The thing about Gourami is that he is unpredictable. A loose cannon that will turn on a dime. Some might call it bi-polar, but it may be more severe than that. Unable to control his emotions, he can be happy one moment and the next? Ready to slaughter all who stand in his path. What doesn't help is that he is tiny so killing anyone or anything is difficult. His only offensive ability is his teeth and at this age, they do hardly anything. Tiny, weak, unable to really do any damage. Something he would need to do about later in life. When he's older, smarter, more capable, yes. For now? Well, shit is about to get real. One moment, he was out, wandering through the willows, searching for something his mama called mushrooms. He wasn't sure why she needed it, but she said she did so he offered to help. The next, everything goes dark. Eyes cloud over, his brain shuts down. His body moves quickly, running as fast as he can until his paws grab ahold of the rabbit's back legs, pulling it closer to him. His memory lapses the entire event until he stands, ragged breath, blood dripping from his lips. A dark pool of liquid begins to slowly spread out around him as the poor unsuspecting rabbit gurgles, fighting for both its life and death. Why would the pup not end its misery? He blinks, finally coming to as he looks down at the hare. A puncture wound at the base of its neck bubbles with blood as one of his paws keeps the rabbit's legs pinned firmly to the ground. Suddenly, a wave of emotion washes over him. Not of empathy or sympathy, but sadness. A sadness that he can't explain. He hadn't meant to harm the rabbit. No, he wasn't mean like that... What had he done? "No, no, no," his monotone voice is quick, the simple words spit out as he looks around frantically. "I didn't mean to hurt you, little one," Gourami whispers, his eyes widening as his brain tries to figure out what to do. "Sh, sh, you don't need to talk," lowering his muzzle closer to the dying rabbit, he uses his other paw to smooth over the rabbit's bloodstained fur. "I'll help, I promise," the pup inhales a deep breath, "just don't move, okay?" he places his nose to the rabbit's forehead before lifting his weight off of the rabbit as it continues to fight for its life. He knew he had to be quick or the rabbit would surely die. Now, what was it again that he had to do? The rabbit was bleeding out through the puncture would on its next. The blood wasn't squirting everywhere so it wasn't from an artery, that was a good sign! But take too long and the rabbit would drown in its own blood. Put pressure on it, create a bandage, get it all tidied up, yes. He could do that! Moving a few feet away, he has to hop every so often to look over the tall grasses that surround him. Walking closer to the water's edge, he spots the exact thing he needed. Horsetail! It would be good to have some water too, but moving the rabbit would ensure its death. Growling under his breath, Gourami looks to see if there's anything he can use for carrying water. Of course, nothing. Fine, the horsetail would have to do. Grabbing a few stalks of the horsetail, another idea hits him. They were surrounded by willow trees! He could use the bark as well! Hurrying, Gourami rushes over to the closest tree and uses his blood-stained teeth to strip a thin piece of bark from the tree. Picking his horsetail back up, he goes back over to the rabbit to assess the situation. The rabbit is on its last few breaths. "Oh, sweet thing, hang in there one more minute," Gourami murmurs, his face still unchanged by emotion as he works quickly. Chewing up the horsetail until its mush in his mouth, he spits it out with a wrinkle of his lip. Yuck. Placing the chewed up mush onto the rabbit's open wound, he presses it for a few seconds until the blood begins to slow. His eyes look around and notice just how much blood is staining both the ground and the rabbit. Hm, too much, but there was still hope. He could see it in the rabbit's eyes. Next, he awkwardly uses his paws and ankles to hold onto the bark and strip the inner white pieces of the bark from the hard exterior. This would be the piece he needs. Though the piece looks ragged, its large enough for the rabbit that lays there, struggling to stay alive. Gently placing the piece of white willow bark over the mush on the rabbit's wound, Gourami continues to hold pressure. One might wonder where he had learned all this medical stuff from and honestly, he wouldn't tell you even if you asked. His secrets were his to keep. Got it? Finally, the blood stops, but the rabbit is still gasping for breath. Its sides move in and out in shallow breaths, mouth open and eyes beginning to fade. Gourami lowers himself to lay over top of the rabbit, both front paws applying pressure to the wound as he hovers his muzzle over the rabbit's face. "Now, now, sweet thing, it wouldn't be good if you go and die on me, now would it?" A glint of something malicious twinkles in his candy apple green eyes as he watches the life slowly fade from the rabbit. Ah, too bad. Tsk, tsk, the sound comes from him as he leans close enough to lick the rabbit's cheek. "At least you'll make a nice pelt to sleep on," Gourami whispers before standing up and grabbing the rabbit by the neck and taking it back home to have his uncle help him skin the rabbit. |
