Sedna measured her steps so the smaller bodies that trailed behind her could keep up. A wall of bamboo stretched up to one side, and the open expanse of grass that trailed out to the runestones on the other. She stopped intermittently, lowering her nose to sniff at the grass and dragged the scent glands in her paws in places where the pack scent was growing faint.
A rabbit’s scent trailed across the border in one place and she paused, beckoning the small pup that looked so much like her new appearance forward. “Hey Rhuem, what do yer think happened ‘ere?” She would give the child a few moments to figure it out, to sort through the scents before they moved on again. Detecting and maintaining borders was an important part of being a wolf after all.

Mum was having her travel far today. Farther than anywhere they'd been allowed to go before. Attempting to keep up with her much larger counterpart, Rheum tried her best to keep her gangly legs untangled. Careful not to trip, she noticed as the bamboo began to feel far away. Glancing back once in a while, she wondered where mama was taking her today. Focusing back on the trail they walked along, she noticed that mama was dragging her paws and sniffing occasionally. Was she supposed to do the same too? Dragging her paws was difficult so she sniffed at the grass. There was definitely something different here. The smells of her siblings and the others she'd met weren't as obvious anymore. Then she scented a - what was it again? - a rabbit! Her ears perked up as she looked at Sedna. Stopping beside her, she stuck her nose to the ground and took a few steps to sort out what was going on. The pack scent definitely was lighter here, and it smelled stronger of animals that weren't like them. "Is thi' the edge of our home?" She asked in her squeaky voice. "I smell a rabbit too goin' out tha' way," Rheum had indeed picked up on some of Sedna's vocal differences as she nudged her nose in the direction of the rabbit's trail. |
Still, they got closer to the border, and that was cool. Would this be the day that ma said they could cross the boarder? That would be even cooler. An adventure. A real adventure. There was the smell of something nearby, something that sorta smelled like lunch. Ma had asked Rheum about it, and now that they were paused Tato could pull himself into a low crouch and look intently at his sister. He was hopefully obscured just enough by a stray shadow, and she wasn't paying that much attention anyway... or at least, that's what Potato thought. He'd stay, crouching and watching and waiting, half listening to ma's lesson.
