Fancy meeting you again

Kichi watched the moon thoughtfully, trying to determine the time of day. It was harder now but he was fairly certain that on a normal day it would still be a while before the moon showed itself, later in the day but surely not dusk yet. Blue fireflies lit the surrounding area, crystals clung tenaciously to trees. Kichi avoided the crystals, unsure of what they were but not interested in testing his luck to find out. While he didn’t mind so many hours of darkness there was no doubt it wasn’t normal. These crystals that came with the night were the same and if they were safe or not was an unknown he would not risk.
Beside him Torch slept, the little deer curled up against his side. There was likely no braver deer the wolf imagined than Torch. Brave and foolish, it lacked the proper respect of wolves to run on sight with full trust that Kichi would be there to save him. The deer would surely die without him and thus Kichi could never let the only one he still had from his childhood be left defenseless. Torch was his one weakness, and one he would give life and limb to protect.
He hadn’t planned to spend too much time down this direction but there was no doubt this grove was just a place Torch would love. It was overly abundant with food. When Kichi took the deer back north he would be dealing with snow again unless the cold left soon. With the longer nights, the sun wasn’t getting a chance to melt the snow in Boreas. Kichi owed Torch a bit of fun time.
