Kali vs Ardyn [Yearling party race]
Kali’s pride was smarting after losing to the bulky Armada girl, but she reasoned with herself that it simply wasn’t her fault! How was she supposed to win against someone who was too heavy to move in the first place? No, it had been an uneven fight against her and that was that. But the race? The race she was sure she would win! Kali was light on her paws and much quicker than most of her siblings. Her slim, streamline figure and long legs ensured that she ran with speed and precision, and once she got a look at her opponent she felt even more confident. He was huge, larger than her by a full foot, but he was much bulkier as well. His legs were longer, but all that bulk would have to put him at a disadvantage.
The girl walked up to him, an alluring smile on her lips. She batted her bicolored gaze as she saddled up next to him, dipping her head up to look at the glowing boy. “Hello, my name is Kali. What might yours be?” she asked, tail flickering behind her lithe, gold wrapped frame. “Let’s make a deal. If I win, you bow to me. If you win, you get whatever you want from me. Sound good?” the girl asked, her smile turning closer to that of a vixen. Like mother like daughter.

He stretched lengthily as he made his way to meet his racing opponent. She was small, though far from tiny, and as she tried her charms on him, his lips quirked in a faint, amused smile, brow points lifting in a questioning perk.
“I am Ardyn Adravendi of Valhalla. A pleasure, Lady.” For now, he left any further honorifics out of the conversation. He generally used them in brief passing, but this wasn’t a political social standing, even if he was being casually observant of the yearlings gathered here tonight. There were yearlings from just about every pack here—he’d even spotted Áskell, but not had the chance to catch the other boy, and Ari, just to name a few. This girl, though, was new to him.
Long-legged and streamlined, she was built to run, as was the Destiny of Valhalla. He’d braided his mane back along his scruff and withers to be out of the way, in case his opponent was one for yanking trailing hair to gain an advantage. His tail, however, flowed loose and long in an ink-black banner on the breeze carried by the river, flaring and torching under the friction as he took his place, cocking his head as he added, “As for what I want, I have no prize in mind. I’m running for the fun of it. If I lose, I’ll have learned what to do differently to better my odds next time. If I win, well. I won. Still plenty to learn from a victory.”
His sabers flashed in his features as he grinned down at her, chuckling, “However, I have no problem with bowing either way. It’s polite behavior.”
He waited for her to take her spot, counting down as he gathered his hind end into a light coil. At the end, he barked, “Go!” and launched forward in a first great bound and flurry of blazing black fur, following the path designated for their race.
He kept one ear canted back to listen for the smaller wolf as he fell into a steady cadence, cruising for now, conserving energy. From coursing prey and wearing it down in hunts alone, he knew how to wait for the right moment.

Ardyn at first glance is as black as can be imagined with a raven sheen.
Closer inspection proves that he shimmers in fire tones in every hair on his hide right down to his lashes.
More obviously, he glows like a bed of coals and flames with every movement and brush of fur. His tail is usually wagging, so blazes like a torch.
His adult teeth are in and his saber canines have grown to their full length (see profile). His mane and tail hair have grown to full length, as well as being lightweight and easily buffeted by breezes.
A look at his front paws will give the impression of hands, with his dew claw dropped low and lengthened into a functioning thumb, and his toes elongated into fingers. He has retractable, solid black cat-like claws on every paw.
Ardyn has developed a glowing mast of intricate markings in fire and ice colors over his face, symmetrical over the last seasons of Year 17 (see profile for details). During hunts or raids/sieges, he will smudge them out with black soot to cover the glow, otherwise, they are bright enough to note at first direct glance at his face. Not all his artwork currently portrays the mask markings.
He is also often bedecked in beads, small bells, feathers in blues, ribbons and braids thanks to the Ooze Event of Halloween 2021, and the Coathanger item that he got. The accessories generally are seen most in his mane and tail hair. He removes the brighter items and bells for hunts or battle.
Immediately, Kali could tell the boy was of the ‘morally upright’ types and her desire to schmooze him reduced to the negatives. He would clearly be no fun, and she had to bite her cheek to keep from sighing. What fun would it be if he didn’t want anything in return from her if he somehow managed to beat her? Races were meant to have stakes in them! The thought of owing something inevitably made one go faster, it gave them a sense of competition, and so far she was getting none of that. No, instead she simply wanted to get it over with. There would be no pleasure in this victory.
Both yearlings lined up at the starting line, taking her preferred starting positions. There was a moment of silence before the boy barked their commencement and they both shot off, legs stretched out and nostrils flaring as they began taking big, steady breaths to keep themselves in check. His long legs ensured him the advantage at the start, able to stretch out longer to get more ground, but that didn’t mean anything to her. She allowed him to be slightly ahead of her, also bidding her own time. They still had a fair amount of space between their position and the finish line, and one had to be strategic about how they went. If she burnt up all her energy then, how would she participate in other races, or work up the energy to gloat in the end? No, she was content to stride along just at his flank. She even purposefully made her breathing sound heavier to give the illusion of struggle. Victory was surely within her grasp.

He kept his pace steady, strides easy. She was panting, but he doubted, if her attempt at flirtation was anything to go by – something she’d dropped when he’d shown disinterest – she wasn’t an honest type. He knew what real tiring sounded like, and given her long legs and build, he doubted she could have tired that quickly.
As the end drew nearer, he stretched his stride a little, though not tapping in on what he really could do with those long legs of his. He saved it for the last twenty feet, where the Destiny bolted abruptly, as if his blazing tail had abruptly turned to fire and bitten him on the rump.
He didn’t care if he won or lost. He’d come to the party to enjoy himself, not get his ego stroked. He’d long been trained out of such self-importance. Any moments of big-headed ‘Son-Of-The-Queen’ ego had been corrected in the den.
So, win or lose, his features held an amused grin, tail flagging cheerily as he went.

While Ardyn may have not gone to the yearling party to get his ego stroked, that was exactly why Kali had gone. After all, why didn’t she deserve to be pampered and preened? She was the next heiress to Habari and her genes were killer, leaving her with a beautiful figure (albeit a bit of an ugly personality). Men lined up to oogle her mother and have them at her beck and call, so it seemed only natural to her that they would for her too. She didn’t understand that her ugly personality was the thing driving the boys away at her age.
He kept up her pace and she kept up hers, expertly controlling her breathing with breaths in through her nose and puffs out through her mouth. Her lungs expanded and deflated as she ran onward, her bicolored gaze fixed on the nearing finish line and it seemed Ardyn had the same idea as her of when to kick it into high gear. They took off at a pull on sprint, her legs eating away at the ground and a genuine, happy grin pulling at the edges of her lips, a laugh threatening to bubble out. This was fun!
