Ardyn padded along the river shore to a nice, clear spot, grinning as he settled into a ready stance facing his opponent for the party spars. Ulfr was to be his opponent for the spar, while a girl he’d not met prior to the party had been his racing opponent.
So far, the night had been fun, and he’d been alternately enjoying himself and keeping an eye on Tel, Legacy, and his sisters, as well as Corbie when he could spot her. However, he didn’t intrude on their evenings unless they approached him to chat or take a break from the festivities.
He regarded Ulfr with a grin. The last time he’d seen the other boy, he’d battled a bear with him as a pup, and the other boy had grown well.
“Hey, Ulfr. Good to see you again. You want the first move?”
He stood relaxed, legs slightly bent and chin tucked, tail level with his spine. Lyr, perched on the sidelines to watch, clarked encouragement, probably making notes for stories from the impending spar.

Ardyn at first glance is as black as can be imagined with a raven sheen.
Closer inspection proves that he shimmers in fire tones in every hair on his hide right down to his lashes.
More obviously, he glows like a bed of coals and flames with every movement and brush of fur. His tail is usually wagging, so blazes like a torch.
His adult teeth are in and his saber canines have grown to their full length (see profile). His mane and tail hair have grown to full length, as well as being lightweight and easily buffeted by breezes.
A look at his front paws will give the impression of hands, with his dew claw dropped low and lengthened into a functioning thumb, and his toes elongated into fingers. He has retractable, solid black cat-like claws on every paw.
Ardyn has developed a glowing mast of intricate markings in fire and ice colors over his face, symmetrical over the last seasons of Year 17 (see profile for details). During hunts or raids/sieges, he will smudge them out with black soot to cover the glow, otherwise, they are bright enough to note at first direct glance at his face. Not all his artwork currently portrays the mask markings.
He is also often bedecked in beads, small bells, feathers in blues, ribbons and braids thanks to the Ooze Event of Halloween 2021, and the Coathanger item that he got. The accessories generally are seen most in his mane and tail hair. He removes the brighter items and bells for hunts or battle.

His tail waved in a pleased wag at Úlfr’s words, nodding in return. However, as Úlfr gave the first move, Ardyn was abruptly in motion as the last word left the other boy’s mouth, teeth flashing in a brief, playful grin inviting play.
He sought to catch the other boy off guard, but expected that Úlfr was intelligent enough to cotton on. As Ardyn made to close the distance in two swift bounds, he sought to veer slightly to his right, seeking to come to Úlfr’s left side, his own left front paw lifting as his weight shifted smoothly to his other three legs, and seeking to slam the heel of his palm-like paw pad against the other boy’s shoulder and stagger him.
Ardyn sought to lean to his left in the process, head tipping to his own right, teeth toward his own left, jaws parting for a sharp attempted nip at Úlfr’s left side, behind the scapula and above the elbow, seeking to pinch with his front teeth instead of slashing with sabers.
He kept his weight low, limbs slightly bent for mobility and balance. Úlfr was slightly smaller, and being bigger didn’t always mean being safe from smaller opponents. It only took one wrong move to be bested.

Ulfr grinned, excited for the match against such a skilled opponent. He was eager to see how he'd match up. The grin soon was replaced by focused determination as Ardyn got their match off to a fine start. The flaming youth charged and Úlfr prepared. As Ardyn slipped to his left, Úlfr would shift to his right, planting his front legs and swinging his back end behind him as he attempted to intercept Ardyn's left paw with his fangs. Úlfr hoped to grab the limb at the wrist and have a hold he could use in a later maneuver. As he shifted he felt the other boy's fangs nip his side, just behind the elbow but thankfully he was already moving away with his pivot before more serious damage could be done.

Úlfr was quick to maneuver himself. Ardyn caught the flash of teeth out of the corner of his eye and flipped his hand-like paw out of Úlfr’s reach and seeking to attempt at capturing Úlfr’s muzzle across the top in his strong digits and shove downward with his weight – though he was careful to keep his claws sheathed – hoping to drive the pale boy’s chin into the ground.
He sought to pivot on his front end as he went, swinging his hind end to hopefully bring himself and Úlfr face to face – or at least front to front – as his head snaked out and he sought to catch the other boy by the ear in his teeth and tug playfully, if sharply.
His other foreleg snapped up, some of his weight transferring to his hind end, tail sweeping out for balance as he sought to wrap his digits around Úlfr's scruff, hoping to get an advantageous grip on the boy’s neck and fur that he might be able to use.

Ulfr's fangs snapped over thin air as the other boys paw slipped out of reach and instead landed on his muzzle. Ulfr saw his opponent pivot and by that time the pirate was already shifting into his next maneuver, he steeled himself, seeming to go with Ardyn's weight at first but in reality he was using it to roll his head to the side as he flipped his jaws up, seeking to catch onto Ardyn's wrist. In rotating his head, and having his ears pinned, the other boys fangs would miss his ear. He felt the weight on his neck and grinned as he realized Ardyn was on 2 legs now. Ulfr kicked off sharply and immediately, seeking to ram himself into Ardyn's stomach and knock the other boy over.
