dark mists are cloaking what the eyes can see

Éldi nestled into the tall summer grasses as he watched the herd of buffalo move slowly past. The sun was beginning its downward track but it was still hot and humid. In some ways he was regretting his journey south but he'd grown bored of the north and was eager for a change of scenery. After a long journey where he'd had little choice but to feed on small prey and scavenged meals he was anxious for something fresh, something larger. The question was of course how to obtain such a meal. He knew that bison, with their thick wooly coats, would overheat quickly in the hot summer sun if he could get the herd going and single out an already weakened animal. The thing was he wasn't sure the large beasts would find one lone wolf enough of a thread to run. In all likely hood he'd be the creature being chased off the prairie lands.

Éldi's eyes turned skyward as he watched his raven, Askr, survey the herd. He hoped for signs of struggle, illness or age that might pick a potential target for him. If there was no such target he planned to move on. There was no way he was going to go up against a healthy animal. There was bravery then there was flat out stupidity and he didn't care to have trampled to death on his tombstone.

A call alerted him to Askr who was hovering above on old bull. The raven landed on the creatures hump but when its skin shivered at the touch and it groaned in irritation the raven took back to the sky. Éldi nodded quietly to himself. Yes, that was a decent target. An elderly animal was a prime candidate to run down in the heat if he could keep his own body cool. He had a rather thick coat himself.
