With partners paired off and chosen, Azure moved to square off against his first opponent. He had been surprised to see her even enter the competition, but pleasantly so. Keahi to his knowledge was simply a diplomat and he had not yet seen evidence of her being able to hold her own in battle at all. So far the wolf had been a good one, pleasant and respectful and now with this tournament, showing another very important trait - ambition.

"Good luck." Azure offered across the way. What was left of his ears pulled back to the skull, his tail flagging out behind him for balance. His heavy frame sunk low as he fell into his practiced combat stance, bear paws spread wide and gripping the earth. He waited until Keahi would give the gesture that she was ready as well, and then sprung. Closing the gap between them in ground-eating strides and rising his front end at the last moment, aiming to fall onto her shoulders in a grapple.

Word of a mini-tournament being held within the Armada had reached Keahi’s ears and the red woman eagerly signed up. Of course, she wants the chance to be the Armada’s champion in Valta’s upcoming tournament, it would give her the opportunity to show her Alpha that she can protect herself. She had been immediately paired against said Alpha, Azure, which excited and slightly terrified the tropical wolf.

Stepping into the clearing where they would fight, the Warlord offers her words of luck and Keahi offers him a pleasant and respectful bow of her head as she says, “Good luck to you too, Warlord.” Immediately, she falls into her defensive stance, spreading her legs, bending her knees, toes spread to grip the earth. Ears slick back and flatten against her skull, eyes narrow, lips pull back and she nods that she is ready for Azure to begin the fight.

The larger wolf charges, bearing down on the red wolf and she does not flinch, nor does she shift to move away. At the last moment, Azure raises his front end off the ground and Keahi finally reacts. As he shifts his weight into his back paws, the red woman allows her legs to fold while tossing her body to the side. Rolling away, she feels one of Azure’s large bear paws smack into her shoulder, leaving behind a hefty bruise. As the roll finishes, she springing back up to her paws and lunges forward, aiming to try and bite at the leg and paw that had smacked her.

"Keahi Mogotsi"

It was rare Azure was put up against a wolf so agile and none had ever attempted to dodge his grapple in this way. A grin tugged at his maw as she rolled, his paws hitting the ground with an unsatisfactory thud. They had hit Keahi on the way down, but her agility had avoided the grab as well as the deadly claws that curved out from his mutations. Azure recovered quickly, arching his body inwards toward her as he moved to reposition, though unable to match the red wolf's speed. Her jaws flew forward and while his limb recoiled to his chest, he was not able to avoid the touch of teeth entirely. They slid down the top of his wide paw, raking divots through the fur and skin as he pulled the limb back.

With his other limb he moved to counter, slamming his injured paw down to carry his weight and throwing the other paw out toward her face as she bit. The angle of the slap was deliberate to keep the curved claws away from sensitive eyes, his intention only to land a heavy blow of his pawpad onto the side of her muzzle before she could withdraw it.

"Speech"

Her bite lands and she feels her teeth rake divots into Azure’s paw. While Keahi does not want to leave the Warlord with any lasting injury, the red woman does want him to know that she is serious. As his massive paw pulls away to slam on the ground, she shifts her weight backward into her hind legs preparing for her next attack.

Azure means business and, as the opposite paw swings for her muzzle, Keahi cannot help but grin in joy. Because of her next planned attack and the speed with which the massive man moves, the red woman is forced to absorb the full force of the blow. Eyes squint and body braces as his paw nears but, no matter how ready she thinks she is, nothing could have prepared her for the heavy blow.

Head snaps sideways, as stars burst across her vision and tears immediately sting her eyes. Muzzle smarts as snot suddenly drains from her nostrils. Damn, Azure is powerful and Keahi thanks her lucky stars that he is on her side and that this is only a friendly spar. However, there is still the matter of the fight to finish.

Everything happens in the span of a few seconds and, as the red woman turns her head back to face her opponent, determination blazes in her ocean blue eyes. She has been coiling the muscles in her back legs and, as her head lines up with Azure, Keahi releases a loud snarl and aims to leap up toward the man’s throat, teeth seeking to try pinch the fur there. Maybe her attack will catch him off guard and send him off balance, allowing the red woman to claim victory.

Whatever happens, Keahi has enjoyed her fight with Azure.
