Deathbelle was slowly getting used to being cared for by Iolaire. The scars were obvious, and for that she was apologetic, but those feelings only perpetuated the cycle. Iolaire was gentle and patient with her as she regained confidence in herself and the rest of the world. She knew in her sad broken heart that Iolaire only wanted the best for her. Trusting her was easier than anyone else.

Life seemed to return to her after the short time that Iolaire returned to her. Subtly at first, but everyday the light seemed to grow brighter. She was far from the woman that she had once been, but she was no longer lingering at rock bottom. The aging and broken woman was safe, she didn’t have to worry about trying to catch her next meal, and she had someone to love and care for her. There wasn’t much more Deathbelle could ask for when it came to trying to recover from what she had been put through.

Being alone was somewhat rare now, she’d been like this for so long it was counterintuitive to be on her own now. However, the silence and solitude helped her to work through her thoughts. To prove that even if she took a walk alone, Iolaire would still be there when she returned. That was what she was out doing now, taking a little walk in the grove. Trying to get what muscle tone she could get back as she was reinvigorated from the ground up.

The Ooze ParticipantHalloween 2020 - Haunted House

Guilt and shame were everyday emotions for the once proud man. Guilt that he had made his women and children homeless. Guilt that he had dissolved Fenmyre, thus making The Hallows less safe in the process. Shame at having been weak enough that he’d been forced to abandon all and leave. All of it… perhaps it was the universe's way of bringing the giant man down a peg. Reminding him that he was indeed mortal. Funny to think that, when he was a child, Chimera believed himself to be a god.

Amends needed to be made and so the black and white brute was on his way to The Hallows to speak with Artorias. Sure, he could have just hidden away in Ashen and never come out to acknowledge his failings ever again, but that wasn’t the kind of man that Chimera was. Despite his less than savory views on the world, the wolf had a sort of code. It didn’t feel right to just let things lay as they were. He needed to speak to his friend face to face.

On his way to the castle, Chimera took his time. Though he was no longer suffering from the illness that had struck him low, he still had some recovering to do. His strength wasn’t at full par and he was thin, so his gait was leisurely. He stopped often to rest and had decided to do so in the grove that he’d passed through so many times. Shock struck the man as a familiar scent hit dappled nares. Long legs led him through the trees until his pale, pink eye landed upon the vision of a ghost. He hadn’t seen his mother since her displacement years ago. He hadn’t even known that she was still alive.

Chimera wasn’t entirely sure how he felt about the woman these days. She hadn’t been a good mother at all. He’d hated her for quite some time in his youth. That hatred wasn’t there anymore. Deathbelle was a stranger to him. What could he even say to her other than her name? “Deathbelle,” the brute greeted her, simply because they were forced to acknowledge one another’s presence.

Her journey was no easy one. Her fall from grace had been long and hard, a result of mostly her own actions. Accepting and moving past that fact was perhaps her greatest challenge. There was nothing to be done about the past, it was unchangeable. Her current state of being and the future were all the hints of control that Deathbelle had and even that was fickle. She didn’t feel like she had much if any control over her life for a long time. Relearning how to live wasn’t an easy lesson.

Climbing back from the depths was the difficult path, allowing herself to fall into the void was the easy choice. But seeing Iolaire’s face again, feeling her love, affection, and passion, reinvigorated Deathbelle like no one else would have been able to. Io had saved her, so she wouldn’t let that effort go to waste. Belle was determined to recover, at the very least for the woman that she loved, if not for herself.

When she heard her name all of the guilt and shame returned. Deathbelle was no fool, she knew her place in life was the result of her own decisions. There were so many paths she would have taken differently. She froze for a moment, gritting her teeth. Her second litter was possibly her biggest mistake and regret. What if she hadn’t invited Hannibal to her bed? Would she have ruled with Iolaire by her side for years more? Would Venom have challenged her anyway? There was no real way to tell, but Deathbelle hated herself for how that year of her life transpired and the victims that were made from it.

She forced her once vibrant violet gaze up to him. Years and years had passed since she had looked upon her son. She felt like for a moment that her heart had stopped. That it was actually Hannibal that stood before her. Deathbelle knew better than that though. ”Chimera…” She didn’t even know what to say. For a beat after his name she was silent, there were so many unspoken apologies. So much groveling she needed to do. ”What an incredible man you’ve become.” Mismatched ears fell to her skull, fully prepared for him to reject her and keep on moving to the business he had in the Hallows.

The Ooze ParticipantHalloween 2020 - Haunted House

For a moment, the petulant child that Chimera had once been rose within him, rearing up and growling within his mind. It would be so easy for him to just walk on by the woman and pretend that she didn’t exist. She had left him and Siren to their own devices and hadn’t been much of a mother at all. The pair of them had essentially grown up feral with no one to guide or shape them. Everything that Chimera was today was because of his own grit. That being said… without Deathbelle, he wouldn’t have come into being at all. Without her, there would have been no Siren and thus no Albion and Scylla. He wouldn’t have been alive to build his empire or his family. So, in the end Chimera supposed that he owed her something.

The brutes pale pink eye rested on the defeated form of his mother. As she spoke his name, the woman’s ears tucked against her skull. Chimera wondered what was going through her head. It was no secret that she’d been ousted from Ashen by her own daughter. He’d seen neither hide nor hair of the woman since he was a child. For all he knew, she was dead. That thought hadn’t bothered him. There was too much to worry about. Too many others to care for. Dwelling on the past was a waste of time. In his mother’s simple reaction though, it seemed as though this was exactly what she was doing.

Now, Chimera could hold a grudge. It was rare that a wolf gave him reason to do so, however. He could definitely hold a grudge against the woman standing before him, but she had been wronged just as he and Siren had. Hannibal had left them all and that had broken her. It had shattered their family. If he ever saw Hannibal again, he would kill him. Deathbelle though… it looked as though she’d done enough damage to herself in the years that she’d been alone.

Deathbelle complimented him and the giant man’s mismatched ears swiveled forward to catch those words. All that he had ever wanted as a child was her love and attention. He had wanted her to recognize how strong and smart and superior he was to other wolves. Her approval wasn’t necessary anymore, but it was nice to hear. Maybe it was the women in his life that had softened him, but Chimera didn’t have it in him to rebuff this broken fae that had given birth to him.

Stepping forward, Chimera wrapped one foreleg around his mother and drew her in close to his chest. “You’re forgiven,” was all that he said aloud. He continued to hold her though for as long as she needed, though if she tried to pull away, he would hold her more tightly, not quite ready to let her go himself. If she cared, there was so much to tell her. She had so many grandchildren. His queens had heard of her, but had never met her. If Deathbelle wanted, there was a whole life ahead of her.

The words that fell from her lips were far less than her son deserved, but at this point she also had no right to even call him that. At the point in her life when she should have been putting all of her efforts into raising her children, she had been far too weak and fell apart. Hannibal’s abandonment had torn her into pieces, and she was unable to pull herself together for the young children that she had been raising. As a result they had practically raised themselves, and she had lost the privilege of calling them her own.

She fully expected a little sneer and for Chimera to turn away from her. That was what she truly deserved from him, after she had allowed their family to so fully be broken. Just like herself. Part of her dark broken heart hoped that wasn’t the way this meeting would turn out. When he first started to step forward her uncertainty brought a blossom of fear into her chest. He had every reason to take whatever penance he felt was deserving of her. Deathbelle projected her own feelings on his actions and squeezed her eyes shut, ready for whatever blow would be dealt. She couldn’t have predicted that he would wrap her up into a tight embrace.

Deathbelle was stiff for a moment, but as those words that she didn’t deserve fell from his lips she relaxed into his arms. A heavy yet relieved sigh fell from her lips as she hesitantly hugged him back. Half in disbelief that she was allowed to show affection to the boy.. No the man that she had wronged so deeply. She had been a terrible mother to all of her youngest children. ”I don’t deserve forgiveness.” Deathbelle protested despite how he held her.

Deathbelle’s insistence that she didn’t deserve forgiveness brought a soft scoff from the giant, dual-toned man. “I don’t need your permission to give it,” he informed her. “Besides, he left all of us.” She would know the wolf that he referred to. It was no secret that one wolf alone had wronged the Klein family. The children had been a mess just as their mother had but in the end, they all survived.

Chimera would hold onto Belle for as long as the woman wished, the stiffness in his big frame lessening as his mother relaxed into him. “Siren is well,” he spoke again. “You’re a grandmother eleven times over.” Chi wondered what she would think about that. Deathbelle was old now, so grandchildren weren’t unexpected. Still, eleven from one child. Would she be happy or appalled?

“Where have you been?” He asked abruptly, looking down on the woman before him. “You never tried to find us.” She looked pretty horrible, so wherever she’d been, she hadn’t been living in luxury. He wasn’t exactly looking his best either and still had a bit of weight to put back on, but the speckled fae lacked her former luster. Her eyes and coat were dull, she looked thin. It was obvious that she had suffered. That was her penance, he supposed. Her appearance and disposition made it easy to forgive her.

Chimera easily rejected her self-deprecating words, he would decide if he was going to forgive her or not and the weak, broken woman appreciated his certainty. Even more did his words give her comfort as he let the blame rest on Hannibal. Perhaps his disappearance had not been the most devastating of her life, but his actions had begun the cascade of her downfall. She squeezed her eyes shut again as she just tried to relax into Chimera’s arms. No matter the time and events between them, she was still his mother. They had all suffered and their greatest hope was that the future could be different.

She leaned into him as he continued to speak to her softly, telling her about Siren and not so unexpectedly telling her about the many grandchildren he provided for her. Deathbelle herself had eleven total children, but she could only hope and pray that he had been able to take care of his family better than she had. He was already proving himself stronger than his own father. ”Congratulations, Poppa.” She chuckled quietly, hearing the pride in his voice about the children he was raising.

He wasn’t done with her though. There were questions that had gone unanswered. ”For a long time I was in Habari. I helped Recluse to raise her pack after I knew Venom was stable within Ashen.” She had been ousted from her place, but she hadn’t ever really put up a fight against the strength of her daughter. ”A lot happened…” She glazed over her time with Magnus, and tried to forget her time with Sirius. ”Habari was challenged for and I started wandering. Hoping that maybe the elements would take me.” She admitted to him with a whisper. Deathbelle wasn’t trying to hide her past from him, but there were parts she wanted so badly to forget.
