?”
Lowering her paw to pat the sand beside her, Keahi invites the painted dog to join her while she says, “There are a lot that goes into the reading the weather. See how the waves have picked up intensity? That says there is a storm out on the water. That with the strong breeze tells me that pack of clouds is a strong snowstorm that is heading toward Boreas.” Blue eyes look to the painted dog, curious if Kione wishes to hear more about reading the weather. Eyes slide to the golden granules of sand that make up the shore, admiring the way they seem to glow in the sunlight.

Kione nods at her explanation of checking on the weather. Lowering his head momentarily to scent the sand, finding something odd about the smell he’s picking up. It’s like there's something in the sand but all about them instead of one object beneath his feet. Was it more than just granules here? The microscopic bacteria couldn’t be seen or understood but with his nose pressed down close to it Kione could tell there was something more to it than normal. A mystery to solve someday perhaps.
Glancing from Keahi back to the sky, “I know a bit. I use my nose a lot for the weather.” When she mentioned the wind Kione nodded, both the wind and the scent informing him of the upcoming storm. The fact she could tell him snow going to boreas was impressive and unknown to him. “Impressive. I know what's coming to us, I wouldn’t have caught that part for farther away on the snow.”
A playful grin looking at the short-coated wolf, “what else do you see in the sky?”

A chuckle is given to Kione as he noses the sand, trying to find the interesting scent that coats the granules. She contemplates telling him their secret about how the sand glows under the moonlight but she decides to just bring him back here at night and allow him to see the effect for himself. His praise is given and the red wolf dips her head in thanks. Then he asks what else she sees in the sky and Keahi once again turns her blue gaze to the clouds. Humming to herself, she watches the patchwork groups of clouds before pointing to a large cluster that was moving toward them. She says, “You see those clouds? They are low and their tops have grown tall meaning they are going to bring a great storm. However, you notice how the tops stick out both sides? The longer ends points to where the storm is going to take place.”
Allowing her paw to fall back to the sand, Keahi turns her blue gaze to Kione and says, “That storm is going to miss this continent. It will bring strong winds and waves but nothing more. The humidity will also increase so be ready to spend plenty of time in the water.” A laugh bubbles out as she looks to the dog who has quickly become her friend. For a moment, she wishes she could take him back to her island and show him all the beauty that beyond the ocean. Maybe one day.

Kione nodded to her words, “I scent the rain but it is faint,” Kione offers his own view by what he senses. His own gaze studying the clouds, “I can see they are packed fat with rain,” Kione seemed to agree easily enough. She liked to hum to herself when thinking Kione noticed. What did he do when he thought?
Apparently what he did when thinking was explore. “Yeah, that’s good to know. I never thought about where they pointed. Good to know.” Kione had made his way towards the water, stepping in even as his head lowered, even in the water he caught the hint of the smell he’d found in the sand so whatever it was mixed into the waves or was on the sand underneath as well. Moisture in the sand meant the scent could be from either source. Ah well, another day.
Kione turned around, moving farther back on the beach. “Thanks for the tips, I’ll keep them in mind.”
