Enki

Ever since the sky turned an ominous red, Tazzy couldn’t help but worry. What was happening? Was there a massive fire somewhere, so large and hot that the sky was reflecting the colors back? He couldn’t see nor smell smoke, so the guess was mute… but what was it then?
Frankly, he was afraid to go to this new place, full of weird spires with carvings that nearly touched the sky… but he needed, no wanted to be brave. It was hard, but he swallowed the lump in his throat and followed close to Enki, pressed into his side the closer and closer they got. Once the spires came into view, he looked up to his boyfriend, unable to hide the worry in his eyes and written across his face.
The spires themselves didn’t look threatening, but they hadn’t been here before. He could only assume that it was the quakes that forced them out of their underground hiding, but why? What purpose did they have? “I don’t know what to think,” he said with a frown as he looked up to his much larger boyfriend. Maybe he had an idea?

Quakes had awoken the couple the night before, and a loud, rumbling groan had filled the hot air of the night. It had rattled Enki’s teeth, shaken his bones, and made uneasiness course like hot embers throughout his body. As dawn broke, splashing the sky with a bloody red in the distance, the tall man knew that he had to go investigate what was happening.
Tazzy, his wonderful boyfriend, had insisted on accompanying him and, while he is grateful for his bright presence, he worries for the smaller man. The sky grows brighter, the red a deeper shade of crimson the closer they draw to the sight of strange new spires; it felt as if someone or something had clawed through the fabric that lays between this world and the unknown and left the heavens bleeding.
As their steps draw closer, Enki feels the smaller body of his boyfriend pressing in toward him and he smiles to himself while protectively curling his body in toward Tazzy. The wind moans at them, as if lost souls linger deep inside the strange spires and beg all those who by to release them. They jut from the ground at odd angles, piercing through the crust of the once clear land and making Enki feel as if he is walking into the jaws of a waiting predator.
Hackles slowly raise with unease but Tazzy’s worried voice has him smoothing down the fur as he looks apologetically at the smaller man. A slender shoulder lifts in a half shrug as he says, “It almost seems like the quakes shook these spires loose from the earth but…” his voice trails off as his bright blue eyes slide out to the nearest stone structure and he purses his lips before adding, “something just feels off. I mean….”
At this, he lifts a paw, vaguely waving it at the holes that seem to litter the stone edifices and saying, “It just doesn’t seem natural.” How long would it take for such a thing to be made? Besides, some of those holes seem to be too clean to have been made by the sheer force of rocks rubbing against each other. Maybe his mind is playing tricks on him but the pale pink man feels like something is just wrong; like they are looking at some crazy puzzle but not all of the pieces have been revealed yet.
Enki takes a step toward the closest of the spires, eyes tracing over the surface as he moves to take a closer look at the new structure.
