Moon's Magic

She sat quietly, gazing at the moon. It bathed the world around her in hues of blue – not that unnatural, though she couldn’t recall the blue being quite so vibrant or luminescent, far more silver than the cold light she’d been seeing on snow and grass the last few nights – and, more bafflingly, purple. Hares and other small animals seemed most given to the violet light, and the more she observed of them, the more she realized that it wasn’t just reflective light. They were glowing.

The fireflies, a creature she’d never seen in winter, even here in a slightly warmer clime, just added to her sense of impending… something. A few scuttled along the wall not far away, just beyond the range of her own blue-white glow. They were blue, not yellow.

Her tail, draping over the edge of the wall, swayed slightly. She wasn’t certain what was coming, but the strangely prolonged full moon, the fireflies, the luminescent plants and animals that weren’t luminescent before… it meant something. She could only hope the impact wasn’t another hard blow to the wolves of Boreas and Auster.

What would Erani do? Aurielle breathed in, then let out the breath in a plume of vapor, eyes lifting again to the moon. Had anything strange like this happened in her Ancestress’s time?
