How had the world changed so drastically?
Both Aurielle and Ardyn had been stricken with the weeping illness. It was bad enough that they wept glowing blue … stuff not just from the eyes but from the ears, nose… and he didn’t pry much further to know if it was coming from anywhere else. But it was affecting their minds as well. There was paranoia, a strange fear of the dark from one wolf who glowed as bright or brighter than the moon all the time and another that was his own personal campfire if he moved or breathed.
Taliesyn was down, too, and Tel, and Drachen. Aurielle, in a moment of lucidity, had rested the pack’s care upon Cairo’s shoulders until she and her son were well again or… until they died.
His tired steps halted with a shuddering jolt and his teeth clenched. While Red should be the next in line, and it should go to the man. But if he didn’t want to hold that place? Would it go to Cairo? He didn’t want it. Not like that… He liked being Sentinel. It was enough for him.
But… should Valhalla need it, he would take up the crown and lead. Not for himself, but for the pack he loved so much.
Chrystal drifted to perch nearby, carefully settling on a place devoid of either mushrooms or crystals and clicked her beak. Cairo drew in a breath and asked, “Any better?”
”They are stable. No better, no worse, for now. Lyr’s molted so badly from stress though that he looks like a plucked prairie hen, poor bird…”
The Adravendi let the breath out in a sigh, nodding before he leapt to the wall and sat, gazing out at the changed plainsland with a frown. He missed smiling, laughter and jokes, but he really couldn’t find anything funny these days.
