Not On Your Life

She could smell them out there at the edge of the treeline. The spattering of sunlight from above helped to hide their strangely shaped bodies. The dark woman knew for sure that there were a few of them. She had caught sight before they had slowly backed away into the trees. The beasts were smart. One look at their eyes let her know. Their minds were working. What they wanted from this place, the woman didn't know. She did know that they wouldn't get it though. This was not their land.

Fel stood stock still. She was out in the center of the clearing where she'd stopped when she first laid eyes on the apes. Her lips had curled back in a snarl, exposing curved killing fangs. The lead ape had done the same, revealing his own set of fangs. The wolf was startled. She'd heard of such creatures, but had never come into contact with one. Just her luck that, on her very first encounter, she would come across at least four.

She wanted to call for aid, but was sure that if she made a sound or a quick movement, they would attack. Fel did not back down from challenges, but she was smart enough to know that she couldn't win this fight on her own. The silver laced woman gave up a silent prayer, asking the Fallen God to send her family to her aid. She would need it, for the call of a crow broke the stand off. The chimpanzees rushed from the treeline, coming straight for her. Fel bristled, sent up her own war cry, and rushed forward to meet them in battle.
