Now that Tyto had been given plenty of time to settle in and learn Valhalla’s lands and customs, it was high time to see how the man was in a fight. So, donned in his armor and bracers, with Lyr, Lunira and Sädir in tow, Ardyn trotted briskly toward the meeting clearing, tail flowing.
As he went, he threw a howl into the air, inviting Tyto to the meeting grounds for a spar. As he reached them, he stretched lengthily with a pleasurable groan as his joints popped and the last stiffness of the night’s patrol quivered out of his muscles.
Finally, he settled into a light, ready stance, watching for the quiet newcomer as his front toes flexed lightly, claws sliding in and out of their sheaths.

Ardyn at first glance is as black as can be imagined with a raven sheen.
Closer inspection proves that he shimmers in fire tones in every hair on his hide right down to his lashes.
More obviously, he glows like a bed of coals and flames with every movement and brush of fur. His tail is usually wagging, so blazes like a torch.
His adult teeth are in and his saber canines have grown to their full length (see profile). His mane and tail hair have grown to full length, as well as being lightweight and easily buffeted by breezes.
A look at his front paws will give the impression of hands, with his dew claw dropped low and lengthened into a functioning thumb, and his toes elongated into fingers. He has retractable, solid black cat-like claws on every paw.
Ardyn has developed a glowing mast of intricate markings in fire and ice colors over his face, symmetrical over the last seasons of Year 17 (see profile for details). During hunts or raids/sieges, he will smudge them out with black soot to cover the glow, otherwise, they are bright enough to note at first direct glance at his face. Not all his artwork currently portrays the mask markings.
He is also often bedecked in beads, small bells, feathers in blues, ribbons and braids thanks to the Ooze Event of Halloween 2021, and the Coathanger item that he got. The accessories generally are seen most in his mane and tail hair. He removes the brighter items and bells for hunts or battle.

He was being summoned. And for once in his life, he actually welcomed these kinds of disturbances. Not that it was much of a disturbance, he wasn't doing anything particularly important when he heard Adryn's call, nor was he busy. He had been given time to settle in, learn the lay of the land, and learn Valhalla's customs. He had wasted no time in learning the life here...it was the only thing that made his life feel stable. And he hoped to whatever gods existed that this wouldn't be ripped from him anytime soon. His companions joined him as they returned from scout work. Informing him of a few changes in the lands, along with gossip that was going on beyond Valhalla's walls. He nodded to them as they all made their way to meet Ardyn. No doubt Valhalla's king already knew of some, if not all, of what was happening beyond their walls, but it never hurt to keep gathering information whenever and wherever he could. He approached the location where Ardyn waited, magenta gaze taking in his stance. He raised a brow in question, though had a bit of suspicion what this might be about. Although Tyto was generally quiet, he was keen and observant. "Good morning, Ardyn. Starting the day with a duel?"

Tyto was quick to arrive, and Ardyn grinned lightly at the man’s query. “I figured I’d see how you are as a fighter. In the event of a largescale battle, I’d like to know where you’d be best to defend or attack.”
His voice took on a wry amusement as he added, “And it’s always nice to get the blood pumping.”
He nodded to each of his companions, introducing them cheerfully in turn, “This is Lyr, Lunira, and Sädir. They’ll be assisting me in our spar if you’re open to it.”
He tucked his chin lightly to guard his throat, nodding to the older man in an invitation to take the first move, eyes twinkling in a light challenge, tail flicking level with his spine, long hair hanging like a banner, glittering with flame.

"Fair enough, hopefully, I won't disappoint." His voice held amusement, though within, he felt a tad...unready. He hadn't fought in some time, probably since Winterfell's raid on Ashen. He couldn't even remember how long ago that was...but it had been a long time. “And it’s always nice to get the blood pumping.” That comment drew a small chuckle from him, "Couldn't agree more." |

Ardyn grinned at Tyto’s acceptance of the spar, nodding at the two companions as they were introduced, and Lunira, Sädir and Lyr each shifted their positions, the cats aiming to begin circling and eyeing the companions as well as Tyto, Lunira on the left of the man and Sädir to the right while Lyr pushed off and wheeled in the air above, glowing piebald plumage fluttering in the air.
Tyto took the first move as offered, and Ardyn watched him, settling into his own defenses and taking stock in the split seconds before the fight started.
As Tyto ducked to Ardyn’s left, the man’s own right, Ardyn pushed off, bounding forward and evading the man’s initial attacks as his left foreleg snapped up, claws remaining sheathed as his weight shifted to his other three legs, as he sought to wrap his long digits around Tyto’s left hind leg around the hock, hoping to yank the leg out from under Tyto and pull the man off balance.
He let his front end drop simultaneously and sought to drive his left shoulder into Tyto’s left side just ahead of the man’s thigh, hoping to knock the slightly shorter wolf from his paws.
His tail flicked between his hind legs even as he sought to swing his haunches away to his own right to guard against any attacks the man might launch at the easy target of long hair.

He hadn't fought against someone with paws that worked like a monkey's hands. His attack missed, and Ardyn retaliated by grabbing his hind hock and pulling it out from under him, causing the man to be thrown off balance as his leg was yanked out from beneath him. His eyes widened in surprise, and a growl bubbled from his throat when Ardyn shoulder knocked him completely off his feet. Dust was thrown up in the scuffle and it made things harder to see for Tyto. He quickly rolled to his feet, using his hearing to pinpoint where Ardyn was before lunging out through the dust and aiming to try and slam into his ribs, teeth seeking to grab the tender flesh behind Ardyn's elbow. |

His attacks came out successful and fruitful as Tyto toppled to the ground with a puff of dust.
Ardyn released his grip and danced into the dust cloud to Tyto’s right, his own left, letting the obscuring cloud shield him as Lunira sought to dart in from behind Tyto to aim a slap of her paw to the man’s left hip.
Ardyn listened for the man’s paws as Tyto sought him, then stepped to his own right as Tyto popped out of the dust. His haunches bunched as he pivoted on them to his own right and sought to let Tyto slide up beside him, his left side to Tyto’s right, only slightly buffeted by the initial slam – that would probably leave a light bruise but nothing worse – but evading the man’s teeth.
Tail sweeping behind him for balance, Ardyn swiftly resettled his stance and shifted his weight to his other three legs as his left foreleg swept up and he sought to snatch Tyto’s right foreleg in his left paw’s digits and yank, hoping to use the other man’s own momentum against him.

He couldn't deny that he was getting increasingly frustrated with each moment that passed in their spar. Tyto wasn't really used to fighting others who bore unnatural mutations, so these hand-like paws that Ardyn had were something new to him. Was that why he was much more agile? Or was the Strix male just rusty after not having fought in so long? Whatever the case, he felt like he was either losing his touch or perhaps the younger Ardyn just had plenty more practice and better training than Tyto ever had. |

Ardyn spotted the teeth coming as Tyto had managed to adjust himself. Swiftly, his target changed, and he aimed to draw back and slam his left paw down instead on Tyto’s nose in a fist instead, seeking to stun the man’s nose and blind him with tears if possible as he sought to swerve away from the man, regardless of success.
Lunira veered off to avoid the other cat’s slap, and Sädir ducked in to pounce the Lynx from behind in a bearhug and bring the cat down. Lyr, meanwhile, dropped to aim a sharp peck at Tyto’s tail, seeking to distract the man from Ardyn for half a beat.
Ardyn was pleased with Tyto’s display, even if the man did come into frustration somewhat easily.
