Aoife slowly dragged the bucket of water towards her partly hidden "camp" near the festival. It was bigger than her and weighed more, but she persisted, and the heavy bucket inched its way nearer until finally it was within the "protected" circle of stones around her camp and she was able to drop the handle and flop down like a limp noodle for a moment, panting.
But getting the water there was only step one. Well, more like step... a lot. She already had several other buckets scattered around, though they weren't filled with water. They were filled with a variety of plants and berries thar she had smashed up with rocks like she'd learned from Mister Skaelingr when she'd seen him smushing up a plant for making rope. She had spent forEVER finding them all. She had a couple of white bunny hides there too, that she'd begged off her da. He said they were a kind of rabbit from up north that turned white in the winter to blend in. She couldn't imagine how turning white would make them blend in to all the green and brown, but her da was a great hunter so he had to be right. Maybe they blended in with white flowers. She had found a broken off piece of flint that had been thrown away too, and that was laying on the bunny furs waiting.
After catching her breath she scurried through her camp to find the cracked jug she'd scavenged when it had been thrown out. It leaked, but held enough water for her to scoop some into each of the other buckets. That wasn't enough though - she knew that they needed something else to be used as a dye. She giggled a little to herself when she remembered one of the things her da had said worked when she had pestered him to tell her how he dyed things.
Pee.
She glanced around nervously and a little embarrassedly to make sure there was no one else around, then clambered up onto a bucket, balancing awkwardly there.... and peed.
By the time she had peed a little in each bucket, she was barely getting a dribble out at a time. Man, next time she needed to really drink a bunch of water first! Or ration it a lot better. Whoops.
Getting a long stick and plopping down next to each bucket to stir it all together, she nodded to herself in satisfaction. Everything was going according to plan! Now she just had to figure out how to build a fire! Then she could heat them all up like she was supposed to.
