Ardyn squinted against the driving snow and wind as he padded to the meeting boulder. The weather was rough, but he wanted to be a master of fighting, no matter the weather or conditions beneath his feet.
As he reached the boulder, he shook himself, armor rattling. He wore only the armor and his bracers, cloak hanging on one of the pegs on the wall in the cave system. The lemurs and mandrill monkeys had carved little holes into the stone, and inserted sections of saplings, cut at places where branches came out to form hooks.
He stretched slowly, working his muscles, warming up, until he felt limbered and ready, and then he lifted his muzzle and howled into the snow-laden wind, tail wagging briefly. Who in the pack would come spar him? Coran, for round two? Maybe Rhaegara, or Cairo, or maybe Caelia? Names ran through his mind as he wiggled with anticipation.

Ardyn at first glance is as black as can be imagined with a raven sheen.
Closer inspection proves that he shimmers in fire tones in every hair on his hide right down to his lashes.
More obviously, he glows like a bed of coals and flames with every movement and brush of fur. His tail is usually wagging, so blazes like a torch.
His adult teeth are in and his saber canines have grown to their full length (see profile). His mane and tail hair have grown to full length, as well as being lightweight and easily buffeted by breezes.
A look at his front paws will give the impression of hands, with his dew claw dropped low and lengthened into a functioning thumb, and his toes elongated into fingers. He has retractable, solid black cat-like claws on every paw.
Ardyn has developed a glowing mast of intricate markings in fire and ice colors over his face, symmetrical over the last seasons of Year 17 (see profile for details). During hunts or raids/sieges, he will smudge them out with black soot to cover the glow, otherwise, they are bright enough to note at first direct glance at his face. Not all his artwork currently portrays the mask markings.
He is also often bedecked in beads, small bells, feathers in blues, ribbons and braids thanks to the Ooze Event of Halloween 2021, and the Coathanger item that he got. The accessories generally are seen most in his mane and tail hair. He removes the brighter items and bells for hunts or battle.

He’d been planning to test Ardyn, though he’d already known the boy was excelling at fighting for his age, and when he heard the boy’s call for a sparring partner, he veered, grinning to himself at the coincidence. It wasn’t his favorite kind of weather, but that would just serve as training fodder for the boy. And knowing Aurielle, the Spirit would choose the worst kind of weather to initiate a raid in.
He grinned at the boy as he came to a stop roughly ten feet off, head cocking as he asked, “You called?”
Cai settled into a balanced stand, tail flagging, though the wind battered it and made it rather difficult to keep the appendage still, and lowered his head to level with his spine, ears already flat against his nape and eyes narrowed against the wind.
“I’ll take first move, shall I?”, he offered through a grin that was swiftly replaced with a wrinkled, playful snarl, jaws parting slightly.
He barely gave the boy time to not before he launched forward, bear claw-clad toes flexing to grip the frosty, snowy footing as he sought to come head to head with the young wolf, slightly to Ardyn’s left, his own right, and drop his left shoulder, aiming to slam the near-yearling pup in the center of his breast with the armored point of his shoulder.
As he went, his head tipped to his right, jaws questing to his left and aiming to clamp shut on Ardyn’s left cheek behind the jaw with hopes to grip his young opponent tightly and control Ardyn’s head movement.

It was Cairo who popped from the snow-storm, and Ardyn grinned back at the man, tail torching into a wag as he briefly bowed, before settling into a ready stance as Cairo took his. He mimicked the older man, head and tail leveling with his spine, face wrinkling into a grinning snarl and ears flat against wind and possible attempts to grab him by the ears from Cairo.
Cai moved fast, and Ardyn barely had a moment to step to his own right, evading Cairo’s left shoulder, though a mouthful of glowing black hair parted ways from Ardyn’s jaw in Cai’s teeth. But his head was free, and he sought to twist to his left and push off with his hind paws, back claws flexing from their sheathes to dig into the ground for traction.
His long-haired tail ruddered through the air, fighting wind as he sought to drive the center of his chest into Cairo’s left side behind the shoulder, his front legs lifting from the ground as he sought to wrap this front legs around the underside of Cairo’s neck and over the withers in a bear-hug, pushing his weight forward and hoping to topple the older man as he tilted his head to his right and sought to catch Cairo’s left ear and grip it in his front teeth.
He didn’t expect he would win—Cai was older, and far more experienced than he was, but he would enjoy himself regardless of whether he won or lost here.

Good boy, thought the Sentinel as Ardyn sidestepped his headlong attack, successfully evading the shoulder slam, though Cai succeeded partially in his bite for Ardyn’s jaw, and spat quickly to remove the hair from his teeth and tongue.
The over-sized pup made his own move, and Cairo pivoted swiftly to his left on his hind paws, rearing slightly as he went. Instead of his side, Ardyn’s chest crashed into his own, and Cairo set his back paws wide to take the impact, pretty certain the boy's left some good bruises and, as the boy’s forelegs wrapped around his neck along the slope of his shoulders, Cairo sought to rear farther, his own forelegs rising and seeking to wrap around the boy’s torso under his front legs.
He twisted his head to his right, and Ardyn’s teeth found air as Cairo opened his jaws and sought to snake his muzzle to his right, seeking to clamp his jaws shut on the boy’s muzzle from Ardyn’s right, aiming to gain some grip and thus control the boy’s head successfully this time.

Cairo met him head-on, and Ardyn winced with a grunt as their chests cracked together—that was going to leave a bruise.
His hug was successful, if displaced, and he sought to tighten his hug, fingers of both front paws hoping to clutch at the man’s armored back and drag him closer, hopefully to make it harder for Cairo to utilize his teeth. His back paws braced against the ground, claws sinking deeper to counteract the slush of the churned ground beneath them.
Cairo’s jaws whipped toward him and Ardyn, having missed Cairo’s ear anyway, jerked his head backward and away, muzzle ducking toward his chest to guard his throat. Cai’s teeth grazed his muzzle instead of capturing it, leaving moderate scratches across the top that soon glimmered with hot golden light as blood welled to the surface, though not in any great amount.
It stung, and his eyes watered, but he pushed through, narrowing them and blinking away the reflex tears, aiming to twist his head to his left and duck it forward, muzzle still tucked slightly, seeking to catch Cairo’s neck in the front of his jaws, trying to avoid implementing his sabered canines—he didn’t want to hurt Cairo by accident.
