Open Arms
She dug around outside of her new den. Tan sat on a branch above her while the old she-wolf scraped away some snow. Winter would be coming soon, and she wanted to make sure that her new den was ready ahead of time. Her old bones probably wouldn't be able to handle any extreme temperatures anymore, she wasn't sure. But she wasn't going to wait until the last minute to find out. She ached here and there, but it seemed to remain at bay more often than not when she exercised and kept up a good routine. Though her body was old, her mind and spirit were just as spritely as ever. She took a deep breath after she scooped away the last bit of snow that lingered at the den entrance, then she thought for a minute. It would benefit her greatly if the den could be warmed up...but how? The idea of using pelts hadn't crossed her mind yet, as the she-wolf was used to the ways of old. Using animal parts to better her own way of living had been unheard of to her, but the world was always changing. Ideas were always evolving.
"Tan, when you sleep in the trees during the cold seasons, how do you keep warm?" Tan glanced down to eye the old woman, a thoughtful look in her beady brown eyes. "Well, I have feathers to keep me warm. And if it gets unbearably cold, I tend to find shelter in trees with thicker cover. Or old owl's nests. Alternatively, I can always use you like a blanket." Avalon chuckled, glancing up at her companion with amusement in her eyes. "I see. Well, I don't have feathers, and although my fur is thick enough to keep me warm most seasons, there are times when the winter is unforgiving. The ground isn't as warm as I'd like it to be...and these old bones are beginning to creak. I fear that this coming winter may be too much to handle without difficulty." She sighed as she returned her gaze to her den, thinking about what she could possibly do to help her next season. |
