If You Don't Make Those Little Noises, It Won't Work

Lynvarr sat heavily on the ground after climbing up the cliffs of the polar sound to the higher elevation above. The ground here was mostly flat and stretched out far in the distance, yet slightly north of them was a strange line of stones stacked on top of each other. He looked back to see how Shilah was doing. "You gonna hang in there?"

He chuckled at the man's reply before padding over to the wall. He leaned out and sniffed at it but it didn't smell particularly odd, just the usual stone and earth. The clouds were moving in quickly now. They stretched in a smooth gray sheet across the sky. Lyn leapt on top of the wall. There wasn't a really good way to mark it but the years of erosion had worn off a number of small stones. He gingerly picked one up and set it right in the middle of the wall. Just in case.

Shilah was gasping for breath by the time he managed to catch up to Lynvarr. What a miserable climb! He definitely preferred the plains to this chilly, mountainous landscape. He could tell the air at the higher elevation was colder and there was little shelter here to block the wind. "I'll live. I'm just definitely not going to climb down that." He planned to head south after this, straight through the battlefield. With a little lucky it would be a nice, easy decline.

Shilah joined Lynvarr, hopping up onto the wall before pawing at it with his claws. What a weird structure. He quickly dub out his map and started a thick line for the wall but he only could draw a little at a time. It wound and twisted off in the distance and it was hard to tell just how far it went.

Lynvarr trotted along the way, his claws clicking on stone as he went until he came to a hole in the wall that cut it very nearly in half. He stared at the gap, wondering what had caused it. It could have been something to do with humans since they were likely the creatures that created this strange strip of rock. Then again perhaps the weather had simply warn it down. Maybe a tree fell on it? he wasn't quite sure. The wind started to pick up but Lynvarr observed it as a good thing. In the distance he could see blue sky. Maybe it would push the clouds away. His legs coiled beneath him as he sprang across the gap, landing gracefully on the other side. Once there he stacked a few more rocks to add as a marker. "Try not to knock my trail markers over." He cast a mischievous grin at Shilah, knowing the other man would leap to clear the gap and would likely land right on top of the trail marker if he tried to jump dead center.

Shilah followed along after Lynvarr, enjoying the extra height the wall gave them while exploring. He couldn't say he enjoyed that there was a giant chunk missing out of the wall and that Lynvarr had decided to set up one of his trail markers right where Shilah intended to jump. "I'll do my best, but you better wait til I fix up my map." He unfurled the map and quickly sketched in where the hole in the wall was. That knowledge could come in handy some day but for now it was more of a nuisance. Shilah rolled up the map and tucked it away. The wind was really starting to come down from the north now. He backed up, eyed the hole then raced forward, leaping as far as he could to clear the gap and just clear Lynvarr's trail markers. They wobbled a bit a mere inch behind him. Proud of his acheivement he puffed up his chest. "Ha! I'm more nimble than you give me credit for!"

Lynvarr laughed. "Ok, ok, fair enough." He continued his way along the wall, noting that the surrounding terrain was pretty sparse apart from mosses and a few small gatherings of cedar trees. Still, there were enough short grasses growing here in the summer that he imagined caribou and other ungulates found enough to eat. Winter would likely be another story, with little tree cover the snow was likely to drift far and wide in the wind.

"I wonder what the humans used these for. Some sort of elevated trail system?" He leaned down to scratch at the wall once more before erecting another trail marker and working to the last edge of the wall. He wondered how long it would take nature to reclaim her landscape and wipe the human relic from the face of the earth. It seemed to be eroding pretty extensively in some places.

Shilah stepped gingerly around the trail marker which he still felt was a little bit silly given that the wall didn't branch out as far as he could til. Still, he said nothing. Perhaps Lynvarr was just practicing. He snorted at Lyn's guess as to the purpose of the wall. "Yea, I suppose it could be a trail system or it could be, you know, a wall." He leapt off the wall, just missing the rock that Lynvarr sent sailing in his direction. It was just as well, the Mile-High Woods were directly south of them and if they kept following the wall it would take them northward. Shilah rolled out his map, marking the curve of the wall before rolling it back up and tucking it away. By now streaks of blue could be seen in the sky as the sun worked its way toward the horizon. At least there didn't seem to be much of a chance of rain and for that he was grateful. Of course, now if it decided to rain they'd at least have some shelter in the woods if not the rocky terrain that lay to the southwest of them.
