He gasped

His paws swung and wheeled through the sea, fighting to hit solid ground as his head bobbed over the surface of the waves. He could hear the cry of gulls and the roar of waves crashing against solid ground, but as he paddled through the brine he couldn’t see anything. The tips of his claws caught on something and for a glorious moment he thought the worst of it was over, only for it to be ripped out from under him as his helpless body was lifted and tumbled under the water. Water stung his nostrils and the back of his throat burned, he couldn’t see, couldn’t open his eyes without burning them and could only flail helplessly as the ocean swallowed him whole. And then suddenly, it stopped.

When he could finally open his eyes again, all he could see was grainy blackness. His lungs heaved coughs and his stomach lurched out what very well could have been half the ocean. He gasped for air as shivers rattled his bones, slowly he urged his paws to move forward and found his body sliding against the pitch-black shore. Black sand. Curious. He thought to himself, crawling his way away from the hungry sea as he urged strength to return to his legs. He needed to find someone, someone who could tell him where he was, hopefully someone with a nice warm den he could curl up in and take the cold away from the tips of his toes.

He climbed halfway up the beach before he gave a hoarse and quiet howl. He yelped in frustration and drew in a deep breath before trying again, letting out what was more of a low pitched wail instead of a howl.

“Please help me!”
