They had not travelled far from the willows, well in this area the willows weren't as plentiful as the main kingdom was. There were a few of the drooping trees here and there but that was it. Just the soft dew-soaked grass for their paws to tread on. A cyan gaze would look back to the other wolf, not far behind. Dusk would let Winter hunt wherever he chose and he hoped the white fellow would at least bring home some sort of prey. Of course he could hunt! Why did he even come if he couldn't hunt? To scare away birds?

Ears would listen carefully to the sounds of nature. The trees would rustle in the wind, but that was all he could hear. He waited for the scuttling sound of tiny paws or the scent of mud. Eyes would scan for a white or brown creature hiding within the tall grass. With his long stay in the willows with Esti, his scent now matched the protecting trees. If any creature was here, it wouldn't be able to smell the hunter until his teeth had sunken into its neck.

He kept his maw shut. Just silence. Alert eyes would flicker as his nose took in the familiar tree scent. Nothing. But nothing is always something. And there had to be plentiful prey here. It was spring, the forests were usually bustling with prey. But a key to hunting was patience and soon he would find a plump creature dangling from his jaws.

Being stealthy, quiet, and invisible was Winter's expertise. He mastered the art of hiding; however, his hunting skill were simply passable. This was probably obvious from his near skeleton frame. Typically he was a scavenger, but he wanted to seem all the more worthy to these wolves. He wanted to be worshiped.

It was dawn and minuscule droplets of water slept peacefully on the blades of grass they tread on. Each drop of dew mirrored the land around them while the twinkled softly due to the dawning sun. Colors of pink and blue painted the sky in a wondrous pattern. Beams of newborn light passed through the towering trees. It was beautiful.

Winter took in a breath of air, savoring the scent around them. The smell of rabbits were plentiful; however, he wanted something greater. Ah, the perfume of an elk struck his senses as if it were lightning. Yes, that would be perfect. The smell was fresh so that had to mean the creature was close. Winter stared at the grasses before him, following the places in which have been pressed down by a much larger animal. He relied on these trails and the elk's scent to lead him to it's location.

He spoke not a word for he trusted Dusk scented it to and would hopefully follow him. Any sound could spook the creature away. Winter continued the trail until the elk came in sight. It was standing in an opening on a hill on the border of the willows; however, there was an issue with this game. The elk appeared to have a fawn at its side - a babe. Ah, it just made this hunt all the more interesting. Two kills in one if done successfully; however, it made it much more dangerous for them both. For a mother would not flee, she would attack.

Rabbit. That scent clung to every blade of grass. Dusk was going to settle himself down on the small brown creatures, until Winter took his paws somewhere else. The ivory man's eyes had found something and it was not long till the overpowering scent filled Dusk's nose.

Elk.

In silence he would follow Winter as well as the scent trail. His mouth watered as he halted beside Winter, disguising his black pelt amongst the trees and bushes. Although he did smell an elk, another scent came to him. Milk. This elk was a mother, with a child. Dusk's mouth only watered more. What was a defenseless deer with her weak child doing out here in the open? He thought carefully through those words. Defenseless? This elk was a mother, as any mother, she would protect her child from hungry savages like themselves. This could be risky. This could be dangerous.

There were two wolves and two deers. Two wolves the same height and strength, yet one deer weak and small with another larger and more dominant. How could this work? Winter had the same idea as him to feast on such a prize, but such prizes do not die in front of them. This would require effort, stealth, and all the rest. This wasn't gonna be easy.

A plan. That's what they needed. Just run and hope for the best? No. Way too risky. Perhaps have one wolf go for one deer, no, the mother is surely stronger, more than a wolf to handle. But then, he had the perfect idea. Hungry yet wise eyes lit up in the shadows.
"I have a plan. We aim for the mother, surprising her. If we pull her down, pinning her to the ground, she'll have no chance of escape." He whispered to his fellow hunter. The escape part worried him. They had to do this right. Better than perfect. If they miss and that deer bolts in a run, they'll only have a hell of a run...and the fawn if they're lucky. "Once we have her out of the way, we'll finish off the weak child."

The fawn was too young to fight and as he calculated, the fawn should stay in the exact spot until they finish off its mother. Or perhaps run and stumble in fear not far away. The child wasn't much of a problem, the deer was the main prize. The fawn would probably die anyway without its mother in the wild.

He would give time for Winter to react. Perhaps he had a better plan. He just prayed the deer wouldn't go anywhere.

Just a few more moments. Just keep grazing until your tender flesh is in our bellies.

Dusk had followed him to the perfume that emitted from the two elks. Winter was thrilled for it would have been difficult if had to attempt the kills alone, and he would have. Though, it would probably result in him being injured and an unsuccessful kill. But he could do better than rabbits. The hares would barely satisfy himself alone. No, he had to impress his kingdom.

Winter listened to Dusk's plan. Yes, the babe would not leave the mother's side. After all, the fawn appeared to be only hours old. The poor thing was trembling viciously as it suckled from its mother's warmth.

So, lead hunter. . . You get the killing blow. I will distract her and keep her attention on me. She won't flee with her baby at her side. When she's striking at me with her antlers, go for the kill. Should be pretty easy, I would think. The fawn won't be of any trouble. It can barely stand.

Winter darted out toward the mother - no need to sneak. No way should would run with her helpless child's life at stake. He barked at the mother making sure her eyes lied upon him. The creature fought him with her antlers, swiping them in his direction. One swipe with her antlers landed successfully on his left forelimb - Winter yelped in pain; however, he continued with their hunt. No way could he back down now without risking even more serious injuries. With now a limp, he continued to dance with the elk so that Dusk could finish her off and then afterwards, the babe.

Winter had decided to go along with the plan. Excellent. Winter had taken the role of distraction, leaving Dusk to pin the deer. It all sounded so wonderful, yet Dusk hoped Winter would act well and not get himself foolishly injured.

It had already begun. The ivory brute had approached the mother, baring his fangs in a bark. Whilst the man was doing his part quite well, the coal hunter slipped around beside the bushes, aiming to leap on the mother from the side. Antlers and paws battled for a moment longer, the deer successfully scarring Winter's left forelimb. But that wasn't going to stop the powerful white wolf.

On his haunches he rested, making sure no more injuries would befall his hunting-mate. A new energy surged through him as the large brute leaped, his legs outstretched, teeth and claws bared. A shrilling roar escaped his open jaw, his heart-rate and adrenaline rising quickly. The deer could only face her attacker, though the brute had caught her off guard. With powerful force, the man knocked the stumbling deer onto her side. She would have taken some damage from the fall, though his weight was on top of her, claws sinking into the delicate brown flesh. Blood oozed and the deer was too petrified to even move. Though simple scars were not enough. In a split second, teeth would fasten around the mother's neck. They sunk in instantly, followed by a bellowing crunch. It was the killing bite, the end of any hunter's hunt. The terrified glow faded away from the mother's eyes, turning lifeless as her soul was ripped away by the savages.

He would leave Winter to take down the weak little one, which surprisingly was still here, trembling. Winter should at least have the chance to sink his fangs into something. Though his eyes would not stray from the nasty looking scar. He hoped Titania knew how to fix that up, he feared it may lead to an infection.

The two prizes were caught. One large, one big. No more rabbits for them, until these carcasses were gobbled away. Teamwork and cooperation was what made them to this, and Dusk would thank Winter.
"Your skills were remarkable, you did an excellent job. Thank you."

They might have some trouble bringing the two bodies back to the willows, but oh well. It was done. All done and dusted. Yes, he was covered in dust.

A rush of adrenaline kept his leg from hurting unbearable as they executed their plan. Winter watched as the murderer overcame Dusk as he attacked the mother. Winter swiftly grabbed the babe as soon as he saw his friend had the elk down. The fawn was trembling and screaming for help - though, it would do no good. Winter latched his jaws around its throat and savored the trembling of his last bray and his struggling heartbeat. Ah, the heart struggled so fiercely against Winter. Beating rapidly, mirroring a bird's tiny heart, as it tried with all of its energy to keep the fawn alive. Soon, though, the heart died and so did the fawn.

Nice job yourself.

Winter carried the fawn over and lied the creature on top of its mother. It would be the last time the two shared their warmth, soon to turn cold and then devoured by hungry predators. The two would then drag the kills together back to their den. The others would be proud of such a large prize.

As time ticked, the drug wore off and Winter's limp became more severe. The wound lied open exposing flesh and dried blood painted his paw in red. Though, the pain was unbearable - the feast was worth it. His wound would heal in time and the kingdom would be fed.
