Boots of Spanish Leather

Áskell and Gossamer were meeting again for crafting time and to move a step closer toward their goal of having a competition to see who made the best weapon. Today Áskell was going to work on making a bone knife.
"Ok, first thing you might want to do is try dropping a rock on the bone to start making cracks and breaking it into more manageable pieces." Áskell grinned at the magpie. Break stuff? Yea, he was good at that. He grabbed the leg bone he planned to make a knife out of and carefully set it down on a smooth flat stone. He then grabbed a chunk of granite in his jaws and dropped it on the bone. Not much happened at first but after a few repeats he started get cracks and splinters.

Gossamer trotted to the border with Habari, Ásta behind her carrying the travois as usual. She'd been thinking and decided that she wanted to craft a bracer today instead of a weapon. She was already pretty sure she had something awesome already and she wasn't going to let a stupid boy tell her what to do. She soon arrived and spied Áskell already working on something. "Hey there, that looks interesting."
Ásta set the travois down and pulled out the supplies that they'd need for the lesson today. "Ok, here we go. The first thing you're going to need to do to make a bracer is to chew the leather into the proper size for your leg."
Gossamer set her leg on the edge of the hide and flipped it over her leg to get an idea of how much she needed to chew. Once she made a decision she set to work chewing on the leather piece until she had a rough shape cut out.

Áskell grinned at Gossamer then cocked his head when she mentioned a bracer. "Bracer? Isn't that a kind of armor? What good is that going to do when fighting a predator?"
"Ok, that piece there looks good." Kári pointed toward one of the longer pieces. "You'll want to finish chewing it into the right shape." Áskell nodded, if there was one thing he was good at it was chewing on stuff. Áskell dipped his head and got to work, chewing very carefully on the bone to refine the blade. He then picked it up and rubbed the blade against the granite to sharpen it even more without risking cutting his mouth.

Gossamer turned her head at the boy's comment. "I'm sure my weapon is good enough for a rabbit which is no a predator. But if you're worried you don't have anything good enough you can keep making weapons."
She turned her attention back to Ásta who was ready to deliver the next set of instructions for the bracer. "Ok, now you'll want to chew holes in the leather for the lacing, trying to get them opposite each other." Gossamer nodded and set the piece of leather between her paws so she could carefully chew a hole in the side with her canine teeth. She worked along one edge then turned the leather piece over and worked along the other edge until she had all the holes chewed in.

Áskell shrugged at Gossamer's comment. "Suit yourself, while you play with leather I'm just going to be making better and better weapons to beat you with." And of course he knew a rabbit wasn't a predator but they were using a rabbit to test effectiveness.
"Alright, next you'll take one of the leather strips we have and wrap it around the handle portion for a grip. You may need my help." Áskell nodded. As he'd fragmented the bone there were some odd shapes in the handle part, it was not perfectly smooth so wrapping leather around it would be useful. Áskell balanced the bone blade between his paws and turned it while Kári wrapped the leather around and tied knots to secure it.

"Done!" Gossamer chirped as she showed off her work to the fox. Ásta nodded her approval. "Ok, good work. Next we need to thread the lacing through. Let me get it started and then I'll show you how to criss cross it."
Gossamer nodded and watched as Ásta threaded the leather strand straight through the bottom two holes and then started crisscrossing it up the leg. Gossamer took hold of the leather strand and then started crisscrossing it through every other hole to form an x pattern. Once she got to the top Ásta showed her how to tie a little knot in each end so that the strand wouldn't slip out so easily. Ásta helped her put it on and test it and between the two of them they got it tied.
