My sweet summer is gone

He had never been in a place that so oppositely reflected his mood. He sat on his haunches under the canopy of one of the trees and looked out around him at the plant life that surrounded him. The sky was cloudy today, but here and there the sun would break through and shine down on the lives, intensifying the bright green hues. Everything around him was so calm and peaceful. It was almost infuriating. He had been so wrapped in hurt and sorrow for so long now that he was beginning to feel numb. He wasn't sure which was worse. He got to his paws again with a shake of his fur, stepping out into a clearing to stand in a patch of sunlight. He lifted his head toward the light for a moment, closing his eyes with a sigh to try and pull some ounce of joy from the one thing that used to always recharge him and pull him up. Now though it only felt like salt in the wound. He grit his teeth and turned away from it, walking toward the trunk of a large tree and settling under it, shifting to lay down on his stomach and lay his head on his mismatched paws. He looked across the ground in front of him, not focused on anything in particular. |
