It was noon, and high time he got out of the barn to search for some food. His uncle hadn't come back yet and his mom wasn't in any hurry to get them food, so the boy set out to get his own lunch. He checked around to make sure nobody was around to surprise attack him, and once satisfied that he was escaping alone, he bounded out into the nearby field. There were birds there, and from his observation they didn't seem to fly. They had little fuzzballs around their feet, chirping and running around as they occasionally pecked at the ground. He sat and watched them for a minute, debating creeping closer to see if he could catch one or two.

Wyrm had been holding up in the moldy barn for far too long, taking refuge in the shade that it provided for his darker coat. He hated the sun, but he loved his brother- so as Drake set out that morning, Wyrm followed in the echo of him on his trail.

His stride was still clumsy, his paws and head growing far faster than the rest of him and the block headed little pup still had trouble adjusting to the weight. His clumsy paws tripped over branches, broken parts of the fence they had to go through, and even their own selves.

As Drake neared the chickens, the gentle clucking that caught Wyrm’s massive ears made him paws. Inkwell eyes read the stories left on the grass and soil, and he followed the chicken feet tracks left there until he noticed the feather bodies of the whole family.

Was he a natural hunter, did his black coat bless him with some kind of natural stealth to help him blend in the darkness and sneak up on his prey undetected?

No.

A mischievous grin split his muzzle, white teeth breaching the dark shroud of his visage. Black tongue lolled out, breaking free of its prison as the hooligan suddenly barrelled forth, straight for the chickens. There was nothing tactful about this decision-making going on within the boy’s head, he just wanted to EAT.

The chickens began clucking near immediately, the hens extending their wings and running with little chicks trying their best to follow quickly. Luckily for the brothers, they seemed slow as hell.

Drake had crouched down on the ground, lying on his stomach as he thought about trying to hunt down these flightless nuggets. He didn't have to think long, however, as his midnight brother suddenly burst forward and started chasing them. As if on instinct, the dual toned boy rose to his feet in a flash and joined, tail wagging a mile a minute as he followed suit. His tongue hung out of his mouth, eyes wild with delight and laughter bubbling from his lips as little paws pounded the earth. Luckily for him and his brother, the chickens didn't seem to be very fast, so surely they could catch one or two easy, right?

He decided to chase after a fat old hen, her little yellow fuzzballs chasing after her as they tried to keep up. He altered his course, nearly bumping shoulders with his brother as he suddenly barreled past. He glanced behind him briefly, "C'mon slowpoke! They gunna get away!" He called behind him. He turned his attention back to his hunt, determined to catch one of these hens. Paws pounded against the ground as he gave chase, the birds scattering every which way. They flapped their wings in a panic, some even going as far as racing across his path and beating him with their wings as they did so. Teeth snapped at the air, but each time he was too slow and ended up missing any hold he could have gotten by mere inches. He glanced towards his brother as he watched him chase the birds as well, but Drake was confident that he would be able to catch one of these before his brother!

When he returned his attention back to the hen he had been chasing, he skidded to a halt as he realized she had disappeared with her chicks in all the confusion. But nearby, the scattering hens were slowing down, so he altered his course again and put on a burst of speed. Long legs carried him faster and faster until once again, he sent the chickens scattering in every direction. A couple of them attempted to fly past his head, and that's when he took his chance! He abruptly dug his heels into the dirt as he twisted his body to follow the hen, jaws opening for a split second as they snapped on the hens foot. With his sudden movement and momentum, the boy fell ungracefully on his pack, and when he scrambled to his feet, he had won his prize! The hen protested and beat his face with her wings, but it didn't deter him. Quickly, he flopped on top of the chicken to hold her down right before grasping her whole little head in his mouth. With a quick shake, he felt the hens neck snap and she fell limp. He had done it! He won!

He stood victoriously with the hen dangling from his mouth, but was surprised when a rather angry looking rooster suddenly burst from the barn and straight for him! Yelping with surprise, Drake dropped his prize tried to flee. And just as he turned around, the rooster took a flying leap at him. He cried out in surprise, ears pinned back and tail tucked down as the roosters wings beat against his hind end, its talons gripping onto his back. "Wha! I was jus' playin'!" He cried out, but the rooster didn't care. It continued its onslaught as he raced around the field, trying to get away from the maddened bird to no avail. "Wha! Heeelllppp meeee!" He cried out for his brother, but his brother seemed to be busy with his own hunting to help him. Tucking his tail, Drake decided he'd have to take matters into his own paws to save himself.

Drake frantically searched for something he could put between him and the rooster so he could better figure out a course of action, he spotted the tractor and decided that would be his best bet. He clumsily turned himself around, ducking his head to avoid the onslaught from the rooster as he made a mad dash towards the contraption. Once he got close enough, he barreled beneath it and was at last safe from his attacker for a time. The rooster stopped his onslaught for a moment, halting its efforts as the boy hid beneath the machine. Panting, Drake decided it was now or never! When he saw the rooster coming around again, he took his chance and darted out from the tractor with jaws open and made as fierce of a snarl as he could. He lunged towards it, briefly startling the bird as he retaliated. Drake managed to catch its breast with his teeth, taking more beatings and peckings for a few moments. He narrowed his eyes and flattened his ears and started to shake his head as much as he could. Before he knew it, the roosters head beat against the metal machine and died.

Tired and bruised, Drake dropped it and stood triumphantly over its body. He felt fierce! Accomplished! Like nothing could stop him after this! He had won!
