Tied To What Is Late

Ragna picked a nice open clearing in the gulley, where the walls of the channel opened up to allow a bit more sunlight down into the brush. She'd met a nice young man who was looking for a spot to craft some weaponry. She'd already gotten a fire going for her own projects, not knowing if he'd need it or not. She'd had a craving for chamomile tea and she also decided to make a poultice to help with some swelling in one of her ankles from all the traveling she'd been doing. It wasn't fun getting older.
Ragna had found a large clump of chamomile and she picked as much as she needed. Ragna set down the boquet. Selecting a few plants, Ragna started to snip the flowering tops off of them with her fangs, dividing them into two piles. One for the tea and one for the poultice.

Stjarna trotted happily after Ragna, a large piece of leather clenched in their teeth for crafting a pair of bracers as well as a sling. Star had a good piece of leather that they had been working tirelessly on. Taking the leather between their fangs, Stjarna started working on cutting a rough piece out that would fit around one of their front legs. chewing kept their mouth full so Star didn't have to worry too much about carrying on a conversation. Once the patter for the bracer was cut out Star set it aside and pawed through the scraps, selecting one that could be made into a sling pouch with a little work. Star chewed off the long stringy ends until they were left with something vaguely oval. The breeze picked up but down in the gulley the walls protected both wolves and their fire from the wind. So far no sign of rain but Star knew it was best to stay vigilant.

Ragna scratched at her neck for a moment before carrying on with her projects. She reached into her travois and pulled out two ceramic bowls that had been wrapped in a deer hide. She put an ounce of the flowers in one bowl for tea and several other flowers in the other for the poultice. Taking a deer bone in her mouth, she titled her head so the balled end would mash the chamomile flowers for the tea and for the poultice. She worked back and forth between the bowls until she was satisfied. She made sure to mash the poultice flowers a bit more harshly. Setting the bone down she paused for a moment to watch Stjarna before deciding to strike up a little conversation. "I saw you and your siblings at the party. You all look remarkably alike as far as markings go." It had been rather amusing to see them altogether. No one in her old clan passed on such distinctive markings to so many litters. Or.. one giant litter? She wasn't quite sure what their circumstances were but if one femme gave birth to all of them in one go she certainly had Ragna's pity.

Stjarna returned to the bracer and stretched out a long lean leg on top of the piece of leather, lifting the sides and wrapping it around the limb to make sure it would fit decently enough. Satisfied, Star held the leather with their paws and then started chewing holes in it. This wasn't just chewing to satisfy an urge but to create careful, calculated holes in the leather where the lacing would go through to tighten it around their limbs. Once that was done Star moved back to the leather pouch. While they were punching holes in leather they might as well take care of the sling pouch too. Star carefully used his canine fangs to puncture a hole on either side of the pouch for the leather straps to go through.
Licking the taste of leather from their mouth, Star chuckled as Ragna mentioned their siblings. "Yes, it seems some of my family's genes are particularly potent. There was a color blind wolf in our village who had a most awful time telling us apart. Do you have any siblings Ragna?"

Ragna shook her head at the thought of trying to tell the Aracari siblings apart without the aid of color. She was grateful for her own sight. "Oh I have a few. An older sister and a younger sister but we don't keep in touch much." They'd all gone off and gotten married, moving with their husband's packs as was tradition and since they'd all moved so far away it became hard to stay in touch. Now she'd moved once more with Skælingr. Picking up her water skin, Ragna added a pint of water to the tea bowl, carefully maneuvering a ceramic lid over top of it. The healing properties of chamomile were prone to evaporation so she wanted to prevent as much of that as possible. She very carefully scooted the bowl to the fire before turning back to the poultice mixture. She added just enough water to get things wet before scooting that ceramic bowl near the fire as well. She'd let it heat and mash it more until it was a pulp, cool enough to apply to her sore ankle.

Star was pretty shocked at the idea of not seeing one's siblings very often. Granted, the Aracari wandered hither and yon without much coordination but they always seemed to find each other again. Stjarna wondered if they'd eventually drift apart like this woman and her sisters.
Star gathered the leather strands they kept in a deer hide bundle in the travois. Star started at the bottom, threading the leather cordage through the bottom holes then crisscrossing their way up, alternating the holes on either side to form an 'x' like pattern of lacing. Once at the top, Star tied a little knot at each end of the strand to prevent them from slipping back out. Next Star pulled the pouch forward between their paws and placed a piece of the leather cord on either side of the pouch. Picking up one of the leather strands they tied a knot in one end then repeated the process with the other. Stjarna then threaded the leather through the holes and tied another knot to make sure the cord didn't slip through and cause them to lose the pouch. Stjarna pulled the leather cords tight so that the leather pouch formed more of a pouch than a flat piece.
