Hidden in the trees

Kichi was at the base of the mountain, where a batch of trees was tucked up close, sheltered from the wind by the mighty rock formation. Kichi made his way slowly through the trees and paused on spotting signs of deer. Slowly he moved up so he could see them. Several does graze in the area, half-grown fawns playing naively about the trees. Could there even be a better setup than this?
Admittedly, hunting with another wolf would help. Kichi rarely ended up with another wolf though and thus often enough ended up with smaller prey to go after. The fawns were young enough that he imagined that should be doable.
What about the adults though? He could leave and see if Al had time to go hunting with him. Saracyn would probably be up for killing something as another potential option. There were actually a couple of wolves Kichi wouldn’t mind hunting with. Still, if he left the deer now they may or may not be there when he returned.

Tove had left pack lands in search of food since the festival Kotori wishes to put on will require more food than the pack currently has. The mountain stands against the blue sky like a jagged cut and calls the older wolf to it. As she approaches, the scent of deer catches her attention and the woman points her paws in their direction.
Luckily there is another wolf eyeing the herd as the scarred wolf approaches and she moves to join him. The gray pelted male seems to be young and healthy which is always a good sign in a hunting partner. Stopping close to him, Tove looks to the male, arching an brow in silent question to his plan.
Tove is heavily scarred on her face, neck, and shoulders. Please note that none of her art depicts them but they are there.

Kichi looks surprised as a strange wolf walks up near him but after a moment easily determines the cause of her interest was the deer. He regarded her for a moment but it seemed she was also waiting for his thoughts. The silent type it seemed, well, Kichi liked silence anyway. It looked like they could go for an adult than at least so long as this wolf knew how to hunt. There was no sign of hesitation at least.
Kichi nodded to the adult closest to the edge. “I’ll keep the herd busy. Get that one.” Kichi wasn’t much for talk either and with that he ran towards the herd. The idea of terrifying a bunch of deer seemed fun anyway. Soon he’d learned if he was giving the flashy colored wolf too much trust. Well, there was always more prey if she botched it.

The gray male seems surprised as she walks up to him, silently studying her for a moment. Tove doesn’t mind, if he didn’t give her the once over she would be suspicious. Then he nods to an adult near the edge of the herd and lays out the plan. Simple, straight to point and Tove immediately respects him. A small dip of her head is her only answer before they are off and running.
The wolves move together, the gray male breaking off to take care of the herd while the scarred wolf runs to intercept their prize. An alarm is sounded within the herd and heads shoot up, swiveling around as they quickly move to flee. Tove intercepts their prize, snarling and forcing it to turn in the other direction to flee. Together, the deer and wolf race away, getting further away from the herd with each step.

The plan is laid out and Kichi runs towards the herd, snapping his teeth, lunging forward without actually biting any of them. It wasn’t that kichi didn’t want to hurt them but only a need to keep all of them fearful of him and thus ready to quickly divert from one to the other, his eyes watching as many at once as he could. When one deer tried to run in the wrong direction Kichi intercepted. Soon enough the deer had enough and ran away from Kichi and the deer that had been cut away. The fear was thick and Tove had gotten far enough away.
Kichi left the herd behind and ran to catch up with Tove. Stretching his legs as long and fast as his body could go to catch up with the pair. Once in range, Kichi would snap at a back leg, missing the first time, the second attempt getting a bit of leg but having to let go as the deer kicks out. One more attempt and Kichi gets a solid grip, crunching down on the leg and while the leg didn’t break when it was let go the deer clearly stumbled heavily, giving Tove a good chance to finish it off.

It is easy to separate their target from the rest of the herd and Tove breaks off to follow while Kichi stays to deter any would-be followers. Legs stretch as the deer tries to outpace the older, scarred wolf but quickly finds that she is just as spry as a predator half her age. It snorts in fear as she races along behind it, snarling and snapping at back legs to keep it going. Kichi reappears and Tove changes positions, moving up alongside the prey to get a good angle on the neck.
It takes the gray male three attempts but he makes the deer stumble and that is all the older wolf needs as she launches up toward the sweet spot near the hollow of the neck. Tove’s teeth sink into the soft flesh and it grunts as she does not release her hold, instead using her body weight to drag the deer to the ground. Once it is sprawled on in the dirt, she tightens her grip on the neck and tosses her head back, ripping open all the vital things in its neck. It kicks out, its body fighting death as long as it is able to.
Finally, it stills and Tove turns her duel-toned eyes to Kichi, offering him a grin of thanks.
