I Should've Been Home

As he lapped at the cool spring water, it brought a refreshing chill to the pit of his chest. It washed away the last bit of the desert he carried with him lodged in the back of his throat- and for that, he was grateful.
When he got his fill, he withdrew his attention from the creek allowing his pale blue gaze to settle on the scattered antelope herd in the distance. This is where he found peace. He simply couldn't avoid it any longer. The wilderness called too loudly, and his soul listened too intently. As time wore his better judgment away, his weakened resolve answered. In the first light of this morning's dawn, he was in the wind. Even if he were just gone a couple of days, he had to get out on his own again. While his family meant the world to him, it seemed that it had grown difficult for him to think in the confines of the territory walls. Beyond the plains and the surrounding deserts, he met his clarity.
Shaking away the momentary listlessness, Coran stepped out into the shallow brook in order to cross to the other side. He hadn't given it much thought as to how much further east he would go before turning around. He supposed he would continue until his guilt guided him home. But for now, he was curious as to what could be found on the other side of the rolling grassland.
