Ardyn had come, along with Cairo, to participate with the tournament. Win or lose, he intended to enjoy himself, seeing how he did against unfamiliar wolves—it’d show him areas he needed to improve in.
But the name he drew was familiar, but not unwelcome. He spotted his opponent, now a yearling, and his long-haired tail swept into a torch as he drew near enough to call out a friendly greeting.
“Áskell!”
There was little point in saying they’d been drawn as opponents; the other yearling would have heard the drawing, so he gave the other yearling a beat to acknowledge him before initiating, defenses falling into place as he went.
He sought to surge forward, aiming to come face to face with Áskell, shifting his direction to his own right slightly and seeking to drive his bare left shoulder into Áskell’s left shoulder, aiming to stagger the yearling as his right fore-paw lifted, weight taken by his other three legs as he sought to grapple Áskell’s left hind leg in his long toes around the hock and jerk it forward toward himself.
He had to admit he was kind of glad to have been placed with the other yearling. They’d sparred before, with Ardyn coming out victorious. He looked forward to seeing if Áskell would win this time.

Ardyn at first glance is as black as can be imagined with a raven sheen.
Closer inspection proves that he shimmers in fire tones in every hair on his hide right down to his lashes.
More obviously, he glows like a bed of coals and flames with every movement and brush of fur. His tail is usually wagging, so blazes like a torch.
His adult teeth are in and his saber canines have grown to their full length (see profile). His mane and tail hair have grown to full length, as well as being lightweight and easily buffeted by breezes.
A look at his front paws will give the impression of hands, with his dew claw dropped low and lengthened into a functioning thumb, and his toes elongated into fingers. He has retractable, solid black cat-like claws on every paw.
Ardyn has developed a glowing mast of intricate markings in fire and ice colors over his face, symmetrical over the last seasons of Year 17 (see profile for details). During hunts or raids/sieges, he will smudge them out with black soot to cover the glow, otherwise, they are bright enough to note at first direct glance at his face. Not all his artwork currently portrays the mask markings.
He is also often bedecked in beads, small bells, feathers in blues, ribbons and braids thanks to the Ooze Event of Halloween 2021, and the Coathanger item that he got. The accessories generally are seen most in his mane and tail hair. He removes the brighter items and bells for hunts or battle.

Áskell was still sullen but he was slowly coming to accept that his father was gone. The event had created a bit of an unintentional split between him and his brother. Áskell found himself preferring to be alone and going out of his way to avoid other wolves while he was grieving and while he knew it wasn't the best thing he hadn't been able to bring himself to socialize. At least not til talk of a tournament reached Habari. He was a quick to register and eager to see what he could do. It had been awhile since he'd trained.
To his surprise his first opponent was Ardyn. One of the pups he'd met when his father had taken them to the prairie. He was growing into quite a handsome young man and Áskell suddenly felt a bit scrappy compared to the other boy. There was no time to fuss though it was time to fight. He offered a gentle grin and nodded at the other boy before the battle began.
Áskell quickly set his defenses as Ardyn charged. Áskell tensed and as Ardyn got close he slipped to his own right and ducked down low, legs coiling sharply. His neck twisted swiftly to his left as he sought to catch Ardyn's left wrist in his jaws. He hoped to grab the leg and between pulling it to the side against Ardyn's own momentum he hoped to topple the much larger boy. The movement brought him out of the way of the shoulder throw and sweeping right paw but he could not full avoid the other boy's skull which grazed along his ribs. He was perplexed as to why the other boy was using his head and not his teeth. Áskell hoped he hadn't broken a rule by using his own.

Áskell was as quick on the draw as he’d been the last time, and Ardyn grinned. Though he’d gotten a glancing headbutt in, he wasn’t able to avoid the grip. So, he went with it. In fact, he pushed off and threw himself forward, tucking to leave the ground and hoping to yank his opponent with him and off balance, his black coat flaring with bright fire as he went.
As he hit the ground on his back, he sent his right forepaw, claws carefully sheathed, for a slap across Áskell’s eyes as he sought to wrench his left wrist free – if Áskell hadn’t let go already – of his opponent’s jaws. He didn’t try to regain his paws, instead ready to kick out like a cat, tail flicking to cover his underside, and teeth baring in a mock snarl that suggested he hadn’t quite left the puppy-hood playfulness behind.

Áskell's fangs snagged hold of Ardyn's wrist and he had a moment of victory before he felt his head jerked forward sharply. Instinct kicked in just in time and Áskell released his grip. With his body so low to the ground he was thankfully pretty well grounded though the sudden jerking forward motion of his head and strained the muscles in his neck. He quickly stood causing Ardyn's paw to miss his face. Ignoring the pain in his neck and hoping it wasn't something to serious he bounced toward Ardyn with a short hop as he tried to shimmy along the other boy's right side and snag Ardyn's right ankle in his fangs.
