The basin seems to stretch on forever, and it leaves Fortune feeling strange. Feeling wonderful, feeling like anything is open within the realm of possibility. Anything can be done. Anything and everything. She is strong, a heart throbbing in her chest that can't be matched. She is a finely tuned hunter, senses ever so useful when it comes to being... her. Fortune is lovely. Everything is lovely. Strong and quick, curious, bold. Bold and brash.

Bold. Long steps and a hot head, she was fast. Athletic and fast on the trail of something... prey like. There was big game out here, and there was something she could bring down and bring home. Fortune was more than ready, more than happy with that. Wild. A glint in her eye and a search for something. Something bigger, better, greater.

A quick step and a brilliant mind, head high, the summer sun gentle on her coat, Fortune is searching for something else.

Kai was hungry. Super hungry, actually. While he had gotten adept at catching small rodents, he was starting to crave a larger meal. He wasn't quite sure what he could take down by himself, and going for larger prey on his own seemed too foolish even for him without being certain what he could handle. For now he had decided on exploring more of these lands, until he found something suitable to eat. If he didn't, maybe he'd try to meet up with his father again soon.

The scent of prey, though, arrested him from his thoughts as soon as it reached his nose. His pace quickened as he made his descent into the basin he'd been examining, watching the thick grasses ripple in the gentle breeze, swaying like the waves of the ocean. He was grateful that the sun was not fully overhead yet; though the day was warm, it would surely get worse and he would have to find shelter later, when the sun was at its peak.

The sight of another made him pace, a carefree smile appearing on his features. The woman was considerably smaller than him, though clearly older. His posture was relaxed, his smile friendly as he closed the distance between them, eyes burning with curiosity. "Hello there!" Kai called out, tail waving freely behind him.

She's usually out scouting prey. Large, large prey she could bring the pack out to trail. Tracking things, watching them as they came and went. Fortune isn't really sure what she's going to find out here. This region had been her home, sure, but it was different. A new home and a new perspective, and she was more than happy to scope it out. What counts, what matters... it seems that all Fortune does these days is put in the leg work, but she's pleased with that. She's pleased with herself in that respect.

There is a child, a large child, approaching in her periphery. Fortune's head quirks softly to the side, tail wagging. She really and honestly does enjoy working with the fledglings. They were so lovely, and they had so much they needed to know to be confident, competent adults. It was everyone's job to raise them. Children are important, children and family above all.

"Oh hello!" Her tail wags, smiling softly as the child nears. "How are you?" She'd speak to them as she would anyone else, if more friendly. Fortune closes the remainder of the gap, a friendly space. No use in shouting, of course. The day is comfortable around her shoulders, and the brave is more than happy to share it.

Kai Jarvela's demeanor brightened significantly when she didn't seem displeased at his approach. He wore a toothy grin, accompanied by a gentle wagging of his tail to show he was friendly. Slowly he would approach, pleased at the feeling of the long grasses tickling his paws and his underbelly. He enjoyed the shift in the seasons; the world was full of life now beyond anything he'd seen before, and he found himself constantly marveling at the sights all around him. The universe seemed to grow each day, and even more rapidly as he spent time on his own, away from his father -- and he wasn't complaining in the slightest.

"I'm good!" He quipped back happily, beaming at her. "I'm Kai, by the way." Introducing himself seemed the easiest, and most polite way to start a conversation with someone and he has happy to follow in the conventions he'd been taught, to possibly make a new friend.. or even just someone to talk to for a brief time. He was equally as happy with either outcome. "I was sorta hoping I might find something to eat here. Looks like somewhere I'd live if I was food. What do you think?" He let out a low chuckle as he gazed at her, wondering if she might join him on a hunt.

The world was a wide, large place. Fortune had seen some of it, more of it than those that had spent their entire lives here. This... this place was safe. It was safe, and she was okay. She would be okay, and she would keep all the things around herself safe as well. Her family. Family was the most important thing. Blood is thicker, right? She's certain that she can lean on her family above all.

"Fortune Adravendi, nice to meet you Kai." The brave is gentle, regarding the young man with a soft nod. Tail wagging, friendly, kind. She is open, as she often is with children. Always with children. Fortune loves children above all.

"Here, come look at these tracks," She grins as the child speaks, moving to a soft spot where the grass has been matted. Quills scattered on the ground, leaving the telltale signs of the creature that had had only recently vacated the premises. Porcupines would sometimes visit the scrubby areas, those like the basin. "What do you think left them?" Fortune was asking to see if he knew, happy to take the young man hunting.

Immediately he could tell that she was a kind woman, and her company pleased him. He could find no hint of malice in her stare, and he returned the joyful expression earnestly. He was grateful that he'd been allowed to freedom to travel as he liked, and he was interested in meeting as many wolves as possible -- he would take hold of every opportunity presented to him.  "Nice to meet you, too," the boy replied, beaming wider now. She had the scent of a pack on her, and he wondered briefly what sort of place she lived in. He had memories of Abaven, of his mother, though they hadn't stayed there long. He hoped his mother was doing well, and briefly wondered if he should visit her eventually. Though he knew her place in his life wouldn't be a constant, visits never hurt, right?

His thoughts returned back to the present moment quite quickly. She instructed him to look at some tracks, and gladly he padded toward her, nose nearly pressed to the ground as he caught hold of the animal's scent. It wasn't anything he had seen before. The tracks left were small, but the quills were odd and he studied them for a long moment, perplexed.  "I.. really don't know," he admitted warily, peering at her curiously.  "I'm a bit new to this area," Kai explained after a moment, head lifting, hoping she didn't blame him for his lack of knowledge.

She's always been good with children, at least... for as long as she can remember. In Celestial, she'd done well with the young ones. She'd shown them the ropes, taught them how to track. Tracking, you see, is the least dangerous of hunting activities in Fortune's mind. The brave wouldn't want to go around breaking other people's children. That was probably a bad idea, after all. Wouldn't want to put her mouth (nose?) anywhere it didn't belong. Right. Her attention remains on Kai, nodding at the child softly.

"That's quite alright, here, take a look at these." Fortune picks up one of the shed quills carefully. "We have a creature called the porcupine, they're covered in these spines. They hurt to be poked with, but they're slow and clumsy. Easy to catch, but hard to kill." Fortune nods softly, pointing out the tracks in the soft ground, leading off toward a more wooded area. "In order to eat them, you need to roll them on their backs and get to the area that's soft. Easy pickings if you know what to do" She grins softly, looking to the child. "Would you like to track one down with me?" They weren't fast, and this trail wasn't old. Fortune figured they should be able to find this one fairly easily.

Kai couldn't help but feel a bit bad that he hadn't been able to tell what sort of animal was, but he knew he was young and he couldn't know everything. Being blissfully ignorant, but simply not knowing everything was another. Kai was not so naive to think he knew much at all - there was so much of the world he had yet to explore, and so many wolves he hoped to meet someday.

He nodded at her words, happy to take whatever lesson she wanted to impart on him. The boy watched as she carefully lifted one of the quills, and he narrowed his eyes as he examined it. If these creatures were covered in those spines, that would definitely hurt to try to take down. But she explained you have to get them on their backs first before finishing them off. All he could picture was those quills sticking in his snout, and he cringed. "Super weird, but okay!" Kai beamed gladly, tail wagging. "I'd love to join you." Hoping she would lead the way, he let his head fall back to the ground to grab on to the scent that he'd already caught and hopefully trail after it.
