There was a time that Gilgamesh believed he knew himself. Fearless, bullish, and egotistical, he knew he had flaws. Grand flaws, one might say. Did he disagree? No. He was supposed to be the villain in this story. Too aggressive and sure of himself, he had been outcasted early in his life due to his inability to respect authority. How was he supposed to listen to anyone when he knew he was better than anyone else? Size, intelligence, and experience only got one so far if they were not destined to be great.

He was supposed to be the one destined to be great.

Or so he thought until the ooze dragged the world around him into a nasty plague. Investigating the faint glowing blue fireflies had been harmless at first. Snapping at them playfully. Picking at a few crystals here and there. Even so much as licking one of those oddly colored mushrooms. It hadn't taken long for him to succumb to the sickness. One day, he had been traveling with Modesty, that sweet and easy-to-love girl, and the next, he was running away to bash his skull against trees. Pain filled his being as ooze leaked from his orifices and swelled around his brain. Paranoia and nausea were his new best friend as he wandered in a daze around the island.

No matter where he went, no matter what he did, nothing helped it.

Gilgamesh prayed to the gods above for solace. He prayed for them to even take his life at one point. Wouldn't that have been a grand thing? To let death envelope his body until he could no longer suffocate through the ooze. The mottled man had prayed so hard and it never came. Until one day he was with his friend, or one he thought had been his friend, and a mysterious cloaked figure had arrived. In an instant, his body felt weightless and he truly believed his wish had come true. He was a ghost. Or so he thought. Underneath all the sickness, he was still very much alive, but now he felt he was ghostly in nature and wandered around the land as if he could not be seen by anyone else.

The weird stares he received were lost to him as he moved about in a haze.

Approaching the cavern with its gloomy shadows and swirling pools, he took to peering inside. Midnight was almost upon him as the light began to filter in and bring about a dazzling show. Truly, this place should have all of his answers. Right? Picking his way carefully along slippery rocks, he paused by a crystal and mushroomed lined pool to look at his reflection. Tan cheeks and a scarred pink nose shimmered on the surface as a matching pair of yellow eyes stared back at him. Was this really him? How could he still appear so real when he was dead? Shocked, Gilgamesh looked up and around the dripping cavern. Everything here was still real, but he wasn't.

He was dead, wasn't he?

Looking back down to the pool, he reached a paw over the growing mushrooms to touch a paw to the chilly water. The ripples barely distorted his reflection, but he was still here. A quiet gasp left his lips as he took a step back. Had this place taken him back into time to when he was alive? Picking up his paw, once more, he touched his ankle to his furry chest and pressed upon his skin. No, he had felt that. Lifting a back paw now as he set the front one done, he scratched at his underbelly. He felt that, as well. Looking around wildly, he eyed the crystals and mushrooms suspiciously. If he were a ghost, how did he feel that? His ears fell back on his head as his tail lifted over his haunches and the hair along his scruff raised in fury.

He was alive. Truly, really, actually alive.

Suddenly, his chin twisted to the cavern's ceiling where a lonely and heart-crumpling howl echoed out into the shadows. Tears began to well at his eyes as he kicked out at the mushrooms. Pain reverberated up his leg as his skin scraped against a crystal. These stupid, stupid things were just there to torture him. To taunt him and remind him how idiotic he really had been. Why couldn't he be left alone to feel his sorrow? Why couldn't he have really died? It would have been easier to solve all of his problems if he had been able to waste away into nothing.

Would he be able to cure himself if he could only escape the things that brought the sickness?

Moving his gaze around the cavern, he wondered if sinking into the pool of water would help. Surely, the mushrooms and crystals couldn't grow beneath the surface. As far as he knew, the fish hadn't been affected. Though, he wasn't a big fan of fish anyway so he hadn't thought to check. Quickly, before he could get his wits about him, Gilgamesh slid his body into the pool and let his eyes close as they sank below the surface. Air bubbles lifted up around his nostrils until his lungs couldn't hold it in any longer. Rising back up, he sucked in a sputtering breath and blinked away freezing water from his eyes. Ooze still curled around his lips and the crystals glared brightly at him from the edge.

Time's cavern was alit with dazzling light as midnight hung low outside the entrance.

Everything was bright around him as the cavern shifted from dark to light. "Fuck," he muttered under his breath as he dragged himself back out. Getting into the pool may have been a bad idea, but at least he realized he wasn't a ghost anymore. Kicking one more time at the mushrooms and crystals, he sneered as pores shifted into a cloud around him. Was there really anything to keep this bull shit at bay?
