Mornings were always the canine’s favorite time of day, thou the night was very close behind it. When the brilliant warm sun rose over the rigid horizon to brighten and warm the once cool and dark night, bring life to the world. However, the winter has hidden these delights with a thick layer of heavy snow holding grey clouds. The good news was that this place was too warm and dry for them to release the white fluffy stuff here. Yes, there was a chill in the air but nothing like back home.

The ebony headed lupus was deep within his own thoughts, not really paying much attention to where he was heading or which way to go was the right one. Shoulder blades and hips rose and fell with each long elegant stride the creature took, paw pads pressed into the soft earth below his athletic frame. His movements were graceful, strides smooth as ice, toned muscle flexed with ease as the large creature almost appeared to be floating along with the gentle sway of the dried grass in the cool breeze of winter. His bi colored nostrils flared intensely as he took in the mixture of the grass and the dry air that mingled in his nose, warm digits flickered over the wide open space before him. Curiosity made the male ventured further and further into the unfamiliar territory he stumbled upon, no place to call home and no family to hold him back from his travels. Mav was a free wolf.

Surreal Adravendi

She needed to talk to her younger son. Enough time had transpired since the siege, and the event afterward. He’d been sparse, lately. A huff of a sigh sent twin plumes of mist into the winter chilled air. Frost lay heavy on the ground, clinging to the bent, dead stalks of plainsland grasses. Snow wouldn’t be far off.

Surreal gave a sigh, lowering her head, eyes flicking down to survey the tracks of various creatures, pausing as she noticed the wolf prints. They carried a scent that was both foreign and familiar. It took her a beat to place the scent to a name, and to a face. Mav, wasn’t it? The thought had barely faded before she was off at a lope. This time over things were different. She had no underyearling children hidden away, needing protection from unknown wolves. Her mate was back, though blind. And the threat of Arcanum was gone.

She came within sight of the male, slowing as she circled around to approach from the front of him. It was the same scarred wolf, alright. Her mismatched blue and gold eyes swept over his frame as she stopped, ears and tail raised, head lifted to better observe him. “Good day. It’s been a while.” Her uniquely accented voice was calm, conversational, even slightly friendly. She had no reason to drive him off - yet.

The fairly large sized creature trotted across the field in a steady pace, long elegant stride made him feel as if he was flying across the land with the sway of the dried grass. His muscular shoulder blades and hips raised and fell with each step he took, ear twitched to the sound of another creature coming closer to him. At first, the scarred beast paid no mind to someone, possibly another wolf, hot on his trails. As far as he could sense, the ebony headed canine has not trespassed on any pack land or done anything wrong. Even then, Mav could surely out run them if he felt like a fight was unneeded. Perhaps it was just another wolf, just looking for someone to run with. He remembers the odd phenomena happening before, similar to when a pack did a run together. But this was a small group of lone wolves, wanting to run as a pack without being an actually pack.

However, the battle worn lupus pace slowed when a familiar but unfamiliar scent tickled his nose and the sight of a she wolf blocked his path. Maverick came to a nimble halt, an impish smirk played along his lips and a devilish spark in his eyes. The canine remembered her, a she wolf worth fighting for. Thou, it appears she has new stories marked on her delicate frame. Of course, he held his stance. If she knew him well enough, it was typical of the male. Scarred head held high with confidence, his chest out with pride, his tail raised to the point of curl, ears erected, and his warm orange digits directly on her but gentle. Although Mavi’s stance was not dominate or threatening, just a very self-assured lone male in the presence of a lone she wolf.

His tone was husky, low, but soft to the ear. Masculine, but not overpowering her like his father’s blood burned in him to do. “I would say it has.” Although their acquaintance was brief the last time he saw her, she offered him food when he needed it most. Being a lone wolf without any kind of family or friends to help you, was not the easiest. And even though many loner’s have offered him food before in his time, a lone mother’s offer was somehow different from the rest. “How have you been Surreal? I hope you and your family are doing well. I assume you have finally have taken your place as Queen and your mate as your King.”

So he remembered her as well. The silver and black marked timber smiled lightly at his answer, haunches settling upon the frozen ground as he spoke further, asking how she had been and offering his hopes. What could she say? The time that had transpired between the first meeting and the next had been full of highs and lows, but she was on the other side, her family back in one piece with Faite's return, Falk's return, and her children grown enough to make their own decisions in life. The Plains were free of both Arcanum and now Hellstrom, and she was almopst ready to claim them.

"I've been well enough. My children are all older than a year now, so I can really focus on setting up my pack. And... No. My mate will not be the King. He was blinded a while back, and would be unable to fight for the pack in a challenge if I were unable to..." The regret in her voice was audible. She knew Falk might be slightly upset at learning this, at first, but in the long run, he would understand. After all, he would have the place of Consort; and no other wolf would hold that place.

Her head was still held high, though in a relaxed manner as she regarded him, taking in his frame and wondering if he'd been doing a better job of feeding himself since that frosty morning. "And how have you been keeping yourself?"

King and Queen. It sound strange coming out of his muzzle, being a canine that loved his freedom. It has been so long since he had been in an actually pack. In fact, the last pack he was in was his families pack back home. Yes, Mav did join small packs. But these were only temporarily, mostly to earn food or because he was mated with one of their females. And as each day went by and the more the male thought about it, it appealed to him more and more than Mavi ever thought it would. Sooner or later, Maverick will find his own Queen and they can have a family to call a pack. Someday…..

The battled worn canine listened to her, warm digits never left her familiar duel colored gaze. Maverick’s expression softened as Surreal gave him a brief update of her life, but a little light inside him ignited at the sound of her mate being blinded. No, not because he hated the wolf. Mav has never met him before and he was sure if her mate ever did met Mav, the wolf would surely be chased off like ninety percent of mated males do when they see him was around their mate. The canine knew she had a mate and children, but something in him liked her. There was something that made him like her more than just a passing by she wolf. Not like a crush or, but more than a friend. Admire, maybe… Werid…

“I see,” the ebony headed lupus replied, his husky tone lightened and once erected ripped ears turned back slightly, “Well… I am sorry to hear your mate had been blinded. I am sure it was for a worthy cause. But, your children must be proud of him as well as you. If this fight was so bad, he was lucky to only be blinded for life.” It was true.Mavi had been in his fair share of fights, almost being blinded himself. Twice. The proof was in his scars that marked his face. In fact, he has almost lost his life to a few fights. Although he was unable to feel any pain and proved to be an advantage, it was also very dangerous. Maverick was still trying to find a balance with this defect he had, having a hard time knowing when to quit.

The young male tried to let a smile take over his expression, but a frown was hard to replace. Even when Surreal questions him about his own health, Maverick shrugged it off casually like it was the lease of his many concerns. “You know… The normal… Same old Maverick the loner….” A hearty chuckle rumbled his chest, but it came out more dysfunctional and broken than he planned.  With a moment to think to himself, the lupus let a warm grin spread across his expression. “Where are you heading now? Are you going back to your family or just roaming around?”

Maverick's condolences were met with a sigh. His assurance that the fight must have been worthy brought a shake of her head. "I'm afraid it was no great battle that he fell in. When you first happened upon myself and my group, Falk was absent because he had hared off to the field, despite my assurances that his sister had a mate to fight for her freedom from Arcanum and that he had children who needed their father there with them. He got captured, and our children were just old enough to ask 'Where is Papa?'. He was imprisoned for a long while. It was no fight for his freedom that I know of that blinded him. According to him, his captor was setting him free, and the bitch queen of Arcanum traipsed in and maimed him, then sent him staggering on his way." She flexed her claws, raking them against the frozen ground.

She forced her mind away from the subject, making a clear gesture that she wished to speak no more of the subject, and as he answered her inquiry of his health, his answer seemed almost half hearted. Mismatched gold and blue gaze studied him for a moment, before she answered his question. "I am already home. These lands are to be mine soon enough. My family is here in the Plains. As well as one or two who wish to be a part of Celestial once I raise it."

Her gaze sharpened on his face, head cocking slightly as she asked, "Are you looking for a home?"

The wolf made no comment to the she wolf’s explanation of how her mate had disappeared, only to return to her blind. It was clearly a touchy subject that Maverick has unknowing provoked. Even as she spoke, the lupus tried to picture losing his sense of sight. The canine could not imagine being unable to see your mate, the love of your life in which you want to spend every moon and every sun with. Unable to see your very own children, the blood and fur that you and your mate had created together. Not to mention, everything else the world had to offer. The very thought sent chills down his spine and a twinge of ache through his core. Maverick could not live with himself if that happened to him. Not able to provide for his family. It almost made him feel sick to his stomach just thinking about it.

He remained silent for a while. Although his expression did softened, he did not reveal pity or looked down upon her as if she was a broken soul. In fact, he held his same expression as he was before he found out about this information. Even as her sturdy mismatched gaze met his when he gave his half ass excuse about his health, the battle worn canine let an impish playful grim tug the edges of his ebony lips. It was true. Mav has been a loner for over two years now. Not much has changed, even the last time they met. Food and shelter were always an issue, but the canine always found a way to make ends meet. Whether it was to fight for it, steal for it, or, on several occasions, ‘sleep’ with someone. The male had many tactics, not all of them made him proud of himself though.

That the mention of home however, snap Mavi out of his daze. Warm deep citrine colored digits held her curious gaze, truly catching him off guard by her question. “Uhhhhhh…." the man emitted, intelligently, unsure how to respond. Home sounded so… weird to his ears. To him, home was back with his mother’s group of loners who, in truth, did not treat him ideal. He really never thought about home besides maybe his future pack, if even that. But to join Surreal’s up and coming pack, never crossed his mind. Cons and pros swiftly ran through his thoughts as a wintry gust roar over the plains and ruffled his coat.

Realizing he had not responded to her yet, the ebony headed creature gave off a chuckle. But again, the chuckle came out more dysfunctional than he meant it to be. “I've never really thought about it,” Maverick replied gingerly, not accepting or denying her clear offer to join her up and coming pack, but instead, played dumb as if he never caught onto her offer, “I don’t take orders very well and being under someone else sounds a little out of my realm… if you catch my drift.” Mav did not really deny her offer, but he did not accept it either. The loner had a hard time with authority and he like Surreal. But, the lupus knew his warm welcome would be short lived as soon as he stepped on someone’s paws whether he did it intentionally or by accident. He would rather have Surreal on his good side than bad. But maybe, the she wolf could convince him with sweet words and a good offer. Maybe…
