Spring was moving lethargically across eastern Auster and the morning broke cloudy and cool. Ashiel could see the haze of the sun out across the sea, wreathed in dusky blue clouds. Sunrises were one thing he missed when it came to living in the canyon. Normally he would not see the sun til late morning and so he'd climbed up to the eastern watchpoint at the canyon rim to recharge and watch the morning break.

Unbidden his thoughts drifted back to Lydia. She'd taken him up to the rim a few times in just such a manner. He didn't really appreciate it when he was small but he sure did now… and in his heart there was a soft, dull ache as he wondered where Lydia was now. He'd never really gotten the chance to say goodbye. Yes, yes, he knew she was a mortal! But, she'd practically raised him. Heck, she'd been around more than Pyralis had. Ashiel didn't deny that Lydia was soft, foolish and ridiculous. Not strong, mighty and fearless like his mother but there was something about that chapter of his life that felt unfinished. He sighed as the sun continued to struggle to break through the clouds.
