Rosemary gave an ominous call that disturbed the silence of the early morning, the sky tinted lavender as the first rays of sunrise began to shine. The early morning had left a thick fog over the long yellow grasses that now provided his cover as he sized up his prey. Less than food Rosemary was interested in their striped pelts that were so reminiscent of his family’s coloration. He stayed low to the ground, standing down wind, his eyes wide as he crept closer

The call had been one to action, summoning any hunters that wished to join him on his hunt; the beasts were large and would take a combined effort to be brought down, especially with their large single toed hooves. A soft growl escaped him, causing one of the beasts to lift its head before it returned to its grazing. He could tell just by looking that the leather the creatures produced would be soft and pliant, an excellent crafting material for those who knew how to treat hides, which thankfully he did. He considered going after one of the young foals, but they blended too well into the cacophony of black and white made by the adults.

Lucretia answered Rosemary's call as soon as she heard it. It was difficult to steal time away from Deathbelle with her labor on the horizon, but the vikings were in town and she wanted something to sweet her own offering. The leftover honey tonics from the pregnancy had fermented by now, creating a thick, heady mead. Those alone were an enticing trade, but the help of a striking hide or piece of meat would ensure any item she was interested in would belong to her.

"Good morning, brother mine," she purred, pricking her ears as she inspected the herd. Herbivores were funny things. How easy it would be to scuffle along the ground for everything she needed to eat. "Do you have your eye on any particular specimen?"

This was not his time. The time of night and shadows was rapidly slipping away, giving way to the light of day and each passing moment was causing more and more pain for the cave dweller. As the first rays of sun touched the blades of grass, Thoren would groan and his stomach would growl. He was hungry, he needed food before he disappeared for the day. Fortunately for him, a howl would sound- calling hunters to it. Well…he was far from a hunter but he wasn’t useless…not yet. Thus, his earthen toned body would turn towards the sound, slipping into a crouched prowling gait as he approached the other two wolves.

Ears twitched, eyes were held particularly narrowed- far from normal- as if the meager amount of light caused him a great deal of pain…which it did. “If want help, choose quick. Sun hurts eyes.” He spoke with a heavy accent over some words, his sentences incomplete and choppy showing that he was not all too fluent in their common tongue. He was a stranger to them, and that made the brown wolf wary of the two but even he could put his differences aside for a few bites of meat. Anything to satisfy his stomach until dusk.

Thoren trying to get a bite of that meat.
NOTE: Thoren is extremely sensitive to light, he can also see a bit better at night due to living in tunnels and caves all his life.

A haunting call rang out, the sound scattering a flock of birds of which the Ademre quietly stalked. Her paw stamped annoyance into the hard ground and she craned her head to listen to the strangers summons. It was a call to hunters, and Kindle felt it was fitting to join them in catching a meal to replace that which she'd lost.

The purple-tinted woman strode towards the group, ears perking as she recognized one of the males present. "Greetings." She murmured, turning to each of them as she approached to give a curt nod of acknowledgement. "May I join you and your companions, Rose?" With the four of them, they could surely take down prey that the lone woman would not dream of conquering solo. Her stomach growled with hunger, and her paw made subtle motions of anticipation into the dirt.

He grinned as the violet woman stepped into the clearing and wondered briefly if she had followed him. He certainly hoped so. First he addressed his sister, his voice low as he gestured for the three to come closer. “We’ll be going after the largest, I have plans for it other than food. Luce, you and…” He trailed off, struggling to remember the name of the stranger before he realized he hadn’t given it. “Him, will flank the herd, draw the male out and separate him from the rest.” He commanded

“Kindle and I will get ahead of him and corner him. Once we have him trapped, we’ll all move in to finish the job.” He explained, flashing the gilded fangs as he spoke with a grin “Under no circumstances is anyone to attack near the spine or back, go for the lower legs, and throat, nothing else.”

08-11-2019, 04:15 PM (This post was last modified: 08-11-2019, 04:15 PM by Lucretia.)

Lucretia noted that Rosemary seemed familiar with the small... blue? creature that appeared. Did they really did another feisty blue thing around Ashen? Zee was already such a handful. Thoren's heavy accent was interesting; he was strange and weary from the light. Although she desperately wished to know more about him - why did the light pain him? Was it genetic? A condition that had developed over time? - the hunt left no room for pleasant conversation. "Agreed. A good plan," was all she said as she moved into position.

Hunting was like a dance. When you moved in concert with so many other wolves, Lucretia thought it was one of nature's most beautiful things. The most brutal movements could be rendered precise and delicate with the right instruction and proper execution. She fell into position and stalked towards the herd, keeping her eyes carefully the target. Lucretia melted into the background, eyeing the flinty hooves of the herd as they moved through the brush. There. She saw her opportunity. It was likely that would have to make the first move, but hopefully the stranger would pick up on the noise of the herd scattering even if he couldn't see.

Darting forward, she nipped at the heels of the male and aimed to drive him apart from his fellows. The herd scattered in panic, cleaving into thirds. Lucretia tailed a group made up of their intended target and two younger males, hot-heated and foolish. They kicked up their heels and squealed as she stayed close by, monitoring their target's movement.

Another would show up, but aside from a slight nod to the purple toned wolf, he kept his focus on the guy that had summoned them. Ears forward, he tried to follow his gaze to the stallion that the lead hunter intended to take. The slight pause as the wolf mentioned him left Thoren smirking slightly. His task seemed simple enough, draw the stallion out and away from the herd…shouldn’t be too difficult…if he could see properly.

Thoren listened as instructions continued, eyeing Rosemary with confusion as he mentioned only going for the lower legs and throat. This would be much more difficult not being able to go for the spine or back at all. Still, Thoren nodded silently in understanding before turning to follow ‘Luce’ into position. The sun was continuing to rise and it was becoming painful to be out, eyes narrowed to slits to try and combat the brightness of the day. Already a dull headache was forming in his head, making him wish he had just went hungry instead of being out during the day hunting.

The zebra were already hard enough for him to keep separate, their stripes did their job well in confusing him, but having Luce as an aide helped keep him focused on the correct stallion. When she sprang forward he was only a second behind her. Jaws snapped at the heels, trying to herd the Zebra in the right direction…without being kicked. When other young stallions joined in he would pause in his snapping and turn his teeth towards them, attempting to drive them away. It took him away from the current target for only a few moments before his attention was back on the correct Zebra.

Kindle listened with interest as the plan was explained, mentally filing away the black and white woman as 'Luce.' The brown man had no name given, but that worked out fine for Kindle. It was rare to find the same wolf twice when you were a loner, names were of little importance to her. Black tipped ears twitched to catch the sound of Rose's voice as he spoke, nodding her head in understanding. It was weird that he'd demand the hunters avoided specific areas of the beast, but the Ademre woman could see the beauty in the pelt and could understand why he might want it intact.

The brown man and Luce sped off and away to drive the herd and pick out Rose's chosen male, meanwhile Kindle took the moment before it became her turn to act to comment on his choice of assignments. "If I didn't know any better, I'd think you gave me the less dangerous job on purpose." She began playfully. "But then you placed yourself in the same role. Are you just to valuable, Sir, to be beneath those flying hooves?" The Ademre gave him a sideways glance and a flirtatious smile before she, too, took off - making sure he had no time to reply.

She gave the herd a wide berth, watching carefully for the direction which they cut the stallion so that she could get in front of it as Rose directed. She knew he'd be close behind and so she did not look back to him. If he was not a capable hunter, he was not worth her attention regardless. Built perfectly for the task, Kindle was able to weave fluidly through the dancefloor until she came up ahead of the stallion. It would be time soon for them to cut off his sprint, and the Ademre woman waited to hear Rose's pawpads alongside her before running into it's charge.

He grinned at Kindle’s comment as they moved into position, a witty and flirtatious comeback to her comment on his lips that died when she bolted after their quarry. He followed close at her heels, suddenly steely and focused on the hunt as the zebra was separated from its herd and driven toward them.

With the grace of a dancer he leapt forward in an elegant pounce, his gilded fangs bared in a wide snarl before he sank them into the zebra’s thick neck. He tore his head to the side, the bladed fangs cutting through flesh and tissue as he pushed himself away from his prey.

The zebra gave a strangled hoot of panic and kicked its hooves out wildly, but only succeeding in spilling itself on the ground as blood flowed freely from the wound on its throat. The stallion lifted its lip, bearing its square teeth and threatening to bite anyone who got too close. Rosemary licked the blood from his lips and grinned before charging in again, dodging the flailing hoofed limbs and seizing the zebra by the throat. The zebra kicked out wildly and shrieked through his grip but it wasn't long before the kicks lost their fervor and the zebra collapsed dead.

The hunt was going well! Rosemary's strategizing had placed them in ideal locations to thwart their quarry. Lucretia kept up at the rear, nipping at the stallion's heels to drive him forward into their trap. Her partner seemed to have difficulty dealing with the rising sun - his eyes were narrowed against the light as if it pained him. No matter. Perhaps they would get a chance to chat after the hunt.

Rose handily brought the zebra down, but it was intent on struggling. There was a ferocious will to live within the beast that she respected immensely. It was a shame that it had to die here. Once it fell heavily, Lucretia darted in nip at the beast's lower limbs, hoping to sever a tendon. As her jaws found their way around its lower limb, she heard an ugly crunch. The zebra screamed a guttural cry and she felt blood flood her mouth. Its hooves flailed less wildly as its strength began to drain.

For once, Thoren was glad he wasn’t attempting a killing blow. Instead, he just had to herd the Zebra in the right direction and keep it on course. It worked well, between he and ‘Luce’ they led the Zebra right into the other two. Watering eyes could see enough to know that the leader of the hunt was going for the throat not once but twice as the stallion did its best to fend off the predators. He couldn’t find the purple toned wolf, but he imaged she was at the front helping. Luce had dived for a lower hind leg, a sickening crunch told him she had bit down hard enough to break something.

Thoren moved forward now, jaws snapping and grasping hold of the other hind leg to keep it from kicking his hunting partner. The struggling slowly diminished, but Thoren did not let go until the life and energy of the zebra was gone. Once it was, he stood there panting with eyes narrowed, neck arched and head tipped down enough that the harshest bit of the sun was on the top of his head near his ears- not on his eyes. That dull throb of a headache was growing, the pain of it now prominent on his expression as he stood there waiting for his turn to take some food.

The hunt was very nearly completed - the brown wolf, Luce and Rose had each taken their turns at the stallion and Kindle reminded herself of Rose's command that they were not to aim for the back or spine. Not that it mattered too much, the Ademre woman was smaller then average and thus her best chance at battle would be to go for the underside of the zebra. She leaped in as the others did, and being that herself and Rose both were both placed at the stallion's head she chose to move in with him as he stuck. She alternated his bites. His first attack drew blood and as he pulled away Kindle shot in to bite upon the same spot, further severing the exposed tissues. The creature flailed it's hooves wildly and she watched as the three others avoided their hits skillfully. At least she was hunting with competent wolves. The kill was upon them then and as Rose, Luce and the brown one moved in to finish it Kindle did so as well. She kept her jaws far from Rose's, but latched onto the throat of the thing as well to help drag it to the ground.

Once dead, she released the zebra and stepped back. The Ademre woman licked her bloody lips, stomach gurgling. "Well done." She breathed to them all. "Now, I'm starving. Rosemary, I assume you have reason to want the spine intact. Would you be a gentleman and retrieve your trophy so that the rest of us might enjoy a meal?" Kindle had no knowledge of how to skin a beast, but it would be difficult for the four to eat around whatever amount of pelt Rose wanted intact.
