On an otherwise quiet morning, a screech echoed across the grassland, slowly moving closer and closer. It sounded a little something like this: Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaadddyyy!!!"
As the voice drew closer and closer it became easier to distinguish a small, colorful form booking it through the grass, legs a blur. As they came closer it also became more obvious why - behind the small form came a larger, much more angry form. Just as dark as her, without her chaotic color, and much, much, much larger. Her screech was echoed by a bellowing roar.
To be honest it really kind of a little bit maybe was kind of a little her fault. But how was she supposed to know that the roly poly fat pup trespasser with the weird face and paws and no tail that she'd tried to chase off had a momma nearby? Or that she'd be angry when Leto tried to bite the ugly pup's nose?
The ugly giant dog things were, unbeknownst to Leto, black bears. Generally fairly docile compared to grizzlies, they were certainly easier to chase off... if you weren't a pup. Unfortunately for her, Leto wasn't any larger than the bear's cub, and the bear was not impressed.
Mithras was starting to get used to the subtle variations in his daughters shrieks. The same word could be yowled a hundred different ways and they all meant something different, believe it or not! He was baffled by this, but he supposed that was just part of the joy of parenting. This particular variation of "Daddy" coming from Leto probably didn't mean anything good. He heaved himself to his feet and set off towards her call at a brisk lope, (one could only run to so many false alarms before they tapped the brakes every once in a while.) What he found was his oldest daughter facing off with something much larger and toothier than her.
Luckily for her, he was quite a bit larger than it. Of course, he knew a bear was nothing to scoff at but to be fair neither was he. It was a female, and being the smaller of the two sexes he stood taller than her. He let a loud snarl rip out of his throat as he bounded towards the clearing. He knew black bears were essentially cowards and most would run off if you could convince them you were tougher, so he charged. The cub was already behind her, so while she was definitely pissed he hoped he'd be able to get her to turn. "Get behind me, Leto, go on!" he yelled out, worried she'd get caught up in the fray. Then all this work would have been for nothing!
