If she was going to weathering the winter here, then she would need to bulk up and learn how to survive when the temperatures dropped. It hadn't taken Arayne long to notice that the bears in the area had begun to congregate around a large river, as if they were waiting for something. As days passed, she discovered the reason: the river was a salmon run. Red-bodied, with curved green faces, they swarmed the river in their hundreds, leaping upstream in their frantic desire to spawn. The bears used the river like a buffet, and it didn't take long for Arayne to get an idea.

She picked a spot farther away from the bears, unwilling to get into a row with one over a fishing spot. Less fish came her way, but she needed a lot less meat than a bear did. She had already caught two, and left the bones in a neat pile on the banks. Her paws were cold from the frigid water, but the excitement of finding a good food source helped her endure. If she could catch more fish, then she could cache them nearby and come back to them when pickings were slim. With a splash, another salmon attempted to leap over the three-foot-high crag she had positioned herself on, only to get caught in her jaws. She pranced back to shore, crunching down to stop it's thrashing, and dropped it on the stones, then went back to get another. Plenty of gulls and ravens swarmed overhead, but the majority of them were down by the bears, where there were more fish. Her catch was relatively safe from scavengers.

At least, she thought it was.

Crisp fall leaves littered the ground of the northern forest, and Jack was once again on his roaming adventures. Though he was a member of Tortuga, he didn't like to stay at home for too long unless absolutely necessary. And right now, there were plenty of his packmates watching their home whilst he decided to go and investigate the surrounding lands to make sure that no enemies would try to attack them. So far, his scouting was a success. He hadn't caught scent nor sight of a hair from the Glaciem wolves, and he figured that most of them were out fighting the war or remaining within their camp. It was all fine and dandy for the rugged warrior, after all, he had nothing to worry about now that the Glaciems were busy. He could easily saunter in to their territory, after all, if he was right on what the king was like then Jack guessed that he would have taken all his able bodied warriors to the seige. Possibly leaving behind the pregnant and the imprisoned.

Ears picked up the sound of nearby water, and off in the distance he could hear the low rumblings of bears. A wry smirk lifted his face as he realized that it would be about time for the bears to be at the river for the seasonal salmon run. Last year, Jack had toyed with them as he would steal their catches from right under their noses. It was always fun to see a flustered and frustrated bear, and Jack was always quicker and sneakier then a lumbering beast. Granted they could run fast, but they could never seem to keep up with the pirate. Crossing into the rocky grounds of the river, he searched around for a potential target, and it was then that he saw a wolf near the waters edge and away from the main activity. His tail flicked behind his hocks as he planned a thought. Shining brown eyes would then flicker towards the ladies recent catch, and then he was in motion upon silent paws. With her back turned, Jack closed in as the dame focused on catching her next meal. And as silent as a hawk, he swooped in and nabbed the fish from its place upon the ground and would then keep moving to be several yards away atop his own flat rock overlooking the water. He placed the fish between his forepaws as he settled himself onto his belly, tail flicking in amusement as he gaze at the unsuspecting woman. "Oi! You havin' fun there lass?"

Arayne had been sneaking up on an especially large fish trapped in the shallows when a raucous male voice drew her attention. She turned in confusion, only to hear a rapid splashing as the fish she had been stalked leaped out of the pool and began scrambling frantically upstream. She watched it flop away, then turned back to the stranger with a look of exasperation. He was brown-colored like here, but his markings were different and contrasted far more than her simple dark overfur. He was hardly bad-looking, though, although at the moment she was a little too annoyed to notice that much. "Well, I was until you scared off the--" She did a double-take.

What was that at his paws. Was that her fish?!

It was, there were the teeth marks on it. "Hey!" she cried indignantly, hackles rising, "that's mine!" She stalked forward, tail lashing angrily. Of all the rotten things. First he made her lose a catch, and then he stole from her? This indignant reaction was primarily due to her lack of experience. She had practically never hunted alone, and her once-royal status had made her more or less invulnerable to thieves. She was fully aware that such privileges no longer applied to her, but that didn't stop her from getting angry.
