Kali had taken a nice, long rest after her spars, utilising Abigor to knead her sore muscles to try and loosen them up. She drank cool water from her water bladder and munched on dried meats, restoring her energy. Then, with a light groan, she rose to her dainty paws and stretched, a yawn gaping her jaws. She looked around, her bi-colored gaze scanning the landscape in search of a reasonable end-point for her next foray: a race. She wasn’t sure if she’d ever seen a race take place on the bloody battlefield plains, but she supposed there was a first time for everything. The girl once again tilted her head back, this time calling for a companion to join her in a race.

"Kali Klein"

A race? Kione’s overly large ears flicked in the direction of the call.  Wolves had races huh?  Kione turned from the direction he’d been jogging.  Kione’s was roaming one end of ardent to another searching for his own kind.  He’d certainly burned a good amount of energy this day already but no harm in testing a wolf to a race.  Kione was fast, it was a fact not just a boast so perhaps being tired wouldn’t stop him from winning.  

Showing up the painted dog with its crazy orange white and black marking, large ears, and short coat showed up to consider the wolf.  He’d guess she was still young, and only a hair’s breadth larger than him.  “Hello luv,” the dog greeted with a slight accent. “Names Kione.  Looking for a little sprint or will this be a long run?”  Tired or not Kione was up for whatever the wolf was challenging, sounded like a fun time.

"Speech"

Kali was surprised to see that the one responding to her call was the dog from their earlier spars. He must have been hanging around like her, waiting for others to show up to train with. It didn’t really matter, if he could spar he could run, and if he could run she could at least break a little sweat. “Mmm, in between. See that huge, weird metal thing (a tank) in the distance there? First one there wins,” she responded. It was probably about half a mile away, which was certainly in between a sprint and long distance and just the perfect length to really get the muscles moving.

They moved into position, Kali crouching in a way that had her hindquarters bunched up behind her, ready to take off at a moment’s notice. When he’d gotten into position, she looked ahead, “We go on 3,” she instructed. “1….2….3!” she called before bursting forward, her long legs working to build up speed as she attempted to get an early lead.

"Kali Klein"

Kione nodded to her instructions as he looked to the tank farther off. It would be a nice little sprint then. Kione’s tail swung like a circular fan as he let the excitement build up. To Kione this wasn’t about training as much as it was about having a bit of fun sport. His mouth opened in a broad grin as she got into position and started counting.

At the call of three Kione’s haunches pushed against the ground and the wild dog made a sound oddly more like a bird chirping than a dog or wolf barking. Sheer joy and pleasure as he ran, body lowering to the ground, bright eyes looking to the tank ahead. Mom and dad had once said that they’d beat a wolf in a race but it was a thing said but never tested. Time to find out how he faired against one wolf at least!

"Speech"

The sound that came from the dog’s mouth, admittedly, startled her. She fought to keep herself from skittering to the side and her bi-colored gaze cast a bewildered glance at him from her peripherals. She had no idea a canine could make that sort of sound, but then again, she’d never seen a canine quite like the one she was racing. Her attention went forward once more as the pair got closer and closer to the strange metal contraction, taking in a big breath before she gave herself another push, her strides eating away at the ground as she plowed headlong toward their destination, determined to be first. She was, perhaps, a bit too competitive.

What was it with wolves and taking what should be a game and turning it into work?  Kione enjoyed the competition so it was certainly worth a good workout but the necessity wasn’t in him.    Not to say that he wasn’t running hard but the look of enjoyment never left his features.  What would he gain if he won? Bragging rights.  Maybe someday he’d have a family to brag about it with.  Imagine telling others that he had found wolves were slower than wild dogs?  He’d need to race a few to find out.  Race more to see if they were all so uptight in it as well.

As he neared the finish line Kione put more attention on how his find pressed against the ground as he kicked off.   Neck outstretched the painted dog aimed to win this race.
