We're All A Little Mad Here
Solo Samhain Straw Wolf Prompt
The descent into wonderland was just as you may have thought it to be. Absorbed in the ever-present magic- shuffled by familiars of different sizes and shapes. All taking their jobs ever so seriously, all playing a part as a cog in their machine to achieve the desired goal in perfect unison- whatever that may be. Upon her arrival, the Carpathius girl spent a fair bit of time simply watching. The clearing hummed with the life of all kinds. There were already wolves present, each interacting with their own crafting stations. All seemingly working to complete similar projects- some in pairs, others by themselves. As wolves finished, stepping back to admire their works, she was eager to get a glimpse at what they had worked so hard for. In their wake, they had made a wolf out of straw. Her mind instantly shifted back to the snow wolf she had made, and a light illuminated behind those pale blue eyes of hers. Talyssa couldn't help the burning desire to participate, herself. Her attention combed her surroundings, but it wasn't long before she noticed a vacant crafting station with all the materials present that she could have ever wanted. It was like the familiars knew.
The fawn-spotted fae cautiously approached the empty station, eyes slightly widened as she began to take in what exactly it was to be her task. Blinking a few times in rapid precession, she started to shape in her mind what her intentions were. Of course, he would be made out of straw. But it wasn't going to stand on its own as the snow did. However, nestled off to the side she noticed a wad of twine. Thinking back to when Mercury used a similar twine to tie off their wreath, she came to the conclusion she could use it for a similar purpose here. Laying out the pieces of twine- untangling them, and making them more accessible, she arranged them within arm's reach so she didn't have to struggle when she began. When she felt like she was prepared, she moved to make the first bundle of straw.
Talyssa meant to make the legs first. It wasn't going to big as her Daddy, but still, she hoped to make him a little bigger than herself. With that in mind, she rolled bundles of straw together, before grabbing a piece of the twine she laid out. Tying it at the top, she slowly began to let go. But as she released some of the tension, she could see that it was going to need another wrap of twine to hold it together properly. But once she got the bottom part secured, she was actually quite pleased with how it turned out ... now she had 3 more to make. Once the legs were done, she moved on to assemble a torso. The only difference really being, that she needed to use a lot more of the straw to make the chest a little more bulky than the legs. Bundling it together with the twine, she used a third piece in the middle to help make it extra secure as well.
Now how was she going to attach the legs to the body? Looking around through the materials, some pretty straight sticks caught her attention. Grabbing one of the thin limbs, she took it, and shoved it about halfway into one of the legs, leaving the rest to protrude from the top. Taking the leg that now had some extra solid length to it, she shoved the rest of the rod into the torso. Once you could no longer see the stick on either side, she decided to test it. Taking her paw, she applied a little pressure to see if it would hold. It wiggled a little, and he probably wasn't going to get up and run away. But it would hold enough for her purposes. Delighted with her progress, she quickly attached the other legs in the same fashion. Once all the legs were deeply rooted into the body, she helped her Scarewolf to his feet and was very pleased that he had no problems standing on his own. But now, he needed a head.
She didn't really know how to make it more rounded by his supposed head, and narrower at his nose. But she certainly gave it her best shot. She started thin, and bundled it on the nose side, before attempting to pack more into his head. It took a few more pieces of twine to make it look okay. But what do you expect from a wolf made out of straw? Once Talyssa was satisfied, she attached it with a stick into the torso much as she did the legs. She did have to reposition it a couple of times because he kept trying to fall face forward. But after getting a little longer stick, she managed to make it work.
Now that she had a solid frame, her attention shifted to the scraps of textiles of various patterns. Without any hesitation, she took some of the larger pieces to drape over his back and to tuck into his tummy beneath. With the smaller pieces, she wrapped his legs, but in the end, made the decision to leave his face exposed. After combing through the pile of decorations, she found three fairly large buttons that she could use for the eyes and nose. And at the very bottom of the pile, she found a hat! Gathering the final touches together, she circled around to his front to apply them. She wedge the buttons into place, and plopped the hat on his head. And when she completed her project, she stepped back to admire him. Her Scarewolf turned out brilliantly, and her pride all but radiated off her. She only hoped that she might get to show her parents sometime as the familiars whisked him away.
