If I Mess Up, I Just Cover It In Cheese

Skælingr learned about the Battlefield from a loner he'd traded with. It seemed this was a common place for wolves to go if they were looking to practice their skills in battle. Though, from the sound of it this place was also dangerous. Unsuspecting loners might find themselves Shanghai'd into packs. He knew it was a risk but it was a calculated one. The wolves in this new land were fierce fighters and if he was going to protect himself and his wife he needed to get better. Tipping back his head Skælingr howled for an opponent. Win or lose it would be good experience and any wounds he obtained could be readily treated by his wife. Perhaps she'd appreciate the practice herself. "Speech" |

It'd been a good while since Corvus had really fought. Even at the raid by Winterfell, his fight against Ignis had hardly been what anyone could call a real fight - it'd been him having a tantrum at best, and the thought of that whole thing made him feel oddly uneasy. Maybe he needed to really focus on training again, and getting his mind off that stuff and focus on the future. His relationship with Twig was blossoming wonderfully, and with the return of Lyric he felt like she was happier than ever. He knew he needed to focus on that, and improving himself, now that things with Abaven were looking so bright.
Wearing his extremely goofy helmet, and much more attractive badger fur bracers that he and Twig had crafted together, he headed to the Battlefield. It'd been awhile since he'd gone this way and he wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but the sound of a male's call ringing across the flat plain caught his attention. Hurrying along toward the sound, he paused a good distance from the stranger and dipped his head in greeting. "Looking for a quick fight?" Obviously he was. What a stupid question. "My name's Corvus, I'm from Abaven."

Skælingr didn't have to wait long at all. It seemed the howl was barely out of his mouth when a challenger approached. He was a large and heavily built man of similar age. Skæ nodded in greeting. "Yes, I am. My name is Skælingr of nowhere in particular." He faced off against the other man and set his defenses. He waited to make sure the other wolf was ready before he charged forward. Skælingr sought to close the distance between them as he shifted slightly off to his right. He twisted his head to his left and sought to grab the other man's shoulder in his fangs. He wanted to get a good grip though he was also aware that he he'd be making himself vulnerable as well. He didn't want to get pinned by the larger opponent but he didn't want to just dance around and nip like a pup either. Skælingr Nalin Catharsis vs Corvus for Spar Round 1/? The other wolf wasted little time with small talk, which was just fine by him. He wasn't really here to make a friend anyway, just to work on his own personal fighting skills. "Pleasure to meet you, Skælingr," he offered out of respect before the two of them faced off. He watched as the stranger, who was a bit smaller than him though by enough to mean the fight wasn't fairly evenly matched, set his defenses. Corvus did the same, falling back a bit and distributing his weight evenly, ears pinning back as he waited for the other to strike - or make a move that meant Corvus should strike.
Skælingr charged him quickly, though he reacted just as fast. The other male aimed for his shoulder and grabbed on. Corvus wasn't the type to fight by ducking and dodging; his heavy build didn't give much room for speed in general, so he had learned to use his size to his advantage. Wincing slightly at the hard bite, he twisted his own head, jaws unhinging as he sought to grab hold of the side of Skælingr's neck. It wasn't a good enough position to really leave him vulnerable enough that he'd submit instantly, like if he'd grabbed onto the underside of his throat, but he hoped he might get a firm grip nonetheless, bearing down enough that it might be painful without being overly aggressive. He was done fighting like a pup as well; he might get a bit knocked around in a practice spar, but it was nothing he couldn't recover from, and what better time than now to focus on training when Abaven was doing so well?

Skælingr's fangs found purchase on the man's shoulder and he dug in deep with his fangs, seeking to get a strong hold and figuring he'd just roll with the punches. He prepared himself for pain, making sure to keep his defenses set. His shoulders were rolled forward his neck scrunched as he sought to keep himself close to his opponent. He felt fangs dig into the side of his neck and he winced but it wasn't enough to make Skælingr let go. Instead he sought to dig in deeper, working to scissor his fangs near the tendon that connected the trapezius to the leg. He did not intend to sever it but he hoped to startle the other man into releasing his own grip or attempting to pull away from Skælingr. He knew he couldn't stay in this position for long so he had to do what he could. Corvus stiffened himself against the other male's attack. Pain from a fight wasn't something he really feared. No, the outcome of losing an important fight was much more scary - imagining someone threatening his pack, or someone he loved.. that was really what drove him to better himself. That was why he returned a bite of his own so intensely, hoping to get some good traction on the side of his neck. Maybe he could use his sheer strength to overpower him, though this was beginning to look more and more like a game of metaphorical tug-of-war with them both digging in and refusing to let go.
The pain stung, but he tried to bare through it, leaning into the bite rather than trying to tug away. That would no doubt hurt worse than simply allowing Skælingr to maintain his hold on him, however precarious a position that was for him - well, for the both of them. Instead of fully pulling away he tried to swivel just slightly, enough so he could deepen his grip on Skælingr's neck, trying to swing a paw out from beneath him and swipe at one of the other male's limbs. Maybe a feeble effort at best, but better than nothing as the two of them grappled with each other.
